  • 12-17-19 A winter view of Chetek Wisconsin. A balmy 25 degree F. day with light snow makes for an interesting flight. It sounds like we should be getting down to -10 degrees F tonight. A little early for the sub zero temperatures. The saying is true, If you don't like the weather in Wisconsin wait 15 minutes and it will change. Chetek is a cute little town with friendly people. If you like the outdoors this is a good place to go. Do something nice for someone today.

I grew up in Chetek in the '60s. Graduated and left in the '70s. Only made it back to visit a few times after that. I recognize a lot of the buildings, but so much has changed as well. The old school building that was downtown in gone. Yellow Lodge is now condos on the lake. The old Methodist and Presbyterian churches are gone. The Farmer Store gone, the old bank building is something else, as is Bill's Trading post. The A&W root beer stand is replaced by something else. I'm guessing Charlie Abbot's Rexall is something else as well now......Like they say, you can never go home again.

Hey I go to the new high school in Chetek I’m class of 2020. I used to work at the A&W stand that got turned into a drive in called Northlake’s about 20 years ago. Really cool to hear how it’s changed since when you grew up here to now.

@@asherbeach8060 Just out of curiosity - when they they finally turn that bridge by the dam into a two lane bridge? When I was living there the bridge was something out of the 1800s - it was only one lane wide and if you had to cross it you had to slow down and stop to see if anyone was entering the bridge from the opposite side. If they got on first, you had to stop and wait for them to cross and leave enough room for them to exit. Everyone in town seem to know the social rules of crossing that bridge, I don't recall any accidents, but the town sure wasn't in any hurry to replace it.

DoubleDogDare54 I have no clue when they did that. I moved here from the cities about 15 years ago and it’s always been like that. From what I know it’s been a 2 lane bridge for at least 20 or 25 years. That side of town has a lot more development now.

@@asherbeach8060 Well, whenever they did it at least the people who live on the far side of the bridge could drop down to old 53 and drive into town if they needed something. When they replaced the Long Bridge back in the early 70s we were living on the far side, the house being the one where D runs head on into M by the west entrance into Lake View cemetery. The old bridge was blocked off and torn down months before the new bridge was finished, to the point you could drive across it to get to town. What a pain - we had to drive all the way around Moose Ear and Ten Mile to old 53 just to get groceries. I don't know if it is still there but there was a small convenience store just before you got to "The Spot" - now Gilligan's, I guess - and there was someone who used to have a self service veggie stand right at the bottom of that big dip in the road where you could turn to go to Six Lakes. If it weren't for that we would have only made the trek to town once a week - and when the leaves were down we could friggin' see Bill's Trading Post from our back window looking across Prairie Lake :-D. It could have been worse, though. Where the bridge hits land now there was a small resort called "Breezy Bay". It had been there since the '30s at least. They were going to knock down either the resort or all the houses on the other side of the road for the new entrance to the bridge. That would have wiped out our house as well. They opted to knock down the resort. Otherwise we would have had to move.

Thanks for flying over Chetek. I used to spend many, many weekends there around Prairie Lake and Beaver Lake when I was young. It was always a very special time for me to live in and around the Eau Claire area. I wish I had appreciated it then like I do now. Thank you, my friend.

Had my childhood in Mondovi, loved that video. Thanks for taking the time to share these videos. I live in suburbs of Chicago and miss WI.

I love visiting small towns around the area. It is very relaxing and fun to be part of a slower pace of life. Sometimes I sit in a chair and look out the window and watch it snow. Then I usually take a nap.
