The late 60s and early 70s were the tripping years. 😊

Background to the song. . .John's son Julian, a little boy back then by his first wife, Cynthia, came home from school with a colorful drawing he had done. John asked Julian what the drawing was, and he told his dad "it's Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds". John was so struck by the beauty of the drawing and the phrase he immediately sat down and wrote a song about it. It turns out, Lucy was Julian's school mate, and, apparently she passed away just recently. So, it turns out, there was a real "Lucy" who was the inspiration for "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds."
Definitely a surreal soundscape to be sure. What will be absolutely fascinating will be the Elton John cover of this song, quite mesmerizing in its own right, this time with Elton singing the lead vocals with John Lennon doing the backing vocals and playing guitar.

The lyrics are classic wild John Lennon lyrics with fantastical imagery. Certainly cannot be taken literally.

The Beatles denied it had anything to do with an LSD Trip, yeah right!! They just didn't want to get sued!

Lucy is Julian's classmate, Lucy O'Donnell. She passed away in 2009.

John Lennon was a big fan of Lewis Carrol who wrote Alice In Wonderland. Enough said. Oh yeah, they sped up John's vocal to make it sound childlike.

I absolutely love your Beatles reactions, Phil!🤩
I'm not going to recommend a specific track because you just can't go wrong with anything in their amazing catalog.
    Keep diving, my man! 👍😁

You would often get reverb on Lennon vocals. Another thing done here is his vocals were recorded at a slightly slower tape speed, so that when it's played back at normal speed his vocals are at a slightly higher pitch, making John sound slightly "elf-like". All in service to the supernatural vibe of the song!

It's exactly about what the lyrics are saying. "Picture yourself on a train in a station. Picture yourself on a boat on a river...." Lennon paints a vivid picture for you to imagine. I think the only real metaphor here is the 'newspaper taxis', representing the real-world creeping in.

If you've ever seen Julian's drawing, you'd think it more likely inspired Paul's song Yesterday, originally titled Scrambled Eggs. You can make out what looks like stars.

This song is describing the surreal world while under the influence of the drug LSD. It perfectly describes the surreal images and landscapes that are seen when taking this drug.
Anyone who took LSD back then or in more recent times would highly likely think the same.
Comments from people who say it has nothing to do with taking LSD are almost guaranteed to come from people who have never experienced it.
John Lennon used to take LSD frequently during the period when this was recorded- he has openly admitted that. His statement that it is about a painting his son did at school is probably true - but only in the sense that the painting was the inspiration for writing this- it’s more likely that he was looking at the painting while under the influence of LSD.
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds = L. S. D.

What comments are you talking about? I don't see any comments HERE saying the song has nothing to do with LSD. Take my comment below. "The lyrics are saying picture this, picture that...." Lennon then paints a very colorful picture for you to look at. Saying this, doesn't exclude the fact that the song is very much about an LSD experience. Julian's painting was of Lucy in the sky with stars. Someone in the conversation with Julian had LSD on his mind.

@@lalapo5304 except John was doing a lot of LSD back then and although the song was inspired by Juians picture as suggested, the LSD influence is there for all to to hear. :)

This is about the effects of a 'trip' on L S D. There are many theories about the 'story' behind this but John said himself that it described a 'trip'. Great reaction, if a little 'confused'😂❤

PHIL ...... You should REACT to this short history of the Beatles video. It has some inaccuracies in it, but it's a good start for people who are not that familiar with their story .... ua-cam.com/video/UEmSjDuTxyc/v-deo.html John Lennon was a big fan of the author LEWIS CARROLL who wrote the "ALICE IN WONDERLAND" and "ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS" books. If you have ever READ those books, the lands that Alice goes to in those books, are full of fantastical characters, creatures and land scapes. His love of that really did inspire the 'pictures" he is telling you to imagine. He was NOT on an LSD trip when he wrote it. He has always had a love for these "fantasy" type scapes since he was a kid. I used to make up fantasy worlds and creatures when I was growing up and I DIDN'T NEED LSD or ANY drugs to create them.
