"The difference between winning a Kentucky Derby and losing a Kentucky Derby is a US$ 75,000 paycheck for the jockey who won the race and a US$ 100 paycheck for the jockey who arrived in 6th. or 7th. place" Gary Stevens (1958 - ) Hall of Fame jockey in an interview realized to him in 2000. Greetings from Venezuela.
Gary Stevens i grew up in a unique small town in the suburb of Boston only 30:00 minutes, but the traffic is bad .I grew up in Lynnfield ma. The best high school in the region of the towns around Lynnfield. I grew up with horses and when i was young i my mother took to the North Andover riding academy and went into horse shows jumping fences. i went to Dean college graduate of 1977 while i was going down the backside at Suffolk Downs.I went to BU University of dental technology and worked in a dental laboratory crown and bridge which is an art and craft and then i went to Suffolk Downs when it was flourishing with the best trainers , and big purses . My father had the biggest food brokers association in new England states, nj. new Hampshire, NY , sad he took a heart attack in 1981 sad i was called on the loud speaker ,while i was at the backside at Suffolk Downs so i drove home.I grew up in a large manision in new England on the ocen .I had a golden retriver where i would be in the family room with a huge brick hearth fireplace and had good wood for a winter fire. The first best female jockeys were Denise Boudreau who i knew very well and went to Gulfstream park in Hallandale Florida in 1984 and worked on backside and bumped into a trainer eddy hess who trained young horses which Dennise Boudreau, who owned her farm with Roland Hopkins wanted me to work some horses out and said i did a great job. She passed away with brain cancer. Gulfstream park in those yrs was great and now when i watch tvg now it's a terrible racetrack. When i went back to Suffolk Downs in 1984 like i said it was at b it's best purses. Victor Espinoza started thier, i new him ,Stewart Elliott and i were friends and Rudy Biaze not that long ago took a bad spill when thier were young riders that were terrible. Rudy Biaze was number one the best and one misty morning when in those yrs like i said was flourishing with the best trainers and horses .A trainer wanted me to breeze and work on the wood because the next day, the horse was in a big purse and won easily. The trainers used me for only breeze and work on the wood when thier was horses on the outside. Rudy Biaze said to me Barry shulman your the best exercise rider meaning, i weighed about 119 pounds. I don't know if you ever heard of the other best female rider in the country Mary Ann Bogachow who i knew and also said to me Barry you're great rider,Stewart Elliott on Smarty jones who respected me and a t one time he was to heavy. gary Stevens i came down with a rare autoimmune illness heritory which my grandfather had. Why do bad things happen to good people. I doubt you will read this long message, it was passion, you know to be a good rider you should know how do other things like doing a horse's leg up medicly. Gary one morning after i work out some horses i went to clubhouse stand and saw Kathy Ritvo who worked at the consesion stand sellig coffee or something do drink and food asked me Barry i would like to work with the horse's and i said check it out and haven't seen her in yrs and Gary i saw her that day with mucho macho man and you rode him to win the breeders cup. i was at Suffolk, the day, the space ship exploded. Dennis Elliot, brought me down , from Canada, that winter, with 6 horses. i quit, an hour later, and went to W.W. Perry. Run, 4 times, Won 3 One , was Hasty Game, another, Paris Blade. I walked "Let Burn", every day. went on, to Kentucky, Florida ,Illinois, Pennsylvania, California. Worked for Hall of Famer's, from my first job, in Lexington, KY. at, Penninsula Farm,. Worked for Richard Mandela, in Cal. The day i left, i was waiting a Van, to Canada, at Santa Anita. Mandela, asked, if i'd like to walk, a couple horses, before i left. One, was Momma Cimba , track record holder. the other was Lauralie, track record holder. i was brushing "Gentleman", over at hollywood park ,who had a "puss pocket", in his front foot. mandela brought him, off that , lay-off, right to his breeder's cup win. shoulda stayed!
