  • This year marks the 48th anniversary of the student uprising in Soweto when young people protested against the imposition of Afrikaans by the apartheid regime as a medium of instruction. Freedom Park held its annual event reflecting on the 1976 June 16 events in Pretoria. The remembrance comes amid political changes following the recent general elections.

Next to that memorial site there is another memorial site openly celebrating apartheid and glorifying members of Koevoet and other serial killers. How is that acceptable?
Shows that South Africa has not really reckoned with the past, except for some superficial and cosmetic changes.

Commemorating the student uprising, while continuing to pay pensions to former apartheid police perpetrators. What a joke!
