Akshar to Axar is still so much acceptable. My name was and is butchered so much even by Indians. On one occasion when I paid my fees in my college, the receipt showed my name as Bharat Watch… imagine if this was on any of my official documents.

In Gujarat state they usually pronounce Akshar as Axar. Can't blame the principal here.

Sportpersons in India do this more often because they generally used to lower down their age to play age group cricket. So when he went to get a passport, the school would have given a new certificate instead forging old documents that are needed for passport.
In Gujarati Language we have four "S" i.e S, Sh, X, ksh.. So Axar name is as per the Gujarati language.
You pronounce it that way...but it is written as sh
Lakshmi -> Laxmi is however very common and the standard spelling nowadays.
Axar in Gujurati is phonetically sounded as
"Aksar"..hence it matches eirh "Akshar"
What’s VVS Laxman’s excuse
Same letter in Indian alphabets is pronounced as 'ksha', 'khya', 'xa' and even as 'kha'(Bengali).
It's VVS Laxman and no one bats as eyelid. Why is it peculiar for Axar? I have never pondered upon this question!

English orthography is bad at depicting Indian words anyway. It's an absolute mess over here. I wish the British made a standard transliteration system for Indian languages while they were here.
You didn't need the British to do that. Indians could have done it by themselves.
Please go to Gujarat. Ask anyone to pronounce Akshar, you'll know. Heights of intelligence is asking a foreigner and then agreeing to it.
