These have a yurt feeling, or like tents where a structure is covered with a canvas and seem good for yoga spaces, greenhouses etc They're also more affordable than others, and therein lies its appeal for people on a shoestring that need to get a shelter up fast but if I was looking for a permanent home I might also want to add adjacent pods coming off in the design and at any rate built out of wooden struts for the shape and panels that can be insulated and water-proofed.
i loved it and found it was good to watch music or not i was thinking the frame would go up from the top first and lifted but that was much easier i can see they have thought of every thing with the stove pipe and insulation etc and screens and all the ventilation great work ..

This is like a giant tent...monolithic domes in Italy tx has more structural/permanent sound buildings that can withstand tornadoes and hurricanes category 5 tent way they build them.....though I would probably use something like this for camping
This is to get around building codes. Monolithic are not geodesic. You can also concrete these domes but it makes them perminant then you need to pay for paperwork.
Monolithic domes have their own particular problems. You have to be very careful about temperature and pressure while forming the dome or serious structural defects occur that may not show up until much later. And you have to have special equipment.
Urutu C - I was thinking the same, sort of. Before thinking about the music, I thought about the "video" which was obviously transcribed from a film / movie. A Google Search found that the Whole Earth Catalog / Domebook 2 was printed in 1971, and that Pacific Domes was founded in 1980. Decades ago "hippies" bought the domes and they liked that kind of music. Yes, the style of American music has . . . changed over the decades.
This is very interesting way to put up a good tent fast! However the background music made a problem for older people to hear all of what was being said!
Insulation for humidity/moisture? Screwing the tent fabric to the deck does not seal the structure. Do all windows and ventilation have sealed zip covers ? Moisture would wreck this beauty and everything inside. Or maybe just in Florida lol
How do you keep mice etc out if you only screw in the fabric with grommets every so often? We've had terrible mice in the yurts with a similar set up. Thanks.
If properly assembled there shouldn't be enough give for mice to enter. Other than that it's about the same as keeping mice out of a traditional homestead : )
Our domes have survived some fairly severe weather, including a few hurricanes. Would it protect you from a bear? Seeing as I recently had a bear rip off my two inch thick cabin door, Id have to say, probably not! Our covers are certified for fire fire retardancy, and can pass some of the strictest requirements across the nation. The covers on our domes last from 15 to 50 years depending on how they are maintained and prepared. The Frame itself can last 20-50 years, depending on how it is prepared and maintained.
I like the overall idea, but you forgot to add a pipe to pipe outdoor air into your wood burning stove. You don't want all your oxygen used up by the fire! I wouldn't be very comfortable with a fire inside a flammable structure like this. Are there multiple fire exits?
Fun fact, the domes pass the California fire certs! Some of the most strict fire certifications in the nation, domes don't burn easy. As for fire escapes, domes can come with as many doors as you would like.
The kits are precise in the measurements of the struts. Mathematics says they will. If they don't they won't be off by much. I've made the frames myself and as long as you follow the math, they fit together every time.
I, too, have built several of these pipe domes. It's not hard to measure the struts, and the geometry is forgiving of minor errors. It makes a pneumatic structure that tends toward self-correcting.
+alanlee2000 - We have not produced any videos of our domes in the snow. However, WhitePod has, and they are a major client of ours. Check out this video vimeo.com/82286742

This was orignally posted in 2012. It is now 2017. My question is how has this dome survived the last five years or so. Have they found it to be more of a tent? or functional living space?
Hi Peter, our dome covers can last over twenty years if taken care of. In the past five years or so we have moved away from canvas to a vinyl material which has an even longer lifespan, and is easier to repair.
Great yurt dome. shame they dont have these setup in areas of the USA for all the homeless people. this would help them more than over crowed shelters that dont have enough room for all the unfortunate souls that need a place and are camping in areas that seems to offend those that are not homeless. Shame those that have a place dont seem to think that it could ever happen to them. but all it takes is the companies they work for to shut down and do massive layoffs. ( Shame should it ever happen to anyone but those are the facts.)
WTF? I cannot understand some people complaining for nothing. They paid nothing to watch, they were not forced to sit through it. They chose to watch of their own accord. If you don't like it, leave, there are thousands of vids to watch. Go find the perfect vid for you, and keep you insults to yourselves. My parents always taught me, "If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all." I think that goes for insults on you tube just as well. If you have nothing constructive and positive to say, piss off.
+Gokhan Great idea. It is certainly possible to take advantage of the structural stability of a geodesic dome and insulate it with natural materials. We have fitted our domes with Wool in the past, and other clients have used our domes as a foundation for straw bale and cob exterior.

Top down build is also an option, but you need a scissor lift. So people find it easier to build from the bottom up.

Insulation for humidity/moisture?
Screwing the tent fabric to the deck does not seal the structure. Do all windows and ventilation have sealed zip covers ? Moisture would wreck this beauty and everything inside.
Or maybe just in Florida lol
The domes and dome liners are mold and mildew resistant. In areas with a lot of humidly we recommend dehumidifiers.

If properly assembled there shouldn't be enough give for mice to enter. Other than that it's about the same as keeping mice out of a traditional homestead : )
How will this structure stand up to tornadoes, hurricanes, or fire? Would it keep out a bear? What is the expected life span of such a structure?
Our domes have survived some fairly severe weather, including a few hurricanes. Would it protect you from a bear? Seeing as I recently had a bear rip off my two inch thick cabin door, Id have to say, probably not!

how high a wind can it take??
Depends on the size of the tubing and the type of structure it is set on / how it is anchored. On average around 100mph wind load.
Domes usually fare pretty well in high winds.
