I turned 13 (an early teenager) in Oct 1968 and this beautiful song by Judy and William will always be part of that change that was happenning in me. I love soul music its so uplifting.
Yes it was. One of my faves from that era. The strings added to the beauty. First semester (1968) at the University of Maryland (College Park, Maryland). I'm returning to the dorm from class and pass this girl who's singing Private Number to herself. Never forgot that. Maybe I'll write a story around it.
@@susanharris431 Well, if we're gonna go with that logic, then personal computers didn't become a commodity until the late eighties and early nineties, so how do you explain this recording finding its way onto UA-cam? Surely they didn't post it back in 1968?
Must have been the Civic Hall. Saw the Four Tops there in September 1992 shortly after release from the Royal Military Police. However, nothing beats Memphis soul
So this is where it all started, 47 years old and still one of the catchiest melodies out there that was sampled by many different artists. The good music never dies, and this is a great example of that.
It sure does feel like an accomplishment to have survived the 90's. That shit was Rough. So this Is like recovering and the Nurses are all singing along to this. Making my bed & tucking me in. Im Wounded. Recuperating. Our father who art in Heaven. Hallowed be thy Name:
This is a great song . I was only 8 years old when it was released. Now I am 54, and found myself singing it in the car when it was not even playing on the radio. I know it's not the most popular soul song . It was not done by one of the soul llegends, but I believe a lot more people appreciate it than realized.
So this is where my search leads me to...the origin of the music that got me hooked from Pretty Lights - Finally Moving, Nightmares on Wax - You Wish and Rappin 4Tay - Playas Club....Can't hate in the least.
hell yes classic duet soul song from the magic william bell and the classy judy clay, now this is soul at the best. so timeless feel like a dance to this now. a stax classic.
July 16th: Happy birthday R&B-Soul Singer-songwriter William Bell. Thank you and God bless. R.I.P. Judy Clay. Thanks for the upload, Jason Elias. Blessings
Pure Rock Solid Gold and sounding as good today as it did the day I first it on the radio back in the day.Needless to say I dashed out to the record shop and bought it.
The intro to this is insane and I see why it was sampled. It is crazy to me though that they didn't make a complete song with it. Instead it sounds like the beginning of a completely different song and then they just swap to a different song.
classic soul track, great duet form the magic william bell and the classy judy clay, just one of these tracks we can all easy dance to.i feel the love with this track.
To the people wondering whether or not this version is the original, look at the record label. The record was produced by the song's main writer along with the song's cowriter on vocals. Hello!
My all time favourite TAMLA MOTOWN record and giving my age away ????? We used to dance away to this music in all the dance halls in GLASGOW,SCOTLAND !!!!!!! HAPPY DAYS
'Judy Clay and William Bell's "Private Number" is sampled by Nightmares on Wax "You Wish" (2006), "Playaz Club" by Rappin' 4-Tay (1994), "Warm Summer Daze" by Vybe (1995), "Let the Funk Ride" by Aim (1995), "Partis De Rien" by Scred Connexion (2000), "Det Löser Sig" by Timbuktu (2005), "Finally Moving" by Pretty Lights (2006), "Levels" by Avivii (2011), and "Levels" by Avicii (Skrillex Remix).' From wikipedia, obviously a great song then
Just learnt to play the opening hook after years of fizzing over the Nightmares on Wax version. The roots of the sample did not disappoint. Thnx for posting.
I was brought here by Pandora, that played me Pretty Lights. I favorited that, then look it up here, was led through several covers and samples, and finally found my way to the original. Glad I made the journey.

William Bell NEVER gets the credit he deserves, he is one of the best!!!!!
He really is
Absolute GOAT
Most sampled riff ever
Bruno Garcia
1. Rapin 4tay
2. Tempo
...who else has sampled it? I'm curious.
Gene Berrocal Metaform, Aim, Pretty Lights, Vybe, Poison Clan and many more..
Bruno Garcia It's such a fantastic riff though.
The first time I heard it was in 2009. It was Rappin 4 Tay.
Gene Berrocal Dizzy Wright - Killem with Kindness
Bruno Garcia scred connexion - Parti de rien ^^
i agree
This was released in 1968 and I have still got the single.Great year for music and a great time to be alive.

A time when soul music had beautiful melody. Memories of the latter half of '68 coming flooding back.
@ Mark Miller
Yeah, a real special era it was.
God , you forget how bloody great this era was for music. These two though....different level completely!
Whoever left the Windows XP sound in at 0:18 is a legend

Paul Sidaway It was at the Cavendish club, back of the Victoria hotel, now called Britannia hotel.
@@speckyk1997 very nice. I was only 6 years old at the time. Must have been an amazing experience
This is still the best version of this emotionally charged piece of musical magic.

Judy clay and William bell what a great number one of my loves of past years that song
Never forgotten this great duet. Only trouble with it is that it's not long enough!
This brilliant soul song brings back great memories of 1968 when I was 14 and at Centre 3 youth club disco. Still sounding great.
