For what it's worth, when you file, you do so slowly in one direction by going down and forward. You then lift the file slightly and repeat the process until the desire results. By filing back and forth hard and fast without lifting, you wear out the file prematurely. You also want to have a handle on that file as it make it easier to control the file. It's safer too.

For no annoying music, I give it a thumbs up. I'm 65 and all I have is a small drill press at home. Been in machine shops when I worked. G84 Z-1.5ROF8.56, Tapped on lathes, mills, tap machines ect. I do a pretty good job at using my milwalke hand held drill for tapping. I did make tapping blocks for s.a.e. and metric taps and have them to help. I liked the video, and would use this methiod in a second, but I don't have the patience to make one.

Excellent Idea. I've been toying with buying an junk drill press and converting it to a tapping machine but your video has caused me to rethink this. I could do as you have here and expand on the use of my drill press.

very ingenious but maybe a little detail was overlooked: Normally taps have a square butt made to go in its spinning tool, when you put them in a drill chuck with 3 jaws they tend to shift a little so the tap "oscillates" when turning.

Hello Wayne, read your idea last night and leapt into the w/shop this morning to try it out, it most definitely works superbly , all I had to do was loosen the quill spring. I was tapping 8mm thick aluminum plate to receive a M12x1.75mm steel bolt, thank you.

i have been a cabinetmaker for over 40 year and have never seen the router used in the drill press like this. I have a cross vice and could make a jig to hold the router so I have control over the feed of the router. I have been using my metal lathe to do precision wood turning. Not any more! great use of the drill press table holder. great vid!

A tap this size can be cut with the drillpress itself. Just put it in the chuck and run it at a low speed. When it grips in the hole apply light pressure downwards and turn it off when you are deep enough to finish by hand.

A lot of work but in the end, it what you intended
I have been making tools for a living for 33+ years. A much simpler thing to have done is to make a chuck wrench. Drill a hole in some stock, the same size as the bottom of your chuck, drill a hole in from the side so you can slide a pin through your wrench and into a chuck key hole. Put the tap in the chuck and tap your hole by turning the chuck with the wrench. You will be perfectly aligned with the drilled hole in your part, in the vise.

That was a fairly good idea. It might inspire me to make something similar. I find get the hole tapped squarely from the start to be the most difficult. It always seem when the first thread starts to cut, it pulls the tap to one side.

If you don't have much equipment to build something for tapping square, Use a piece of wood (brandering which is normally 38 x 38 mm) or anything suitable, drill a hole the size of the tap's shank through and tap. If necessary, add a spacer below the top part. It's important that the shank locates enough in the top part. This is a simple, inexpensive way to get an excellent result. Use the same method for your hand drill. I have been using this method for as long as I can remember. If you have proper equipment, built a good one from metal. Happy tapping.

could just install a reverse switch on the drill press , then power tap to start the tap or to do the complete thread( depending on depth ) ,.. its always surprising how easy power-tapping is once you've done it 100 times. nice job on the adapter.

I see where the idea goes, but you can get an auto reversing tapping chuck (€300-500, so only if you do a lot) which will fit into a most drill presses, and you would just need to go to the lowest speed, power it in and power it out, (or use a cordless drill/driver in a cheapo Aldi/Lidl universal drill press) doing it by hand is fairly easy unless you have perhaps only one hand

    Wow. Nice.
I'm really scared of hand tapping. Your brilliant solution doesn't solve my problem, tho. I need to tap M4 holes into the central pillar of my Sieg SX2 mill to attach DROs. Hand held power drill to drill out the starter holes followed by M4 hand taps that are sure to break. Solve that and I'll be first in line to buy your creation.
    Regards,
    Gareth.

Are you using lubricating oil to keep taps from heating up? Also you might have to turn 1/4 to 1/2 turn and turn back always your tap cooled and clean.

Improved version could allow to: fix the item in vise, drill required hole in position, mount tap without moving item, make thread without moving item.

  • @jasnic2131
    @jasnic2131 10 років тому

For that thin flat plate it's a bit of a waste I reckon, however, if you're going to tap some really thick bar or something then this idea is awesome it will keep the tap square relative to hole and less chance of breaking the tap.

Nice idea but the table on my 1890's automatic tapper does not come off.
Then again, I have an automatic tapper that reverses at a set depth.
I have yet to figure out the resistance reverse function.
And it has a 3 sided drill chuck installed rather than a 4 sided one to grab taps.

такая приспособа хороша для нарезки резьбы большой партии и большого диаметра. а два три отверстия с резьбой например М8, не стоит и заморачиваться, хотя идея не плохая. лайк

Very creative, could be Very handy if you're doing much tapping. Good video editing too. When you buy a better chuck, might as well get some better calipers while you're at it. Like some with a dial on it, aka ''dial calipers". Keep up the creative projects/experiments. Take care, from Tn.

IMO this could be better. You already have created a stable support that centers on a given axe the cutting tool... so maneuver it by its drive with a simple ratchet instead using a fixed tap handle, threading manually you gain speed and leverage where more force is needed and it cant go wrong anyway because the alignment is forced by the bearings...

The reason you don't do it by hand is because if you have many threaded holes to make and/or they are big, you get tired and it takes longer...but if you do it right you can do it mechanically....you just have to take your time and line it up and clear the cuttings like you should.....

Why don't put the tap right into the chuck and let it feed py it self? For little ones, tight gently so it will slip instead of breaking. If it slip, put on reverse, clean the hole and go in it one more time and so on...
