Beautiful! I'd never heard this played on anything but a pipe organ before. However, leave it to no less than the great Eastman Wind Ensemble to do it justice!! Thanks for sharing!

It's a Real treat to see That Ensemble at Long-Last... My Mercury lps were all ruined by a Cellar flooding 4 Years ago.. All the Disc's developed mildew and had to be Destroyed.. Ooh that sure Hurt. I treasured each one Highly and handled them, oh so Carefully for almost 40 Years...

What a joy to hear such fine musicianship performing this fine transcription for wind ensemble! There are few sounds I enjoy more than tuté pianissimo and fortissimo. (Triggers very faint memories of the San Diego High School Honor Band circa 1965~66 with UCSB's Professor Faulkner (?) conducting. I was playing oboe.)

Jesus! Only a musician would know. Hard enough to get your one little bit right, on an instrument it wasn't written for, let alone make it match the other nine players in your section. Stunning!

Played well, as I would expect from EWE. Not my favorite arrangement of this piece for wind group, though. I like Gerallt Leslie Williams version. It was recorded back in the 70's (now out of print) by the London Symphonic Band, a pickup group assembled from players from London Symphony, London Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic and BBC orchestras. This version is VERY challenging, but I think it well within EWE's deservedly legendary skills. Unfortunately, it was never published.

Beautifully, cleanly played...typical of Eastman. I took post-graduate conducting there, and discovered just how horrible I was.

Jimsuperkid, by cutting out a part they improved the piece - there were just too many notes.

This is such a great performance! my only critique is that I wish the pause at 8:20 was about 4 beats long to create a different effect

I watched a second time just to see if there was an organ playing background chords to help add to the texture. Tribute to these phenomenal players and especially the arrangement cause it at times really sounded like an organ.

In re conradcoolio: He referenced alleged cuts. All I can say is... HUH??? I know this piece well (as an organ piece), and I don't hear any cuts here. Only two reasons to cut anything. Because of time constraints or because your band lacks the technical ability to play some parts. One, the entire piece isn't that long, so no need on length grounds. Two, Eastman Winds can play anything that has ever been written, so no need on difficulty grounds, either.

  • @alexpwatkins
