Great Review Phil... I think Magic Factory are on a winner. Better decals (compared to Tamiya), detail - rivets, no seen ejector pin marks. The front screen forms part of the fuselage. The front Oil cover section (forward of the front screen) forms part of fuselage and seem lines - not split (Tamiya). Weight on wheels. Just to name a few... Cheers.
This one is going on my shopping list for SMW next month. I've built the Tamiya kit as well, and one pro that the Magic Factory kit has is the wing panels being molded as one for the extended wings. Thanks for the review, Phil!
Really glad this kit is available now. I saw the prototype at the Malaysian Model Engineering Show in Penang earlier this year and it looked fantastic.
Phil, you mentioned somewhere why you thought it odd that the -2 had the birdcage and the (earlier) -1A had the bubble. This was because all -2's were modified early birdcage -1's with added radar for night-fighting and one machine gun omitted to balance the weight of the radar housing. Only 34 of these conversions were carried out.
@@florymodelsyou’re welcome Phil. Love the shows and particularly the humour and ‘warts’n’all’ approach. Showing how to get out of the shite is far more important to most of us than anything else! 😂 BTW, congratulations! 🎉🎉🎉
Besides the wing fold option,, the build sequence looks very similar to the classic Tamiya kits. Also the outer wing panels on the Corsair were fabric covered.
Well i look forward to the build! The tamiya is so solid & easy to acquire cheap its tough to beat BUT for the detail & modification builder maybe this is an 'Eduard-ish' option...
A personal opinion only... while watching your review I noticed that the "fabric" structure on the wings looked like it could stand some toning down... might just be me, thanks Dane
I’ve built 2 Tamiya Corsairs this year and really enjoyed the experience. I’m interested to see if the Magic Factory offerings take the ‘best 1/48 Corsair’ accolade off of Tamiya .
Nice review Phil. Question does both kits in the box come with both wing options? Ie you can build both wings folded or out? One of the weaknesses of the Tamiya Corsair was building it wings out and getting a great fit of the outer wings. Ill buy these just for that alone removing what was always a pain. Cheers
Warning, Phil is mistaken you CANNOT make both kits with the same wing option. One kit has to be folded and one unfolded. Look at the instructions on scalemates, not only is there only one of each wing spar, the instructions also clearly state it between step 11 and step 12. So I repeat: you cannot do both folded or both unfolded, it's one of each.
As a Corsair fanboy I'm really looking forward to this build, unfortunately the company I pre-ordered with (prior to this review) dropped the ball and it's been delayed quite a bit. As I type this, I've got 10 Tamiya 1/48 Corsairs, 3 other company Corsairs, and a 1/32 Tamiya Corsair in an IKEA cabinet next to me, with another half built in a shelf of doom (resin aftermarket hell) so I'd like to think I know my way around that kit. It certainly has some issues but has held well considering it's a kit older than me. Interested to see how well the Magic Factory goes together, it definitely has more refined surface detail (and yes, I know the Corsair DoEsN't HaVe ReCeSsED RiVeTs as some folks harp about in forums, it's a necessary inaccuracy to make the model more interesting in the end, I don't see people complaining that the Tamiya 1/32 does it). Little bit of a shame that the kit doesn't come with the early birdcage canopy without the bulge, while I know the F4U-2 never had the older 'flattop' birdcage it would allow the modeller to make an F4U-1 without any aftermarket OOB. It is nice they got the F4U-2 radar correct with the square housing, whereas Tamiya provide one that looks more akin to the F4U-5. I feel a bit mixed on the way the wing fold is handled, the Tamiya kit definitely suffers as it can be really hard to get the wings lined up nicely if building unfolded and often ends up needing filler, sanding, and redetailing to look perfect. That being said having it the way MF have done with two models, one that *must* be done folded and one that *must* be done unfolded is a little annoying as personally I wanted to do both unfolded, especially considering the majority (but not all) of the F4U-1As and F4U-2s were used from land bases and as such the wingfold mechanism was rarely used, often having the automatic hydraulics removed in the field to save weight. It reminds me of how Eduard do things, for example their dual combo Bf109E set where you look and see 13 schemes to choose from and it seems like so much choice! But in reality one model *has* to be a Bf109E-1 with only 3 schemes for it (which personally I didn't particularly like the schemes for), when you bought the kit and wanted to build 2 Bf109E-3s. I get that it's done to save plastic (Magic Factory would have to provide 4 complete wings in this set rather than 2), but it's a bit annoying for the consumer if you don't do research beforehand. Especially when the box-art shows two models with unfolded wings, something you can't actually do with this set. But then again if every set had box art indicitive of what the kit provides, then you'd never have any in-flight box art since having out of box wheels up options has gone the way of the Dodo apparently.
Unfortunately the manufacturer name is wrong on your headline at the foot of the video, it reads ' Model Factory ' instead of ' Magic Factory '. Kit looks awesome but one for the stash as everyone under the sun will be building it on release. Social media will be saturated with Corsairs, although the flip side of this is for the same reason I could start my Eduard Zero!
is there one set with wings folded and one with wings normal or can both be folded of normal? From the unpacking of the box, i only saw two times the wings on sprue (one folded and one not)?

I don't know if it's my phone or what, I don't have this problem with other videos, but every thing is kinda blurry, not too crisp, can't see the directions clearly, love the channel though

Just ordered this kit, very excited to say the least. There's also an MG R2800 engine upgrade kit available.
It was a fantastic review of a beautiful model kit. Look forward to your next review.
Looks really nice. Plus rwo complete aircraft.

Ah!! Thant makes sense. Thanks for the info Richard, very interesting :O)

As a note, the last two -2's were -1A's with the radar and gun deletion, the rest of -2 production were birdcages.

Looks like they are “simulated” fabric covered much like the Tamiya kit.
Well i look forward to the build!

This kit was on per order last week now sold out in the store this week here in Australia

Yes you get two full kits in the box so you can doo both wings folded or down :O)
