i can see the leaning one being true. For all swords but katanas even more since they bend easily at stay bent unless you bend them back. If its in its sheath then maybe you can but it more depends if the sheath is rigid enough to not bend as well as it also doing nothing to the tsuba guard. Stepping over it is superstition at best probably borne off some story of a guy who stepped over he slipped and died or something
The shorter videos definitely highlight and help curate videos that you might want to watch the full version of, but also you get some of the best parts too even if you don't watch the full video. Long live the Shadlands

My blade is utilitarian, I don't play with murder tools (though it is fully capable of such use), it does not care and I give it the proper attention when I get back home.
It's definitely a good idea to try with shorter videos, I can typically only listen to long ones like if it was a podcast while I'm working, but can't actively watch you doing stuff for 40 minutes, while I can for 5.
This is a phenomenal move on Shad's part. I'll admit I often had a hard time getting down to the 30 or 40 minute videos i really wanted to see because I just didn't have the free time to invest, but these edits are going to vastly improve my viewership and help us both out. Love the work Shad, I really do. Stay alive and keep it coming!
The Shadlands seems like a reasonably nice place to be... I'd set up a house there in the shadows of the castle walls and watch out for them wild machicolations.
My martial arts instructor always used to tell me that he was so pedantic about doing a technique a certain way even if you can make it work another way was to control the formation of habits. You might be able to get away with doing X 75% of the time, but if you constantly do it; it'll become muscle memory, and you'll end up doing it subconsciously in the 25% of the time where it could cause problems. Being pedantic also gives opportunities to bring up other topics to expose newer and less experienced people to various potential issues so that they have the full information for when the time comes for them to make their own decision.
I'd assume it would stem from general mannerisms and respect for the smith that made them, As the last thing someone would want to do is explain to their local smith why the users negligence would put the weapon in such a state so soon, which in turn would tarnish the smiths name by insinuating the smiths work is fallible.
It can scratch and cause rust, but proper maintenance will keep the rust away. This has a very similar feeling as to like when people say don't flip the cylinder of a revolver in like you see in the movies. I say if that breaks the firearm then it's not a very good firearm.
Realistically after the muder by youtube video, every single active shadiversity subscriber should aslo subscribe to this channel, whether you think its as good as shadiversity or not, if for no other reason than simply to assist Shad here. Its a free action that takes 3 seconds or less and helps show the algoritm that we dont like how its treating him! and just for moral support if nothing else!
I hope things work out for you and your channel Shad. I love the content you produce and I'd hate to see it go away. If it offers any consolation I do get recommended your videos in my feed.

I would have to disagree Shad, sticking it into the ground is likley to blunt it more than useing a tatami mat (in my opinion) while topsoil does contain a lot of organic matter(usually 10-20%) and soil pores (which makes it soft/ spongy) even fine soils contain a lot of silt particles which tend to be quartz or feldspars, which are much harder than steel, its like sticking the blade into sandpaper (albeit ultra fine sand paper). soil feels soft and spongy but it is a suspension of very hard particles (all the softer particles tend to weather away leaving the quartZ and feldspars)
@@davis.fourohfour There is a reason sand is used for sandpaper. Quartz, the main content of most sand is at 9 on the mohs scale, only lower than diamond. The sand will definetely noticibly scratch the steel, although it can quickly be "fixed" through polishing the sword

I purchased a rather gently used sword from someone some time ago (they spent high carbon money and then hung it on a wall.) A nice 2-hander, but they had stuck it in the ground for photo ops some years ago, wiped it off, and there was a layer of corrosion on the business end of the blade. I cleaned it thoroughly. It has a patina at that end, but it is otherwise perfectly fine. Long live the Shadlands!
Have you ever done a video on how to clean a sword? I feel like a lot of people would jump at the chance to learn some basic maintenance techniques you do. Heck, you mentioned there are different ways people prefer to use. Do the other guys do things differently? Just throwing some ideas out there for you. I know it’s getting really rough right now and as someone who REALLY enjoyed Shadow of the Conqueror (currently on my second read of the book and have reread the graphic novel multiple times) I only wish I could do more!
I feel the short form worked well as a refresh. I have watched most of the Shadiversity videos so I'm excited to have them roll through again in almost a refresher format compared to the originals.
Some of us can be a bit homebound. Watching you lot gambol about the verge can make us feel like we're getting out and about during the hard times. What Shad brings to the sword UA-camverse is a bit of FUN. Joy in the flinging about the steel. It's not complicated and it's fun to see someone walk instead of standing there talking for a half hour.
I hope the Shadlands can fulfill it's purpose and dream someday. Until then, carry on Shad. This content seems to be being recommended at least, so here's to success of the channel! I've never understood the stabbing a sword into the ground being bad, besides like you said with rocks damaging the tip, but boy I didn't think about oils from your skin being a problem! Yet it's a proper technique to do so sometimes... turns out like you said you just have to care for it and clean it after!
But i pushed the end of my umbrella into the ground and it broke at it hit a stone! Also when i am chopping wood and need to put the axe down i hit it into the chopping block so its easy to grab and safe........ that winds people up so much.

As a bushcrafter I apply the following conditions: 1. is the blade mine 2. is it a wall hanger or a working tool 3. has someone just spent three hours polishing and sharpening it. "Never touch the blade because you will ruin it" always makes me chuckle. Sure, I dont want greasy mitts fingering my boxed, collectable, German officers messer, because I will have to clean it. But if oily finger dabs could so easily destroy solid steel knives and swords, they wouldnt be much use for anything. Similarly, I have working knives that are used for splitting wood, digging cat holes, and chopping branches. Not sure anyone can do anything to it worse than it sees already. I think a lot of pedantry originates from people that 1. dont use the item, and 2. Dont know how to sharpen and maintain it. If you ever get chatting with a knife or sword guy, lead the conversation to the subject of sharpeners, oils and stropping. You will soon figure out if they are a collector, or actually use their blades as tools.
Another issue, I think, are people mixing up the *ideal* use with the actual, practical use of these items. Ideally, yes, you'd never touch a blade or stick it in the ground or smack a tree with it or any number of such things. In a practical sense, however, that's just not realistic and people are bound to do those things when you're actually using the item. Similarly, in a historical sense, people mix up the ideal with what actually happened. Again, sure, ideally you wouldn't lean on blades and stick them in the ground, but did soldiers and mercenaries do it? Yes, probably quite frequently either through ignorance of the damage it could do or just not caring because they'll have to clean it later anyway. Just find a small arms repairman in the modern army and listen to the stories of all the dumb things soldiers do to their weapons today. Compared to the stories you'll hear about the heinous things done to M4's and M16's, sticking a sword in the ground or touching its blade aren't so bad.

I think a lot of pedantry originates from people that 1. dont use the item, and 2. Dont know how to sharpen and maintain it.
If you ever get chatting with a knife or sword guy, lead the conversation to the subject of sharpeners, oils and stropping.
You will soon figure out if they are a collector, or actually use their blades as tools.
Another issue, I think, are people mixing up the *ideal* use with the actual, practical use of these items. Ideally, yes, you'd never touch a blade or stick it in the ground or smack a tree with it or any number of such things. In a practical sense, however, that's just not realistic and people are bound to do those things when you're actually using the item.
Similarly, in a historical sense, people mix up the ideal with what actually happened. Again, sure, ideally you wouldn't lean on blades and stick them in the ground, but did soldiers and mercenaries do it? Yes, probably quite frequently either through ignorance of the damage it could do or just not caring because they'll have to clean it later anyway. Just find a small arms repairman in the modern army and listen to the stories of all the dumb things soldiers do to their weapons today. Compared to the stories you'll hear about the heinous things done to M4's and M16's, sticking a sword in the ground or touching its blade aren't so bad.

Imagine spending the whole day in a medieval battle, smashing your sword against shields, armour and people ..... then when you are exhausted some pedant coming over and saying "oh you dont want to stick that in the mud mate, you might ruin it!"
