Thank you for your honest review! I’m so excited for these but when I built a custom nine pan on the MUG site it wasn’t cheap! $60!!! I didn’t end up purchasing it. Not sure nine shades are worth that price. Especially when the new ND Love palette is coming out. That looks beautiful! Can’t wait to see your thoughts on that too. Thank you for your positivity and honesty! 😘

I built my own custom nine pan palette and was shocked to see it come out to $60. Then I realized it basically looked like if the Huda beauty Emerald Obsessions and Mauve Obsessions had a baby. I could buy both of those palettes and get 18 eyeshadows for $54. I am so confused by Makeup Geek prices. I mean Makeup Geek is sold at Target, it shouldn't cost more than a highend brand at Sephora.

    • @tracymckinney5911
      @tracymckinney5911 4 роки тому +5

I built a 9 pan palette and when I went to check out it took off price for palette and one or two shadows. It took it down to the 32.99 of the pre made ones. I would go to the pay now and see what final price actually is because I thought that was the price also till I did that.

@@tracymckinney5911 Honestly even if it was $33 that is still too much in my opinion for a drugstore brand. I don't want to be paying more for drugstore makeup than I do for high end. I mean $33 is more than Huda's and Anastasia's 9 pan palettes, something about that just really irks me.

As you said, indies are killing it with singles. I feel like MUG is relying heavily on their former cult status rather than being players in the current game, let alone being leaders. I could not tell which shades you had used on your intro video. It looked grey, but not the greys in the palette and definitely not blues. I noticed RBK was not getting true to pan colour on her eyes as well. If your skin tone has difficulties then there is no hope in hell for mine. I might be tempted by the foils if they release some vibrant shades. Thanks M!

I feel like if the price was around $4 Mark per shadow alot more people would be satisfied. I do see where MUG was going they want a staple a classic nothing outlandish ... but you also have to create makeup to what the customers want. I love a gimmick I love different packaging and themes so it just isnt for me but it could be for alot of people maybe a more mature audience? Im 28 and this feels to old fashioned for me

If I recall correctly Marlena said that the change in shape “gives room for more product so you’re getting more product” so it’s interesting that it’s actually less. LOL (But like you said maybe new formula is weighted differently) I was considering the MUG neutrals palette even though I have the viseart one and I just made a 35 pan neutrals palette with Sydney Grace singles. I’m going to go ahead and skip this one.

Second, I'm saving my money for the ND face and eye Love palettes! I do have over 40 of the old MUG round singles, but I'm interested to try this new formula, and I definitely want to support Marlena. I totally agree with you about Sydney Grace shadows. You're the one who turned me on to them last summer during the Christmas in July sale, and I've been so happy with them. I also picked up the Enduring Love Palette earlier this month. Hey Beauty! No tearing you apart on my part... Everyone has their own opinions and experience with a product, I value yours. For instance, I don't love my Natasha Denona Gold palette, and people were giving it rave reviews... I do have a lot of previous Makeup Geek eyeshadows and I love them, so I hopped on this rebrand and made 2 9-pan palettes, since getting everything was too much money for me, and the thing that has me sour on the experience is how long shipping is taking! I placed my order on the 18th, they shipped it days later and it will arrive on Thursday the 30th. I'm past excited for this purchase now. :( Anyway, I guess I will bring out my existing MUG palettes to play with them.

Great and honest review-as always. I use to purchase from Makeup Geek back in 2015/2016 and I don't have anything bad to say about the brand or Marlena. I just think that so much has happened within the makeup industry in the past few years that unless a brand is really able to kill it-with formula, color story, packaging, and marketing they are going to get lost in the shuffle. There are so many indie brands that are checking all of the boxes: Sydney Grace, Kalideos, Menagerie, Give Me Glow, not to mention Cliondah and their multi-chromes. Even some of the makeup giants are struggling to keep up and stand out. I hope that Marlena has some innovative releases planned that will help her stand out and stay competitive and attract new customers to her brand.

Once again Mel Thompson brings us an honest review! Thank you so much for never wavering in how you critique a certain product, even if it's criticism, you do it with such tact and professionalism. I am going to pass on this one. After buying some multichromes from Clionadh and now considering buying some singles from Sidney Grace, I feel there are so many other brands that are more innovative or more affordable. Side note, I got a personal message from Clionadh explaining their shipping delays and thanking me for my patience. So classy, makes me want to purchase more from them 😊

So, I have both SG and original MUG mattes in my collection, and I use them for different things. If I need WHAM color payoff right out the gate, I use SG. This is particularly useful for deep, saturated colors to deepen up a look on top of other layers of shadow, or for their unusually smooth and pigmented light shades when I want color without shimmer. When I want to slowly build up layers of gradiating tones, I use original MUG. It will be interesting to try the new formula. Perhaps comparing similar/same named shades from your two collections would make a worthy follow-up video?

Well the 9 pans used to be $50 something and now they are $33 and the quads are $14 so I’d say they are cheaper now and talc free and also everything is more sustainable that’s probably why there’s no mirror. Camille Bowen when calculating the per gram cost-the rebrand is cheaper. Old 9 pan cost $50/9 gives you pan cost then /1.8 = $3.09 per gram. Rebrand ($33/9)/1.5=$2.44 per gram. To truly know which is cheaper you HAVE to do the math.

I was just excited at being able to get some colors that weren’t available anymore. Like I have wanted cupcake, chickadee, and starry eyed forever but I guess that they were discontinued. However, I’m really disappointed that shimma shimma has changed. It was one of my most fave shades. Also I see corrupt is still available, but is a power pigment now therefore costing more than the old one. I saw swatches that showed it was nowhere as good as the old so the formula definitely has changed. It’s nowhere as black so not sure how it’s a power pigment. I wish o had purchased back ups of those two. I guess I’ll have to see if I can replace those two with something from Sydney Grace.

You and LisaJ turned me on to them and I just cannot believe the quality and how easily they are to blend. Just stunning! Also purchased the Sonia G. Pro eye shadow set and that has been a game changer for me as well! Love your tutorials and have deep respect for your honesty and opinions on product reviews.

Mel - could I just ask you a question. Not entirely in regards to makeup but kinda sorta: what kind of lens do you use for your eye makeup application or what type of setup change do you need to achieve this? You have probably one of the best close up demos out there, and you seem sensible, how do you it?!?! It’s perfection!

Thank you being honest with your review. At first I didn’t quite understand what you meant about the blue shadow but looking closely at the difference between the 2nd look in the 5th look I understood what you meant about the issues with that specific shadow. Kudos to your expertise in finding a way to make it work. Although you had to go about it backwards in application, it forces me to think of other eyeshadows I thought didn’t perform well but it could be it just takes stepping-out-of-the-usual to make them work. I always enjoy your videos.

Thanks for all the hard work as usual! But I already own so many MG shadows - including the original Shimma Shimma, which I will not be exchanging for a more matte one, thank you very much. I think a lot of the shade names are great, but I'm not compelled to get anymore MG singles looking at this "rebrand". I'm happy with the colors and formula I have now. I don't need to repurchase them in a square pan with a different formula? I guess I was hoping for something... more... when they said they were rebranding. Maybe I'm in the minority? 🤔

I watched Marlenes video the other day explaining the Matrix system. The rows have a purpose that you pick one from each one either straight down or mix the colors. Always use one light, one from row 2, one from row 3 and one from the last row. She said using one from each depth of color will make a beautiful look. I would like to see you do a look using one from each light to dark as intended.
I actually bought a 9 pan with colors I picked out. Her choices are vast. I got four singles from Sydney Grace and they are ok, but I must say the variety is very very limited. Not many to choose from. Make Up Geek has a huge selection. The brown shades alone were over 15 of them!
You might have had a problem with that light blue because it is only the second depth of color and probably not made to “pack” on outer corner.

Sydney grace has a ton of shadows. Some go in and out of stock and are taken off the site. But i own at least 60, not including palettes. But non the less, you can use shadows however you choose. She has a great system but it’s not something you have to stick to.

I have a TON of original MUG single shadows and have loved them so very much, all the formulas have been impressive to me. I like the new square pans and these new ones definitely have my attention and eventually will buy some. I adore her foiled shadows from the past and thankfully still have many because they aren’t all in this rebranded line. I love that these are talc-free and actually like these overall a little better than Viseart, although I am a big Viseart fan as well. Just placed a Sydney Grace order so I will be holding off on the MUG ones for a bit. I like the options for mixing and matching face and eye pans in the magnetic holders as well as the amount of shadows you can curate for your own personal preferences. I’m glad MUG is back in the game 🤩

I do love MG eyeshadows very much! They were one of my first single shadows I bought and I still have them and the completed palettes. I also love Sydney Grace and do agree I like her shadows more because the selection and the metallics are incredible. I find that single shadows are way more expensive to buy than the palettes are because $200+ for the two MG palettes is a lot for me. Thanks for the beautiful looks and your honest opinions. 🥰❤️😘

Just one suggestion, when you don’t do the talk through, it would be helpful to know what brushes that you are using, so we know which work best with a particular shadow. Maybe you can list it like you do the shade, right on the screen? Thanks so much for you being you! ❤️

And, I’m sorry 😖. I usually will put the name of the brushes as well and I know most of the names by heart but I was editing away from my room and didn’t have access to the brushes so there were a few that I couldn’t remember which one was which. I didn’t want to have some brushes listed and others not so I just opted to leave them out. I won’t make that mistake again LOL

I actually did my first SG order on black friday and was blown away (I received my package that monday! It was WILD.) and I love the colors. I definitely think I'll stick with buying SG. But that said, I would love a SG vs MUG comparison of some kind. It's not necessary of course, but I don't want to buy the MUG singles just to do it myself, haha. This was a good video. I do find it weird that despite calling it a rebrand a lot of people seem unclear if there was also a reformulation? Some of the other people who got PR insisted no new formula, others did...

So the current formula has corn starch, I think you have a sensitivity to corn, Mel, if I remember correctly. I appreciate an honest opinion. I was simply loving the all matte palette because of the color layout, I like that kind of order when I see a palette.

Hi Mel! Could the blue be patchy on your first try because you put it on a warm tone shadow? I remember Sam Ravandhal mentioned that the reason why the Subculture didn’t work because of the warm and the cool tones are on the opposite of the colour wheel. Just a thought? Great video!

It seems sort of cheap and lazy to me that the palette is just a free form palette. You think it would more like a MAC or Viseart palette where the shadows have specific spaces for them. I dunno, either way this isn't "new" it's typical of most pro artist brands.

I am surprised by the increase in price especially considering they are in target now and the lack of duo chromes. I really want to support mug they are og them but it’s just so much competition out my purchase would be emotional not quality for price.
