November 8, 2017 | In both Brazil and the United States today, democratic governance is under stress. Dr. Francisco Weffort highlighted the crisis of Brazil's democracy as grounded in societal trends and changes in political institutions, modes of competition, the changing role of the media, and the emergence of authoritarian styles. Dr. Abraham Lowenthal suggested that very similar challenges are emerging in the United States and will suggest the usefulness of collaboration between Brazilian and U.S. scholars in analyzing this convergence, discussing its implications and contemplating the future of democracy in the two countries, and how to improve its prospects.
