Make a Chain Link Table Runner

- Let's make a new table runner! I decided I'm done with winter and ready for spring, so I need a pretty new table runner. If you'd like to join me in making this table runner, you'll need the following fabric:
*28 charm squares (or 28- 5 inch squares of fabric in a variety of colors and patterns)
*1/2 yard of background fabric
*1/2 yard of backing fabric
*just over 1/4 yard of binding fabric (10 inches of yardage)
*some batting--you can piece together batting scraps to get the size you need.
**Cut your charm squares in half, then cut one stack of halves in half again.
From the background cut:
** 18 2.5" squares
**8 5.5" squares, which are then cut in half on the diagonal
**4 strips of fabric that are 2.5" wide and width-of-fabric long.
For your binding, cut 4 strips at 2.5" wide and width-of-fabric long (about 40")
Note: These fabric quantities will make a table runner that is 62" long and 15/5" wide. If you'd like yours to be bigger or smaller, adjust the fabric accordingly.

This video has been in the works for weeks due to some technical difficulties. I'm an old hand at sewing and quilting, but I'm still a novice at making videos. My laptop ran out of storage space in the middle of the editing process so I had to put it on hold till I figured out how to safely clear up space without deleting anything terribly important. I still managed to delete some video footage that I had intended to use and had to re-record a couple of segments. - Навчання та стиль
That's a stitch in the ditch foot. Very nice summery looking runner. It's 23 degrees in MN.
Thank you for that info! It's a handy foot to have! And twenty- three degrees! Brrr! Stay warm!
Good understandable instruction. Thank you😊
Love your "chain link" pattern. Nicely done. Thank you for sharing this table runner with all of us. Blessings to y'all.

Thank you for your great tutorial. I just found your channel and really enjoyed it! I live in WI and we are expecting eleven inches of snow. I am retired and thought I could look in my stash and sew tomorrow. Thanks for sharing! Laurie
Oh my goodness! Eleven inches of snow! I grew up in Indiana, so I know what that's like, but I'm happy snow is a rarity in Texas. This table runner would also look really good in a scrappy version. Happy sewing!
Thank you so very much for this beautiful table runner idea! Your fabric choices were top notch for me! And you did a fine job explaining. Hubby was fine.
Thank you so much! ❤
I like your easy quiet manner in teaching. Great pattern, I am going to try this one.😊
Thank you so much!
Very pretty runner. I have been looking for a new pattern and really like this one. Your instructions are very clear and easy to follow, glad I found your channel. Thanks!

I just came across your channel, Love that runner and Quilting
Thank you so much!!
Lori, I've recently stumbled onto your channel and have enjoyed your style of approach to quilting.
You are very informative and neat in your approach to whatever you are making.
Bernadette Banner and Missouri Star are both favorites of mine as well as Donna of Jordan Fabrics.
Looking forward to more videos.
Good luck on your retirement.
Thank you so much! ❤️
I’m a beginner and love the table runner!
Give it a try! It's really not hard. Thanks for watching!
This will be a great design for Holiday Runners... easy to follow. Thank you for your demo.
Yes! This design would look great in holiday fabric! Thanks for watching!
Just came across your channel and so glad I did. Thank you for sharing and teaching in such an easy to understand way. Blessing and happy sewing!
Thank you so much! 💓
I started quilting last April and am obsessed, I retired 14 years ago, not sure what took me so long to try quilting. I am going to make your table runner, that you for sharing.
That's awesome! I got into quilting back in 2002 when my aunt invited me to a quilting class at a local quilt store. I often tease her by saying she's responsible for my addiction. 🤣 Thanks for watching!
My husband is my enabler, he said he wanted a house filled with quilts. So in less than a year I have made 16 quilts & 10 table runners. He has gotten me every supply I could possibly want 🥰 but I told him no long arm at my age. I quilt on my large hoop embroidery machine and larger projects I send out. I am having too much fun buying fabric and piecing quilt tops.
@Ruth S That is a dreamboat of a husband you have there!! 😍
Great video Lori! It's easy to follow, pretty fabric & thanks for sharing the pattern.
Thank you so much for watching!
My sister sent me a picture of the table runner that she wanted me to make for her. I've looked for months and now I have found you. Thank heavens . ! So now off to hopefully get one as beautiful as yours.
It's beautiful 😍
Thank you! 😊
Love this! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Love this table runner, it's beautiful. Thanks!
Thanks so much!❤
Thank you Love it!❤
You are very creative! Love this pattern & your color choices. I think the foot is called stitch in the ditch foot??? At least that's what it's called for a Brothers machine. Happy Sewing ♥️ 🧵🪡
I think you’re right! Thanks for watching!
just made this, It is tricky, did more ripping than ever-the little squares are easy to put in wrong! Love my seam ripper, came out great!
Yes, it can be tricky! That's why I leave them all laid out as I sew. Using a design board helps. I still managed to turn one the wrong way and didn't notice until I was quilting it! 🤣 Too late! I left it as is!
Excellent directions and tutorial! The table runner is beautiful!
Thank you so much for watching!
Excellent tutorial, and good luck on your Etsy Shop!
Thank you! ☺️

Quilting isn't perfect??? I think it's fabulous! And love the blues and yellows.
Thank you so much! Sometimes we're too hard on ourselves! 🥰
Beautiful job on the table runner. Thanks so much for sharing your expertise.
Thanks for watching! 💓
Beautiful table table runnere and with your instructions it seems pretty easy to make. I became one of your subscribers and I think it's a good thing. Bye and thank you.
That's awesome! Thank you so much! 💓

Thank you! ☺️ You too!
It’s a beautiful Spring chain link table runner. Excellent video.
Thank you! ☺️
Your table runner is so beautiful. Thank you for sharing the directions to make it - I can't wait to get started.
Thanks for watching! 💓
Your fine I can see no problem
More videos please!!! Love this runner❤
Thank you so much! I'm working on getting better equipment, so the technical side of making videos isn't so difficult.
New sub here! What a wonderful tutorial! I am going to make this!!
Thank you so much! ❤️
Just came upon your channel. What a great tutorial. Thanks so much.
Thanks for watching!
love the design and colorways you have used
Thank you so much! 💙
I totally enjoyed your video and eventually make one or two. Thank you.
Yay, thank you!❤
That’s a “stitch in the ditch” presser foot. I use mine often but have never seen it used in this way. An old quilter, I’m always learning. And your explanation of mitering corners that are not right angles was teriffic.
Thank you! And these mitered corners are much better than my first attempt. Practice helps!
Great points 👏👏👏 I use table runners on den consoles too. I like to change them out for seasons and holidays. Great job!
Thanks for watching!
Framed 4-Patch for Little Charmers II by Heather Peterson is similar without the border.
Thank you for this tutorial. I have been looking for this pattern also. what is the measurement of the triangle fabric or how do you determine the measurement to cut the triangle fabric?
I first cut a square of 5.5" fabric and then cut that in half on the diagonal. That gives you a triangle that is very slightly bigger than you need, but I feel like I get a better result if I cut it bigger and trim it down after it's sewn. I hope that helps! Thanks for watching!
Try not to move the camera to fast. Doing that may leave someone a little dizzy. I love the runner.
Thank you! ☺️
Beautiful, is there a reason that the first block white squares go a different direction then the others? Or just a design choice?
It was a complete oversight on my part! We'll call it a design choice, though, since it's done. Lol!
Thank you so much for the video. Can I ask why you are spraying the runner before you quilt it?
I spray it for a couple of reasons. The setting triangles are cut on the bias, so they get a bit wavy with the handling they go through with sewing the rows together. So starching helps prevent pleats when I sew the borders on. Also, it helps keep the fabric really flat during the quilting process, so I don't get any wrinkles or pleats. I feel like it helps me get a slightly more accurate result--but like most things in quilting, it's personal preference.
@@loriar1027 thank you! I am a beginner and trying to learn a lot lol.
I just saw your channel. Where in central Texas are you? I’m in Waco. Love the table runner. Happy quilting. Tfs.
I’m in San Antonio! I love Waco too! Went there a couple of years ago to see Jenny on the Road. Thanks so much for watching! ❤️
اَلسَلامُ عَلَيْكُم وَرَحْمَةُ اَللهِ وَبَرَكاتُهُ🔔👍👏👏👏
Thank you!!
FYI Missouri Star company did a tutorial on this table runner
Really? I looked on their channel and couldn’t find anything. Do you know the name of the pattern or how long ago it was posted?
@@loriar1027 I will go in and find it. If my memory serves me right it was on one of the Triple plays tutorials. I believe it was Natalie who made a table runner. I have been looking at some many during this heat wave. Once sites I have looked at have been Jordans Fabric, Missouri Star Fabric, Fat Quarter Fabric and Teresa Down under. But am sure it is Triple Play Tutorial Missouri Star.
Just wondering why the first part of the chain has the white background squares in a different position than the rest of the runner?
Totally an oversight on my part! 😱
I see the answer further down 😊
62 inches is very long. How many squares would I need for a 40 inch size?
For 40 inches, I think you should need about 19 charm squares.
Berapa ukuran segitiga background nya?
ini adalah potongan persegi 5,5 inci menjadi dua diagonal.
Do you have a pattern for that one please?
I don't exactly have a pattern, but I put the fabric requirements in the description box. If you have any questions about what I wrote there, let me know, and I'll do my best to answer.
The pattern is on etsy
Omg, I didn’t think to look there! 😂
What is the name of the pattern on Etsy? I love this design. I have left over charm squares and want to use them up. I love the video, but it moves quick enough that I can’t confirm the placement of the 1/2 strips and quarter strips as well as the screen timeout. If I could just get a picture of the completed runner that would meet my needs. Just want to refer to it as I put things together.
@Cynthia Henthorn the pattern is called interlocking squares by PerfectlyPascjGifts. Sorry i missed your comment eatlier..
@@pamforsling6869 Thank you so much! I just needed something to look at while I put my pieces together.
That really sounds horrible! I’m just waiting on my house to sell then moving to central Texas. Hate to hear I’m moving from crappy weather in Pa to the same in Tx!
It's actually not bad compared to up north. I grew up in Indiana, and I love the weather here in Texas. We do get one or two weather events each winter that close schools and highways, but they only last a day or two. And as a northerner, you'll laugh at what kind of weather shuts things down here.
I am new at this and you have completely lost me here…..I would need a paper pattern to be able to figure this out.
I'm so sorry! I don't have a pattern. One commenter said that there's one on Etsy. I'm not sure how I would go about making a paper pattern.
