I have received so much judgment and criticism over the years from parents who say it's "mean" and "scary" and "homeschool should be magical." I commend you for preparing your child for the real world and to be proactive in her own life.
Thank you -- we live in an area that is super friendly to homeschoolers. But if anyone was negative about it, I don't think I would bother worrying about them. People can be afraid of and mean about things they don't understand. It's human. Annoying, but human!
My husband is a corporate strategist. I would love for him to evaluate these and maybe do some with our children. Thank you for such a great suggestion. I have never heard of these.
It's so weird for me to be talking about PBLs like they are new... I just never knew this is what 90% of my career had been. They are just dynamic, real-world projects that require everyone to bring their expertise to the table and I.D. or acquire resources to get the project done. People who can do this well are highly sought after, and I'd be interested to know how much this is taught in college. I'm already thinking about making my own, but the ones I discuss on this video will keep us going for a while. I can't wait to get to some of them. Also, I have no idea why these are touted as units for gifted kids. It just seems like a logical way to learn something to me. We shall certainly see.
I have never heard of these either. These sound sound very cool and challenging. We may have to add one in for my fifth grader for this upcominf school year. Thanks for sharing!

I love this. It's basically logic based. So important for our little ones to learn to approach and try and solve problems. Thank you for sharing! 🙏☺️💗💕
It is logic with a twist and an addition. The twist is that the project can change on the kid pretty fast with "kickers" and the addition is that they actually have to do something -- active research, contact a real-life scientist or expert with questions. They have to mentally work through a problem but also physically do something about it. Thanks for your comment 😊

Hi there :) I've watched many of your videos now so I just wanted to share some cool similarities. I homeschool my only child who will be in 5th grade this upcoming year! After her kindergarten year, I was planning on homeschooling to teach her Spanish (I'm nowhere near fluent). But then the Spanish immersion school I had been trying to get her in finally had openings (2020) and I sent her there for 2 years. After 2nd grade, I knew the best thing for us would be to homeschool. I tried a few things with her that just weren't working with long breaks in between because she was starting to hate Spanish and I kept feeling scared to try again (I'm a massive overthinker). But it seems like we finally figured out what's working for us. We're also doing secular homeschool!
There are so many of us out there but we are all dispersed! There have been a couple homeschool moms who are very similar, many homeschooling only one child. What have found useful with Spanish? Did you find a program or a curriculum that works for you?

OMGosh, I laughed out loud when I read this. My husband calls this my going to town look. Except, I recently culled through my wardrobe and can confirm I do not own a pair of pants that don't have soil stains and paint splashes on them. I keep meaning to buy the game Cat Crimes and keep forgetting!

Thanks for sharing! I just recently got a book out from the library about this but did not know there was a curriculum. This will save me so much time not having to create my own!
Yes, and I thought the cost of these was pretty low for what you get. When you look at the student books, it's pretty sparse. But s you read through the problem, you realise they have a way to go on their own to fill in those blank spots... a lot of research and discussion and reading, going to the library, reaching out to experts. And it's been my own personal experience that when a homeschool kid reaches out to an adult and asks for help or has a question, they are very intrigued and more than happy to lend a hand. If you had a shy kid, you could help as a "colleague" and make introductions.
I purchased the MCT plague unit for this year as well. I even picked up their western philosophy package too. My kid is only going into 4th grade but he is gifted so we will see how this goes. I may have to wait another year.
I saw their philosophy books as well. I may pick those up also. At first there appears to be so many different types of curricula out there but when I take into account the learning preferences of my own kid and pair it with what I know she will need, subtract what schools and people think she needs, the list gets short fast. I have been slowly leaning towards these PBLs and other books at Fireworks Press... and Waldorf science... I'm in the "I'm taking the summer to think about it" phase right now.
@@ThePattersonHomeschoolAcademy Very true. I resisted MCT for two years due to their price but it is a very good fit for my kid's learning style and I enjoy teaching it. Thankfully, they have a good resale value since I don't have another kid. My husband looked at their science experiment manuals and was excited to teach him the stuff out those too. They are worth looking at as well.
Mystery Science and BookShark Science are Problem, or Inquiry based, as well, although not quite to this level.
Yes, with variables the kids need to identify. I didn't know that about BookShark. I have looked at them in the past but seem to get distracted by something else each time.
