  • The Smothers Brothers talk about their original TV variety show and its late 80s revival, and Tommy demonstrates his Yo-Yo Man skills, in a daytime television interview broadcast 7-17-89. The BetaGems channel also has "2-4-89 Tommy Smothers YoYo Man & Mike Cross," "1989 Smothers Brothers: Paul Rodriguez meets YoYo Man," "1989 Smothers Brothers: Ghosts, Governments & Other Scary Things," "YoYo Man 8-9-89 Tommy Smothers TV comedy sketch," "George Harrison meets the Smothers Brothers 11-17-68," "Smothers Brothers 1988 Stouffer's Pizza commercial," "Gallagher & Tommy Smothers 4-27-88 TV variety show," "Smothers Brothers 4-14-65 Jack Benny Show," "Smothers Brothers on Hollywood Squares 7-6-87," "Smothers Brothers 11-16-88 interview & performance," "Political TV commercial compilation 1985 hosted by Smothers Brothers," "Smothers Brothers 5-25-89 Politics & Poker, Will Durst," and "YoYo Man cartoon Smothers Brothers 8-23-89 TV short."
BetaGems are culled from an archive of over 1000 beta video tapes recorded from the early 1980s into the 1990s. Most feature live music performances broadcast on television in San Diego CA, though there are also rarely seen commercials, comedy clips, and other material that doesn't seem to be anywhere else on UA-cam or online.
Most of the tapes were recorded on a Sony SL-HFT7 Super Beta Theater Hi-Fi Stereo - the same model was refurbished and is being used for these digital transfers and uploads. In rare occasions where a BetaGems clip does appear elsewhere, we're only uploading if our own beta master is better quality or contains material not seen previously. Much footage comes from public television and public access broadcasts that the taper, who worked for a local cable TV production company in the 1980s, monitored nightly for several years. Some of the programming is strictly regional, mostly from the San Diego area.

So glad they did the 1988-89 series. Noticed one of the callers mentioned something that made me guess he was referring that E! had already approached Dickie about airing the original Comedy Hour shows. I am very glad that happened a few years later.

The Smothers Brothers were all about anti-censorship.
All their clips in this Donahue interview are censored out.
    Bummer.
I've loved Tommy since Purple Onion days.
RIP, YoYo Man, and thanx so very much, for the magic, music, and memories.

Sorry, UA-cam bots trimmed out some old show segments over copyrights, usually specific songs - weird irony, robots "censoring" a talk about censorship!

Thanx for posting this! Tom wasn't kidding about losing his sense of humour. It's sad and disturbing to see Tom that way, especially after knowing the whole story.
Look for a Dick Cavett show with a bloated Tom and longhaired Dick. Tom made no bones that he was drinking heavily to cope with the firing. You'd swear he wanted to strangle Cavett, and he's eventually moved off camera. Despite all that, Dick (Smothers) handled the interview (and his brother) very well.
Their reunions happened in my early teens, so Yo-yo Man was iconic for me. I was also happy to have seen them perform live before they retired.
    R.I.P. Tommy Smothers

So funny that you mentioned the interview. That interview is a crazy hour and a half. First the Alias Smith and Jones bit, then Tommy and Dickie, and boy are they shocking. The audience gasped at Dickie's appearance. Tommy is a petulant brat. Dickie has a small chip on his shoulder but handles himself really well almost taking over the interview from Cavett. George Burns comes out and tells dirty jokes. My mother dropped Her Tommy love and fell for Dickie during this interview, the organic food, the goats, the raw milk. She was a fan of Adelle Davis and we had the book. And she worshipped George Burns and Cavett. Dickie and Adelle were interesting and she flat-out insults Tommy.
      It was great TV.
This interview marked the beginning of the BDE. The Big Dickie ERA when Dickie took control. He had to, Tommy was adrift.

@@stephaniedwyer256 Unfortunately I agree that Tommy was a "petulant brat" in that Cavett interview, and not in his usually brilliant goofball comic way. The saddest part was seeing that seriousness in his eyes, and knowing from personal experience exactly how scrambled and hurt his mind really was. Although Dickie also had a chip on his shoulder, his job as straight man made it less noticeable. In fact, he seemed much more pleasant than usual next to that moody version of Tom, but you could tell how hurt Dick was too.
Because of how my own life went, I have a ton of empathy for what happened to them both. I'm glad they each eventually backed off their drinking, got the help they needed, and got to enjoy their lives again.
