If I battled my son and he spammed sand-attack, hyper potions, and poison-stall strats I would disown him.
You know that you can't use items during fights against real people, right ? So he wouldn't use Hyper Potions. And the sand attack strategy wouldn't work because he would need 6 turns of not attacking where you would have a chance of taking down his Pokemon despite sand attacks. Plus, you could take a Pokemon like Skarmory with the Keen eye ability in order to prevent the accuracy loss. Also Skarmory is a Steel type so poison doesn't work on it.

When you run low on money, you can take some of the Pokemon you'll never use from the PC, then stomp the lower leveled trainers you skipped.

There is also an unlimited, but very slow source of moneys: he can use pokemon with thief, steal items from wild pokemon and sell them. For example, Gulpin at route 110 can hold a big pearl with 5% chance, which can be sold for 3750$

I still think a pickup team would help out a lot. I know these were streamed so I'm watching the past right now, but like I said last video, you could definitely grind route 1 for some healing items and pokeballs with low level Ziggys to save on cash. I think you can catch them at higher levels later on too, so there is a possibility for nuggets and candy to sell.
EDIT: Apparently another comment pointed out that Ant said in stream Pickup only works when fighting trainers. I'm pretty sure that's wrong, but maybe that's something built into the rom hack. I'm not 100% positive either way.

Sure, he loses one pokemon from level downs but he'll probably make more than enough back to catch several.

Ehh, I guess he could just grind the Slateport Battle Tent for items to sell, since it is rental teams only. It gives you a Full Heal for 3 consecutive wins, which you can sell for 300P.
Fallarbor Battle Tent gives you Hyper Potion but is much harder since it uses the Battle Arena format.
Verdanturf Battle Tent gives you Nest Ball, which sells for 500P, but uses the Battle Palace format. You can technically just catch 3 mons that are good for the format, throw them in, and speed up footage while spamming A.
This challenge actually looks really fun - you have to rely on all kinds of different pokemon and status moves to win, and you are on a limited budged too.
5 electrodes and a lvl 2 with an exp share could be the strat though. Like, they won't lose exp, and the lvl 2 will remove half of the exp they would have lost even if they don't for some reason. Electro-cide for the win!

@ If all you're doing is exploding, it's better to just have your strongest in the last slot in case the opponent doesn't lose before that.
@ Electrode doesn't learn any other electric move than Spark and Rollout is at level 34. Selfdestruct is at level 27. Sounds all good, right? No, it is awful.
The highest level you can catch them at is 26 if you disregard the Team Aqua Hideout, where you can catch two at level 30. Voltorb isn't possible either, same issue.

Did you know the move cut can be used on tall grass and it clears a significant chunk around you? I remember sweet scent from oddish can instantly call wild pokemon as well.

I strongly recommend that you stock up on some cheap items like soda pop and lava cookie. That way you don't have to waste alot of money on healing items and you'll have enough money to buy more (poke)balls to capture stronger pokemon.
Isn't buying Soda Pop a huge pain in the ass though? Or could you buy many in one go in this one?

I have a suggestion for the next challenge:
Beat any game with x2 exp gain, but when your Pokemon evolves you throw it(Pokemon with no evolutions are banned)
You can just ditch the evolution by pressing b(or some other button I haven't played pokemon in a while)

Smallant once you reach the middle stages of the game, you should be able to catch high-enough-level wild pokemon to sweep through the early trainers quickly with just 1 or 2 and become RICH!!! By my estimation, this is basically the "backtracking challenge".
It would be cool to see how this challenge could work with the other generations, especially the evolving down mechanic and probably how well stone evos could work.

For money farming, you can go catch a party full of Zigzagoon and just cycle around in order to earn infinite money without weakening your team and thus costing money. Slow as hell and probably not worth the time, but eventually it might be necessary.

I think the main reason why it wasn't raining on the route just before Fortree City is that it's one of those effects that run on the game's battery. And since this is a rom and it can't have a battery, the overworld weather won't change. It's the same as if the game had a day and night circle, that won't work if the battery is dead either. So glad this didn't carry onto the DS, 3DS and Switch games.

I honestly don't know how the pokemon league will be doable unless you can find some way to make money. Five back to back battles where you get worse and all you have access to are wild pokemon? This is honestly going to be a test of how truly busted are legendaries
I guess he'll have to catch a pickup team sooner or later and grind route 1 with throwaway pokemon. Not necessarily an easy way to make money, but his pickup pokemon don't even have to battle to pickup.

I think a Shedinja would be great for this challenge run with Wonder Guard. With Toxic, Protect, Confuse Ray, Sand Attack or Double Team is would be a good last resort.

The strong pokemon still loses half of the exp and the hm slave needs to either survive a hit or outspeed if it doesn't sleep

I just had an idea for the perfect strategy for this: fear! The good old Focus sash Endeavor quick Attack Rattata. It's supposed to be level 1 anyways, so the leveling down won't be an issue. Just have a full team of them and you win.

@@amparolopez6236 I doubt that finding Rattata would be hard, and by single use do you mean that back in emerald focus sashes disappear after the first battle they're used in? Because if so, that's a very dumb mechanic.
@@Eragonnogare They always worked that way, (unless it's an online battle) and you cannot catch a Rattata in base Emerald without Trading. Thus your strategy has flaws.

Then abandons them inside a box once they are not useful to him. This is most likely due to how much he's already put them through. Where scars and injuries are starting to appear and take a toll on their performance

What would be busted in this challenge is if Rare Candies still work and can raise levels, so you can catch a high level Nincada, use Rare Candies on it and get a Shedinja, then give it Toxic, Sand Attack and Protect, it'd be able to cheese most things no problem! It DOES take 13 Rare Candies though but that's not an issue if you farm them with a full team of Pickup Pokemon while catching new team members.
It's almost like this is how Pokemon was always designed to be played. Let's face it pokemon has a lot of design elements that are cool for worldbuilding but useless in gameplay compared to the optimal strategy of 1-2 overleveled pokemon and lots of healing items.
Reverse leveling:
-Gives you a reason to catch and use dozens of different pokemon.
-Battles need to be strategic to avoid a wipe.
-Items must be used sparingly and strategically to avoid going broke.
Pokemon's target audience is 8 year olds, the game will always be user friendly and easy

I really want a reason to get into pokemon and catch em all but as an adult both the story and gameplay aren't really appealing to me. And I'm not interested in competitive.
Eh, I personally prefer 0 EXP gain + no item use in battle + species clause. Negative EXP is interesting, but it looks to be a bit too grindy for my tastes.

There aren’t many options to choose from, but how would spamming a Mon with Destiny Bond go? You purposely go down to take out your opponent when you can’t regularly battle them, and you don’t level down.
That only works if his Pokémon outspeeds or is able to take a hit, so that it can use Destiny Bond in the first place. Def possible, but certainly not enough to cheese through the challenge. Im also not sure if there are any wild pokémon that have this move available without leveling up
@@chari9291 you can catch Wobbuffet in the Safari Zone, and they learn it at Level 1. They also have a base HP of 190 - if there's any Pokemon that could take a hit at a low level, Wobbuffet would be it.
@@bane2201 Ohhh i see, yeah that could work! Its still not an OP strategy bc he has to win the battle without destiny bond or else it counts as loss when your pokemon faints in the same round. And Sydney at the Elite 4 could def one shot lower level Wobbuffet, but your idea could def make parts of the challenge easier
@@chari9291 yeah, you can catch Wobbuffet at level 27, and that's definitely not gonna be much help in the Elite 4. I think there are some berries that can increase Speed EVs, maybe he could grow those to help, or use a Quick Claw. Alternatively he could use a stat buffing setup and Helping Hand into the Wobbuffet. But that assumes he could find a Pokemon that could survive against the Elite 4 long enough to buff Speed for 5-6 turns and then switch out.
It'd be great if the Focus Sash was in Emerald (prevents being OHKO'd). Unfortunately it was introduced in Gen 4.
@@bane2201 Im not sure if Wobbuffett's base speed is enough to be able to outspeed even with full EVs tbh (and Ant usually never bothers with EV training anyway) and quick claw is very unreliable. Even if Focus Sash was in gen 3, he would only get 1, so it would only work once in battle. And im not sure if there is a pokemon with batton pass around (that also learns the right stat buffing moves) to be able to carry the stat changes if he switches wobbuffet in after buffing up. And even if, it seems like too much of an effort to go through all that trouble just to get one wobbuffet to use destiny bond (and switching out would mean the other pokemon loses levels as it didnt faint and gains exp, so it will also be less bulky and may not be able to set the next wobbuffet up)
