Fantastic review! I haven’t read this one by King yet, which is strange because people keep telling me that this one is probably right up my alley. I think that’s maybe why I haven’t read it. I’m afraid that it’s been over sold to me and will disappoint me. The things you discussed here in your final thoughts makes me want to read it sooner rather than later.
To answer your question, I don’t like animal and child abuse either.

It is a slow burner, which in my opinion, has two scenes that are absolutely devastating by how they are constructed.

I love this book so much. Not only is it a dark and scary book, it’s a great story about the passage of time, life, religion and addiction

Right! Like this book covers a great deal. It's one of King's best.

How nobody gave this book a film adaptation is beyond me! This is my favorite Stephen King book since The Green Mile.

100% but tbh I'm afraid if they did a movie, they would screw it up.

I read this in January when I was in rehab in Northern PA. Very grim and Lovecraftian. Perfect for read in a repurposed elementary school in Amish country.

    Spoilers
One of the things that unsettled me the most about this story is that while it was easy for me to understand how after such a tragedy one may lose faith specially seeing how the entire Jacobs family was so kind and loving towards everyone, completely undeserving of ending like this, it was more difficult to grasp how such a good man could have become basically a monster ready to use anyone to achieve his goal. Especially thinking that he hoped to learn what happened his family /where they were if they existed an afterlife and perhaps even attemt communication with them. Surely he should have known that if there was an afterlife and his son and wife existed there keeping their conscience they wouldn't have wanted him to become a monster so he was ready to face them after all his wrongdoings. It really saddened me how this nice man basically died with his family that day and the realization that it may happen even to the best of us is probably the scariest concepts in this book.

I completely agree, and when I describe this book to my friends, I tell them it is such a heartbreaking nightmare to see how he changes, and then to realize many people also undergo similar changes due to tragedy.

I started my King Read A Long this month. I have the whole library but have only read a handful. This is on my list to get to this year.

Salem's Lot. I read it when I was alone in a cabin in the woods when I was 14. When I got to the part of the kid tapping on the window I slammed the book shut and finished at a later date.
My trigger is the brutalization of childern.

Great review as always Alex! And the King book that definitely disturbed me the most would have to be It. And I agree about animal or child abuse being things I have to be very careful about reading, and rape is another one that I generally don't like to read about

How did I miss this upload? Well anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the book, Alex . I think I said in my previous comment that it was one of my favorite books by King and I probably said it was in my top-3. Having read it again recently, I think I would rank it second behind PET SEMATARY. What can I say? I like the darker ones and I think it's some of the tightest storytelling King has done. I don't think King has come anywhere near topping this since its release in 2014. Don't get me wrong, I like some of the books after this (THE OUTSIDER and THE INSTITUTE I enjoyed quite a bit) but they're more like good King books while I hold REVIVAL on another level. I also think I might've said that this book influenced me the most as a writer than any of his other books and that still holds true. The influence is apparent in my two most recent works-in-progress. The relationship between Charles Jacobs and Jamie Morton sort of influenced the dynamic between the characters of Grady and David in my novella, BUNNY BOY, which I hope will be out sometime next year. And of course there's the cosmic horror aspect of the novel which is pretty much what I write. Of all of King's books I wish more people knew about and would be turned into a movie, this is it...but I'm also terrified of Hollywood screwing it up especially now that Mike Flanagan has left the proposed project. But anyway, I think I've gushed enough and I'm really glad you liked this one despite its darker tone.
Now, here's another recommendation (and I think it could pair well with REVIVAL): DOUBLE FEATURE by Owen King. Owen is Stephen's youngest son and DOUBLE FEATURE is also a coming-of-age story with deep and complex themes but it's much more of a comedy. It's another one of those books that I really love but I don't see a whole lot praise for it out there. It's the best book written by somebody in the King family not named Stephen. It's better than anything Joe Hill has written (and I love NOS4A2!) but it's better than Tabby's stuff that I've read.

Omg thank you so much for suggesting Double Feature. Am about to look it up.
And again, thank you for suggesting "Revival." That book has haunted me ever since I read it and it will definitely be included in my top 3 scary books this year.
Also, keep me posted on Bunny Boy, would love to read it.

Wow you have the best recap among all reviewers. I love Revival, and I think the Terrible Sermon is the most heart broken part because Jacobs lost everything by then. Isn't Faith the base that brought him to who he was? He is the opposite of Job; rather he is like Jacob who fought with the angel and reached his own blessings. I always love religious writings like Brothers Karamazov or Crime and Punishment. I wish King wrote more of this type.

This one was such a huge miss for me. I think it's mainly because I'm non religious. Glad to hear your thoughts :D question 1: none, he's never gotten me yet. 2. I haven't found a topic I wont read about yet. Thought I tend to stay away from anything religious because they are a huge miss on me (Imaginary Friend -.-)

Hey! Thanks for answering! I'll admit the only other book that scared me by King was Gerald's Game. Otherwise, for me, his work either falls into creepy fun or depressing.

Adultery is the one topic I really don't like reading out. Guy murders and cannibalizes his secretary? Yeah ok. Starts an affair? Ewwwww, no thanks.
