People make it seem like this is the first time it has happened to a famous person. It’s happens to numerous celebrities and it will continue to happen.
This has not happened to a famous person, it'd unique to his case, not like any other. Ohtani is very naive.

What is the media's responsibility for creating this chaos? No one seems to feel sorry for Ohtani after this outcome.
This was the first account opened when Shohei arrived to USA, 2018 with help of his interpreter to register a US bank account for salary. Since then It was deposited salary and other income but it was then never used by Ohtani. Ohtani had subsequently many other accounts arranged by his agency which he actively used and was managed by staff.
That account Ippei had access to was basically dormant for Shohei and not connected to electronically alerted since mail nor mobile wasn’t really established at that time and he could always add later. While Ippei was the contact person.
That first account still had frequent deposits of salaries and other incomes and deposits still was much bigger than what Ippei withdrew so the balance was growing anyway.
And Ohtani never checked it..since he never used it.
One more thing about Ohtani that nobody is mentioning. This is from baseball reddit and I saw in a japanese TV show too:
"There is this crazy story from when Ohtani was still in NPB about how he chose to stay in the rookie dorm facilities beyond his rookie year (which apparently is uncommon) & gave his entire salary to his mom who would give him a monthly stipend. By the end of 2 years doing this, he had saved almost his entire stipend. So not only was he not spending the bulk of his salary, he had spent like $2,000 or something silly like that over the course of 2 years.
Edit - So I looked this up & it appears that his monthly allowance was $900. He spent some on ‘sweets’ (crepes in particular according to an old OC Register profile) & saved most of it. Dude really is a machine."
In the end of 2 years he had more than $10.000.
I feel sorry for Ohtani. That's terrible that someone you trust could steal from you.

Ohtani's parents had been transferring money to his account since he was in Japan, but he never looked at it, and when he was with the Angels, he turned down invitations to party and gamble in order to train. He has also been known to sleep 10 hours a day to concentrate on baseball.
The fact that he never looked at his accounts at all is something he needs to improve on in the future. But Ippei is terrible for taking advantage of such a baseball-loving man and cheating him.
Apparently Ken is the only one that read the case documents. The affidavit, DOJ Presser and Press Release provide the case details.
Maybe, if the thee of you read the affidavit, press release and listened to the presser, you would be up to speed instead of asking Ken to bring you three up to date.
These wannabe UA-cam commentators can't even take an hour to read the affidavit. That is so lazy and irresponsible. They just look foolish spouting off without knowing the facts.

I worked in the Trust industry (managing assets for estates, wealthy people, and even corporate pension funds, etc.) for 20 years. There is a lot of embezzlement that goes on. The companies that are victims usually try to hush things up and hide as much from the media as possible, as it is bad look to the public. In cases where a large group of people are working for a wealthy person or corporation, there is a lot of cracks and holes which people can exploit. It's called diffusion of responsibility and the bystander effect. In today's world, everyone's job is so specialized and narrow that people know only their own job functions and tasks and are blind to the bigger picture or what others may be doing. Often, the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing. Lots of opportunities for malfeasance and lots of opportunities for lack of oversight.

He was Ohtani's friend. Teams don't have control over that. People with a lot of money should do a better job keeping up on their money. How did he steal $16 million and Ohtani didn't notice? That's the big problem with this story.

You have to be aware that it’s not just Shohei, but all his agents and financial representatives who speak English well have been completely deceived by Ippei ! And it was rather their responsibilities to have close eyes on money flows. I rather wonder why they haven’t set up on their own a Japanese language translator on their own and ask Ohtani directly?

That is a great point! I totally agree. Mizuhara must be such a sociopath to make other professional people believe in what his lies. Ohtani was kind of famous for his indifference to money he earns but only play well. Mizuhara is addicted to gambling but if you imagine what drug addicted can do, including hurting other people, he does whatever measure he has to take to cover up his lies. I studied neuroscience aspect of psychology in college. The reward pathway in the brain for addiction is almost same for drugs and gambling.
@@SomeChink It’s true Shohei trusted Ippei 100% but he also fully trusted his legal & financial agent’s and representatives’ capability, because it is THEIR professional responsibilities. It was almost their professional negligence than Ohtani’s personal mistake.
Ken's got a really good take on this. He's right, we probably will never know every last detail of this story (and we shouldn't, what a breach of privacy that would entail!). But this is a really strong case brought as a result of the investigation from 3 different federal agencies, and it really leaves Ippei with no room to maneuver. I don't know if Clarence Darrow can mount an effective defense at trial, the direct evidence in the bank accounts and messages is just overwhelming.
Even if Shohei was careless with his funds, _that still does not change the very strong allegation that Ippei committed bank fraud,_ and honestly pointing that out at this juncture is just demonstrating that hindsight is 20/20. He's a smart kid, he'll likely think twice before letting this happen again.
As someone with a Masters Degree in Law, Nobody ever serves the maximum sentence, there are Federal and State guidelines that do reduce the sentence. So Bank fraud is max of 30 years, the guidelines likely lower that down in to single to low double digit years. Lots of things play into that, including the cooperation of the defendant.
He's gonna get a relatively short sentence and get compensated by his boy Shohei when he gets out for taking the fall.

Because his income is already reported to the IRS in either a W2 or 1099 form. You don't need access to back accounts to prepare a tax return.
I know it's hard to feel too bad for someone who's net worth is in the hundreds of millions like Ohtani. But.number .1. He must feel so betrayed right now. How can he trust anyone again? And 2. Because of that ongoing pre-existing investigation, a source tipped off the ESPN reporter about Ohtani’s interpreters involvement with the bookie. Had there not been an investigation of the bookie going on, the investigation of Ippei wouldn’t have happened as fast. Actually, if the bookie wasn’t already being investigated, the ESPN reporter wouldn’t have been tipped about Ippei’s involvement and Ippei would probably still be stealing from Shohei’s account. It was just interview with the ESPN reporter that made Shohei’s agent and attorneys aware of the situation.

Because that account served only for the incoming salary, and Shohei never spends money from that account. The 37 page document indicated that no record of log-in from Shohei’s phone appeared which means that Shohei never checked into that particular account. He had other accounts for spendings.

This was explained in the video and report. This might sound surprising if you're not earning millions a year, but he has multiple accounts, all of which were supposed to be monitored by his team of financial advisors and accountants. Mizuhara helped set up the account he was stealing from when Ohtani first moved to the USA, changed the notifications so Ohtani wouldn't be notified of any changes, and told Ohtani's financial advisors that it was a private account no one was allowed to access. Since Ohtani's finance team never directly contacted Ohtani to confirm what Mizuhara said about the account, Ohtani was under the impression that his team was monitoring it the entire time. The FBI went through 7 years of communications between Ohtani and Mizuhara and found that they never discussed, gambling, wire transfers and the account. Furthermore, they have thousands of texts proving that Mizuhara was placing bets almost 25 times a day, recordings proving Mizuhara impersonated Ohtani to the bank to make wire transfers, ip addresss proving these wire transfers were made from Mizuhara's home, and they have records proving that Mizuhara deposited his gambling winnings into his own personal account despite using Ohtani's account to pay off debts.

FBI records show the wire transfers were made from Mizuhara's home. Mizuhara was also able to dupe Ohtani's agent, bank, financial advisor and accountants by speaking to them when Ohtani wasn't around. So no, they were not together all of the time. The bets were also placed online, not at a casino, and Mizuhara communicated with the bookie via text. He did not gamble 180m of Ohtani's money. He placed bets totalling 180m and won 140m, but took 16m of Ohtani's money to pay off his debt of 40m.

Why do people try to relate to Ohtani? He makes millions and from the look of things, Ohtani doesn’t care about money. Rich people don’t check their bank account every month. It’s happens to so many famous people and it will continue to happen moving forward.
Given all the information that's out there, I doubt you are/were a well-informed fan. There are people out there who genuinely do not care about their bank balances because _they never had to._ You and I probably have to, I check daily, but we don't have millions of dollars coming in from the Dodgers.
