In a small town in upstate New York a strange creature shocked residents during the 1980s. Three generations of the Hallenbeck family witnessed a bigfoot like creature in the area around their home.
In 1981 they shared their story on PM Magazine, a syndicated TV show. Through archival clips, and a recent interview with one of the witnesses these shocking bigfoot encounters are retold.
Is it possible that bigfoot roams the woods of New York's Hudson Valley?

"Salt of the earth people" is just a polite way of not calling anybody a hick, and anyone who lives in an area that has less traffic lights than teeth in their mouth is a hick.

My friend and I were camping in western Schoharie county around 1995 or so. We heard very similar things one day. Later that night in pitch blackness in thick woods something walked around our camp about 60 yds away pounding on trees with a club. It did this for an hour with our fire burning. A thunder storm moved in and we spent the rest of the night with guns loaded unable to sleep in the pouring rain and lightning. It was terrifying. we were 5 miles from a main road or house.

We've had 3 face to face encounters in Connecticut where I grew up. Two of them were in our kitchen window scaring the daylights out of my sister. My Father 82nd Airborne Paratrooper set a trap for it if it returned, which it did. When it came back, again my sister screamed, my Dad ran outside and sprayed it with the hose which he kept turned on right near the kitchen door. He was about 10 feet away and it lunged at him then went back into the protected Watershed property of about 2,000 acres. I remember him yelling at it while he sprayed it with a "hey, hey!" Trying to scare it away. When he came back inside, he said whatever that was it was big and definitely not pranksters. The third encounter was one coming into our campfire light. Our friend started screaming and shaking so bad that we had to escort him home. He kept saying he saw a monster. My Dad ended up buying a rifle and a box of ammo and kept it by the kitchen door for that Summer. Interesting, this wasn't in some far flung mountainous region or deep wilderness area but in Connecticut, a State with a fairly well developed manufacturing and industrial base but is still considered 60%woodlands even in 2024.

@@ErikKSwanson Hello & thanks. This was in the part of Connecticut referred to as the Naugatuck River Valley. The area was a 2,000+ acre protected Water Shed property which was taken over by the State of Connecticut DEP (DEEP) and absorbed into the Naugatuck State Forest. It has numerous reservoirs, streams & swamps and has 2-3 farms not far away at all. So it's still a good habitat for a wide range of wildlife. I am quite certain that these things have long migrated northward into Litchfield County and also parts of nearby NY State. There's a good deal of woods in the Sharon & Goshen CT area and also Pawling & Paterson NY. (That's actually where I saw my first bear in the wild crossing NY Rte. 22 near the Appalachian Trail.)

Thank you Erik. I’m Bruce’s cousin, Chari, and I was absolutely terrified when I heard the creature’s strange noises that night. My baby daughter was in my arms sleeping and I yelled to my grandmother and mother to get into the house and I locked all the doors of the car. I was actually in the passenger seat. My brother was 15 or 16 yrs old at the time and my mother took me home quickly and drove him back with his shotgun which he fired in the air as my grandmother saw in the moonlight that the huge hairy creature was on 2 legs. They both said it screamed and ran down into the woods. They were brave and had quietly walked to one side of the concrete block building it was standing behind. Many residents of Valatie and Kinderhook had experiences with the creatures. My brother was the one who saw the 2 large creatures and a smaller one while checking his traps. A very wealthy couple who lived by Kinderhook Creek saw the 3 creatures one night per their son who was told with his siblings to stay away from the creek, but to keep quiet about the sighting for fear the residents of Kinderhook would say they were crazy. My uncle who lived by my grandparents saw them in his garden one night.

Ever notice that in 99% of cases, they never enter the house. They might bang on the outside, look in the windows and what not, but they never enter. Even though they might be strong enough to tear down a wall.
Various other paranormal creatures can’t cross the threshold of a home either. What up with that?
Remember the encounter with the “werewolf” pack in Palmyra, Maine? They terrorized those people all night, ran up on the roof and all kind of stuff, but never once broke in a window or forced their way in. Why? What stopped them?

In the 1970s, my family used to visit my uncle who lived way up in the Adirondack mountains near the border of Canada. Talk about isolation? You could barely get TV reception up there. Short story: because there were so many of us in the house, I was to sleep on a couch that was within an enclosed front porch. It had an electric heater put in there because it was surrounded by windows. It must’ve been around 3AM when I woke up feeling like I was being watched. Over my shoulder and through the bamboo blinds I could see some kind of figure moving around the window. It was huge. I was terrified and didn’t move, pretending to continue sleeping. The next morning, we discovered giant humanlike footprints in the snow that went around the house. My uncle said it was just “a bear.” But we knew he was hiding something. Bears do not have toes.

I was so scared my body went rigid like a board! I could hardly breath from the shock. If I wasn't in my 30's I would have died right there because I was getting pains in my chest. I think and wonder if that's why they left after about 15 loooong minutes. I kept telling them... in my mind ( if they could hear me?) That I was going to die. Im too scared. Thats what i kept thinking. I couldn't move my lips cus I was so scared. I'm scared now just reflecting back. Hi, I hate to dissapoint you but Sasquatch doesn't just show up anywhere. If he is there he has been there time and time again over time. He (she) does not travel alone. They live in family groups. I know these things from my own experiences with these creatures. My encounters began when I was 8 year old, and I've had many encounters up to this present day. Also you need to be aware that females and their very young go in groups away from the big males and the older young ones, I know this for a fact. So whatever you do out in the outdoors (even in your very back yard), be careful, arm yourself with a high power gun and don't go alone. There is no proof but if a Sasquatch will kill and eat a deer it would be even easier for them to kill you as well. And don't forget food is food to them.

Not a surprise for Bigfoots to be around this area, with the various brooks connected to the Hudson River. Just a few years earlier to the north there was the famous Whitehall Bigfoot seen by police officers. The fact is they have acclimated to raiding houses in rural areas looking for easy garbage and small livestock and fruit and vegetable meals. And at night looking in windows or slapping houses and making all sorts of crazy loud screams, I do believe is entertainment for them. It has happened to me, both in Michigan and here in the countryside of Darke County, OH.

I dont know if something similar happens in The US. In India since time immemorial there were demi gods for every land when it was not so urbanised and every land owner worshipped them generation after generation. These demigods had the power to shape shift to an animal as well. But some could forest guardians born as big foot. It is said that every country has multiple positive energy centers which are guarded by big foot. I havent heard about any big foot killing humans unless really attacked upon. They live in a seperate world which is hidden and dont wants humans to know their where abouts. Hence, i think one cannot find where they live or hide etc.

They were produced by select local TV stations all around the country back in the late 1970s/early '80s. They mostly used regional stories but did share some stories nationally as well. I watched the version produced by a station in Columbia, SC. I had almost forgotten about the program.

1986 i had an encourer in Maine as a hairy large creature crossing the street. I stopped quickly it slapped my hood dented it & kept going. My bestie was in the car with me & she actually peed herself. We were silent on The way home. 2 years ago my mom ( who would definitely argue with the devil himself) confessed that he saw one standin on the edge of if the road . She stopped in the middle of the road with flashers on. It turned toward her looked & turned around g disappeared back into the woods. She was scarerd for sure. She didn't tell anyone because of controversy. To this day we (myself , my bestie & mother) have not spoke of if either sightings till now. Just memories. I'm from the U.K and last October (2023) I was staying with friends who live a few miles north of Kinderhook in Castleton-On-Hudson. One evening we were driving back to Castleton from Kinderhook after eating at a local restaurant. My friend was driving extra cautiously because she said deer can unexpectedly jump into the road from out of the tree-line or the tall crops on either side of the road. As we drove along, the road took a sharp left turn which we went around at roughly 15mph (quite slow) there were dense trees on the left of the road and a field of tall crops to the right. As we were going around this left turn, we both clearly heard a low guttural animal-like growl. The car windows were up and the stereo was on- but this growl was loud and low enough to be clearly heard by both of us in the car. We both looked at each other and said 'what was that?' I instantly joked 'Was that a Bigfoot?' and she replied 'Yeah, probably.' We both laughed and continued on to Castleton and said no more about it.
Ever since that night, it's always stuck in my head that there was something 'not right' about whatever that encounter was. I've always had an interest in Cryptids/Paranormal and was stunned when I stumbled on this video and Kinderhook was mentioned.

A long time ago, back in 1976 when I was a young man of 17. My cousin Jake and I went hunting out on our Grandfather's 700+ acre ranch in East Texas. On this ranch there was about 200+ acres of thick woods that backed up to a national forest. It was a cool fall day in mid November, we decided we'd try our luck at deer hunting as our family freezer was getting a little low on venison. We liked to use a nice wooded ridge on the Southern side of the woods that overlooked a nice grassy clearing towards the North. This meant we'd be downwind of any possible deer grazing on this grassy area, as on this day, there was a calm breeze from the North. We sat with our backs against a couple of huge beautiful old growth oak trees. Grandpa respected the old growth trees on his property and taught us to respect them as well. We never harvested lumber or firewood from them unless they fell over in a storm or from disease. Anyway, there we were sitting under these old trees just quietly scanning the woods, waiting for a good sized buck to walk into this clearing. What happened next, I still can't believe to this day. If it wasn't for the confirmation from my cousin Jake, I would have shrugged it off as a hallucination or a bad dream. It started with the woods going completely quiet. I mean death quiet. No birds, no insects, no wind noise, nothing. It's as if someone or something hit the pause button. Jake looked over at me and whispered _"Do you hear that?"_ *"Hear what?"* I asked. _"Exactly! Nothin'! I don't hear nothin'!"_ he replied. Just then a loud crack erupted from the national forest side of the woods and Jake's eyes grew as big as saucers. It sounded like someone slammed the side of a tree with a Louisville Slugger. We both knew this was getting serious and in a hurry. Jake had his Dad's new 30-06 and I had Grandpa's old Winchester lever action 30-30. We raised our rifles and set our sights in the direction we believed the loud crack came from. I could hear my heart beating in my eardrums. The suspense was excruciating. I just wanted to get out of there, but Jake wanted to know what in the hell made that noise. To this day I wish we would've just got the hell out of there. After about 30 seconds that felt like an hour, we heard footsteps. Not hoofbeats but footsteps. Like a man running. You know, the seesaw pit pat bipedal rhythm of a human running. But this wasn't a man. It sounded like a damn bulldozer tearing through those woods. There was a smell in the air. I couldn't quite place it. Kind of like rotten meat mixed with sulphur. Closer and closer the sound got, louder and louder. It's as if this thing is about to pop out of the woods and into the clearing. My heart was in my throat, my mouth was dry and my hands were a sweaty, shaking mess. My brain is trying to rationalize what this damn thing is, but nothing fits. I'm frozen with fear. Just then the running stopped. My mind is screaming "RUN, you fool!" but my legs are like spaghetti, and I wasn't going to leave my cousin there by himself to face this abomination. No. Hell no! I'd rather die fighting, than do that. Ol' Jake was like a brother to me. I look over at Jake and he's got his right index finger up to his lips making the "shhh" sign. Then he points into the woods towards the North. *"I see it! I see it Jake!."* I whispered. Well, I guess this damned thing heard me, because it let out a earsplitting roar. Not a scream or a yell, but a damn roar. It sounded like a mix of a lion and an elephant. As it roared, the black mass we saw at the edge of the clearing, started to grow. The damned thing was standing up! Five feet, six feet, seven feet, eight feet, all the way up to what looked to be nine feet tall. It was at that point we knew exactly what it was. It was a damn... - Well, sounds like my wife is calling me for dinner. I'll finish my story later on.

Around this same time period (1980) in the Catskill mountains near the Pepacton reservoir, I had a couple of strange experiences. First, my friend and I were fishing one morning where the east branch of the Delaware river enters the reservoir. The water level was low and there were wide mud flats along the stream. We came across a line of what looked like very large human footprints following along the stream headed east toward Margaretville. We measured the prints to be 17 inches in length. They were clear as day and went for about a quarter mile before veering off into the woods. A few months later in the same area, another friend and I heard deep, loud howls coming from the hillside across the valley from where we were at. Maybe 3 or 4 howls separated by 30 seconds each. I've never forgotten those incidents. I'm an avid trail runner and always in the woods, but have never heard or seen anything else.

Back in the late 80s early 90s i was camped out by myself along the Delaware river in Calicoon / Long Eddy area. Something very heavy and walking on two feet walked upto and around my tent. It was so heavy it shook the ground beneath me. The one thought that crossed my mind was do not show your head by looking outside for it. If whatever it was wanted to hurt me it was going to have to take a chance of getting shot. I racked a fresh round into my 8mm k98 and it walked away. The next morning I woke up to a half a foot of snow. No tracks.. had other odd things happen on two other hunts but nothing compared to this..

1970s: Humans learn that Bigfoot could be real, and humans are mostly terrified, except most of the Indigenous Tribes...
1980s: Less interest, but more of the same. We mostly only hear the stories which sell. The soon to be hit movie "Harry and the Hendersons" is released and another side of the story is told...
1990s: Renewed interest and humans become more brave and/or stupid with their Sasquatch encounters. However, there is a noticeable increase in encounters...
2000s: Sightings increase, with more professionals such as Wildlife Biologists and Cops getting in on the searches. Television show "Finding Bigfoot" debuts in 2008 and interest grows again, this time in a more positive direction...
2010s: Though some progress is made, there is a sudden increase in idiots wanting to shoot to kill for evidence...
2020s: We have worked through some issues here and there, but now the Sasquatch and their children are watching our televisions and computers through our picture windows. Humans give them treats weekly, and the Sasquatch watch over the home and property for and with the humans - as all understand that it is shared territory and both parties agree to the peace, love, safety, and general well being of the land...

I saw one in 94 in Warrensburg, NY once, it was at night and I was on my way back from my friends girlfriend's trailer and had to use the bathroom. On my way back to where me, my boyfriend, his brother and my friend we had set up camp with a fire pit going with a case of beer 🍻 and food cooking on a grill, on the way down I could hear twig's and branches breaking and could smell an offensive oder of rotten garbage and what flesh would smell like if it was rotting and skunk all rolled into one well I gagged and turned around and flicked my cigarette lighter to see what was causing the twig's and branches to break and as I did this about 20 feet away from me was this 8 or 9 foot tall reddish brown furry looking being with almost human looking eyes staren at me and I froze in fear 😯😨 and then turned around and ran like I had wings on my feet and got slapped in the face with branches and twig's and got down to the campsite yelling in fear of what I saw and my friend (Tony was his name) said " oh yeah I forgot to tell you that there's bigfoots/ Sasquatch's around here" like it was no big deal 🤷🏼‍♀️ well that night I didn't really get barely any sleep and we packed up the next day and left rented a motel room for the rest of the week.

That drone footage showing the “house”… their roof looks like it is in danger of collapse… place hasn’t been maintained… just proof that hillbillies are pretty much universal to all rural areas of the nation

Let’s see … alone in the middle of nowhere .
No Dogs . No dependable weapons on hand .
Somebody shows up with shitty shotgun shells .
Eventually flames came out of the barrel !
And the big Squatch was scared off .
What a rude way to treat a stranger ….
    😂😂😂😂
