I am Italian, I grew up with Music and I am touched that such a small, and foreigner, girl loves so much ancient music by an author, Puccini, so far from modern youth.
As an Italian and as a lover of Music, I bow to this extraordinary, small interpreter of Italian Opera music.
Thanks Amira, the Gods of Music are with you.

I do not watch talent shows. Ever! But I ran across Amira's video while searching for something else. I was and still am enthralled by her voice. She has an incredible voice and perfect pitch and tone. What a wide range she has too. She is only 12 years old now, but I believe she will be the world's best opera singer by age 18. AND, she sings other musical genre songs great as well. I bought both of her cd's, and I rarely buy any music. I love her singing Nella Fantasia. She is also very modest and generous. Proof that angels live among us.

None of these talking heads know what they are talking about. Amira Willighagen was 9 years old when she appeared in Holland Got Talent. She had only been practicing the song she sang for less than 2 years; she did not practice 10,000 hours. While her family is musical, no one except her sings. She was also champion long distance runner for her age 2 years in a row and she told the judges on Holland Got Talent she wants either to be a singer or an Olympic athlete.

Thank You, Daniel Coyle, for pointing out that the parents' job is not to force their kids to excel at an acivity, but to "throw the seeds" out there & see what your child responds to, what THEY are passionate about. Clearly, Amira sings from the heart & would not have studied so hard on her own if she did not love singing...

Yes, Amira's charity ( 'Gelukskinders Foundation' ..... "all children have a right to play") is her life. She sings from her heart and with a heart that big almost an unfair advantage. Her "Sound of Music" tribute rivals the music industry's best. Just an incredibly humble performer and decent human being. Special young lady.

Some one like Amira can't be created. They have to come into the world with the potential to achieve great things in their chosen field. The enthusiasm, and the skills and the body. Then they set about developing those skills if the desire is strong enough.
We are lucky that all the pieces came together in Amira, but she wasn't born a blank sheet of paper on which anything could be designed.

This little girl has a natural talent. Geeze, there are many people who can practice til the cows come home, and they are not going to have what this little girl has. People can have trained voices yes, but this little girl was born with a God given talent. I love music and have listened to music all my life and have always wanted to sing, but alas I was not gifted with a natural singing voice, and probably couldn't sing that well, even if I had lessons, but it wouldn't be for lack of trying.
This little girl with her larger than life talent, along with training, is going to be a world renowned Opera singer.

I sang opera at 9 years old. I listened and listened to a Verdi opera, Rigoletto, and loved the major soprano aria, Caro Nome. I just loved it. But I was born with a certain type of voice. I sang before I could speak, at 9 months old, my parents told me. At 4, I listened over and over to the King and I and memorized the governess's soliloquy, as well as other songs. It's talent combined with exposure to the music you love. My mother sang and my great grandfather and great-great grandfather were cantors (leading music in synagogue) in Europe. So it's in the DNA in my family. They are acting as if it were inexplicable. It's both talent and exposure.

Well as an american i can say Anderson Cooper doesn't speak for me. His comments about Holland were stupid. This girl has talent in abundance. Her singing is beautiful. But to sing like that she had to practice as well as have natural talent. This discussion is stupid, because you can love something a lot and practice it all the time but unless you have a talent for it, you won't be great.

I think what this actually shows is how youtube can ' jump start ' an interest in something that can lead you to ' chase your dreams '. And you just never know where those dreams will take you. She initially did this as a lark. She just wanted a chance to be on TV. Just to sing one song that she loved. THAT was her dream. Little did she know what was about to transpire. Two performances later she wins Holland's Got Talent and barely 6 months after that she's singing solo in front of 15,000 people on a stage with world famous conductor Andre Rieu ! Yes she obviously had talent, she was gifted, but it really surfaced and she discovered it herself during all those hours on youtube teaching herself to sing. And now at 13 years of age she is absolutely incredible. What a voice. And all of her success has allowed her to fulfil another of her dreams (and this was again at 7 years old). She has established a charity that builds and maintains playgrounds for underprivileged children. I guess what I'm getting at is that all of this started with a little 7 year old girl sitting in front of a screen, singing along with her favourites on youtube. You just never know what'll happen if you chase your dreams.

My father was an instructor pilot. He said most people work and work and work and eventually become good enough to fly the plane on their own, but once in a while he'd find a student who seems to know by instinct how to make the machine do what they want. On the inverse there were a few people who, after several lessons he could tell would NEVER learn to operate the plane safely. This had nothing to do with desire, twice a students he told he would no longer teach, and they should no longer try, found another instructor who let them solo and they crashed the plane (one died). Talent is something we are all born with. The trick is finding our fields of talent.

talent is not something you can learn...you either have it or you don't. Can't believe you people don't understand this. To stress the point, you can practice for the rest of your life with as much passion as you can muster but you will NEVER reach the level that a 9 year old with talent can. Talent doesn't actually need that much practice, it just is.

Uhhh The Voice is created in The Netherlands. And I have major concerns about the quality of the lessons on school about the history of America and the role Europe played.
Amira has enormous talent. In my opinion talent develops with training and effort, so its a mix of things..

I would be offended by this guy too. I'm and old woman, American by birth/accident, a book fan, not TV, but human by choice...all blood is red. Ashamed that there are borders and religions, external things that pull us apart as humans.
Amira is a natural talent. Her parents exposing her to beautiful music gave her a direction. When she's grown up she will be able to tell us that something in her knew all along that singing was what she was meant to do.
(I grew out of God a long time ago, so give credit to Amira for responding to the pull of her life) I do believe to some extent there is a genetic connection, but it could be so slight that it skips generations like a recessive thing.
I'm an artist. As a child poor/white, one of six children. By the time I was six the only exposure I had to art was the Rockwell paintings on the Saturday Post. But I knew I could do what he did. I would stare at the magazine covers longing to know how he was able to do what he did. My older brother received a paint by numbers kit for christmas when I was almost seven (I got lifesaver candy) and I stole it, did the paintings. I got how Rockwell did the contours of a face to bring it to life by the varying colors or the way he used the brush strokes.
I've never been taught, but I still paint. You won't find me or my work on the internet. I don't care if my work is shown in galleries. The few times (like 3) I've done juried shows I've alway taken awards...but I don't much care. I've sold painting and have never kept track of who bought them or what the painting looked like.
All I care about is what I see and how to put down, how it makes me feel.
I'll be traveling to the Baltic REIGON (not listing countries/don't believe in them) this summer to paint, so if you see and old woman who doesn't speak your language in your country out there painting...it might be me. Who knows my eyes may capture you as something beautiful, even if I don't know you.

This comment about Holland fron Anderson just made me embarressed for Americans. No wonder we are disliked abroad. No wonder other countries see us as ignorant, ego-centered people. Believe me, we are not all so full of the belief Americans are the best, biggest and top dog. Culture can happen here as well. Our media doesn't always show it.

You can be born with a talent..you still have to practice. You have to learn technique, range..it is not a case of just opening your mouth. But if you do not have the talent..you can not ever be that good by just practice.
It takes both. Talent gives you a foot in..practice and striving can make you great.
I want to hear Amira when she is 20 and 30...

oh my god, anderson cooper.. seriously! who cares if she was born with talent or if she trained 10,000 hours... the girl was obviously born to sing. don't question it, just listen to her and shut up! she is incredible and i would love to fill my daughter's ipod with her music. what we have for "music" these days is garbage. she is a breath of fresh air. we, as americans, should be taking lessons from her and her family. expose and involve your children in wholesome activities like music and dance or even sports if music and dance aren't your thing. it's so sad that "art" is dying. lady gaga and katy perry are NOT "artists"... their "music" can't even be called music. and i love how she trained herself by watching youtube videos! almost every skill i've acquired over the years from soap making, jewelry making, metal work, sewing, etc. I've taught myself to do by watching youtube tutorials.
and what the hell is with the comment he didn't know Holland had enough people to have a show like that! seriously? the reason why we never hear anything about Holland/Netherlands is because the Dutch mind their own business, don't cause anything terrible or worth reporting on the news in the US and we all know that the news inthe US only reports on bullshit. the last time we heard anything about the dutch was Joran Vandersloot and that's ONE person... one bad seed - compared to millions of bad seeds in the US and other countries... but they blew it up and made the whole country look bad because of one person and his family.

I think that there are people that hear music, and love it.By my experiance and just life you if you are what is known as a natural can take the reins in music without even being able to read a note play music and sing if you feel what is in a song, timing melody, and can keep from being afraid to execute what is in your heart.

It's good to see that a lot of (for us) foreign people do know what en where The Netherlands are. But i'm always suprised when a American doesn't know The Netherlands, because a big part of the USA history is made by Dutch people. And besides that we invest a big deal of money (we always have, even in the American Revolutionary War, pro USA and against the British empire) in de USA economy, we are a small, but very rich country. We are world wide known for our: travelling spirit (we explored the world), our great trading qualities around the world (VOC), our county is beneath sea level, but it's dry (because of our water skills we are asked all around the globe for help with water problems, flooding, dredging, etc), we also make a lot of international tv shows and off course we are known for the Dutch Reformed Church, which is the "motherchurch"of almost al reformed churches world wide...
So somebody must be very ignorant, if he/she doesn't have a clue about what The Netherlands is.
Edit: i must be ashamed of myself, i forgot one of the biggest things we are famous for, the paintings of our Dutch Masters in the style of the Dutch School. (frans hals, rembrandt van rijn, etc..)

Anderson Cooper's guest is wrong in his assumption that Amira learned how to sing as she does because of "practice". It took Maria Callas decades of practicing several hours every day to develop her voice to such an awesome state. It is not even remotely normal - or possible - for a random child to sing like this even if they practice from the time they say their first words. Amira came into this world with the skills she developed in prior lifetimes. You can see the same phenomenon in action with Jackie Evancho, Akiane Kramarik, and other child prodigies.

Wow, as an American, I cringed watching this, in fact I was outraged - is this Anderson Cooper truly such an insensitive buffoon? He immediately sets out to insult the people of The Netherlands, and is idiotically casual about it. I was stunned. He should be held accountable by his network. Then, he and his guests proceed to denigrate Amira's GIFT. It is true that talented and gifted singers typically must study and train for thousands of hours with coaches and teachers . . . but Amira is not typical, she is something of a miracle in her raw musical ability.

Someone like this can come from a country with only two people. And this is natural, we don´t force kids into something like many Americans do. She wants this herself, she isn´t forced into it. Also kids are very protected, she isn´t allowed to perform constantly all year through.

This still makes me laugh in despair at the discussion. Not once was natural talent mentioned. Sorry, I was not born with the vocal chords of Amira or the eye hand coordination of Tiger Woods, so no, no matter how much I would have practiced singing or golf would I have become as good as either one of them at what they do brilliantly. We can just ignore that the host didn't know there were enough people in The Netherlands 🤣🤣... or the expert not having done his few minutes research on Amira's family to know that neither of her parents are professional musicians! 😊🥴🎶
