- I'm sharing my experience diving into Pax Dei, the new social sandbox MMO from Mainframe Industries. I totally forgot I applied for the alpha back in June 2023, so I had no expectations going in.
The graphics? Stunning. And that gritty medieval/Norse Viking vibe? Totally up my alley. However, after spending a chunk of time in the game, I started noticing some issues...
In this video, I lay out whether Pax Dei lives up to the hype. So if you're curious about this new social sandbox MMO hit that play button and get the take of a 51 year old gamer. If you enjoy the content, don't forget to subscribe and stick around for more gaming adventures.

Thank you for this point of view! You hit the nail on the head here.
I also feel it's meant to take time, it's meant to be chill, there is no real rush to progress to some elusive endgame.
Also the world in it's current state is only a tiny bit of what Mainframe has planned for the future release.
Kudos for this!
Yes, and I wasn't expecting that because I didn't do my homework going in... which will be a problem with a lot of people who buy the game not knowing what it is. I'm really glad that I persisted and changed my approach with Pax Dei. It's a game I'm really looking forward to now.
@@Zulubear U and me both!
Excellent first impressions review! I felt the same way you did when I started and I know the majority of other players did as well. It's a bit shocking at first, how the devs want you to play their game. It made me angry even at times lol. But then when I got over myself and my preconceived expectations created from playing games like Conan, Rust, Ark, etc, I began to enjoy myself. You definitely need to kind of clear your mind a little and accept the game for what it is and what it wants to be and not what you expect it to be. I can't wait for early access!
100% the same.
I really hope this goes the Wurm route. It would be great to have a modern take on it.
There's definitely a sense of accomplishment in Pax Dei when you're standing there looking at that little house that you built with your own two hands. I also like how that sense of familiarity, of "this is my area" sets in pretty quick due to you basically doing the laps over and over again to gather materials. You'll have your boar spot, your cotton spot, your ore spot, your deer spot, your mushroom spot, careful, wolves to the left, etc within only a couple of hours. Good way to tie you to an area. It can get a bit annoyin when you need the better materials (like e.g. heartwood) and can't get them as fast as you'd like due to not having the better tools you'll need to get more or them but - yeah, just more reason to connect with other players and trade with them.
1. Its a european developer so the vibes are european-medieval which I like.
2. PD is meant to be played in a group or guild, You can't craft everyting yourself.
3. PD still seemed half finished, farming, farm animals, mounts, trading and some more social features are still missing.
I really appreciate the perspective, and helpful setting of realistic expectations for people interested in this game. It will be a long game, and will be most enjoyable working with others. Also can't wait for Early Access!
I just checked out the steam board and nothing good being said there. I really hope they take player input and better the grind. Also, what is the unique thing about this game? Im just not seeing it. Im not into pvp, so pve crafting it is. What else? This game reminds me of New World.
@@MistaH1N1 Yeah, you know, people on Steam love to complain about everything and anything. I mean, there's still people there who're STILL harping on about "cut" content in CP20977 that was supposedly promised by the devs ... some people just got no life, I guess.
Hah Peasant simulator xD love it!
I played the alpha pvp test that had no pvp😂
This game has a long way to go in my opinion. The crafting mechanics and obscene grind required put off solo players and the tiny storage chests make being in a guild a cluttered logistic nightmare!
I shall wait until the combat and crafting is overhauled before i look at it again.
This definitely not going to be a solo mmo. Specially if there are no NPCs or anything else driving you as a solo player
No, but it's possible to play the role of the village hermit who wants to live alone. :)
Im looking forward to ea, the alhpa was fun even as a solo, i just traded mats for gear. Then i traded my house for more gear. Joined a small group with all the necessities to be hunter gatherer. We got chain mail and started running points of interest. Ran a cave and got a unique crafting recipe for a sword.
Its the combat that disappointed me. No weight to it, but it was an alpha.
Also the peogression made sense, we only had a week and if people can get top gear in a week, this game would die quick.
Thank you for this excellent report on Pax Dei. I enjoy exploring, mapping, and gathering, and I thoroughly enjoyed the alpha test. Looking forward to hearing more from you if you participate in Early Access.
I'm definitely playing to play in Early Access.
The crafting system certainly feels that way, if that is not made less tedium and more fun Im opting out of this game.
And that is fine. Pax Dei is definitely not made for everyone.
looks a lot like Valheim to me
It plays similar to Valheim - but as an mmo.
@@Zulubear Valheim has community servers with over 100 people on them though, that run smooth and have enticing community engagement (for the most part)
like a very beautiful shittier version of Valheim all the amazing looks with none of the content of Valheim. I am just so amazed so many liked this garbage.
I think this is a better version of the Chronicles of Elyria scam with a bit of eye candy to make it more believable.
Don't agree at all...
Can't compae these! PD is a playable game in Alpha with a lot of working features and running quite stable. CoE on the other hand...there is nothing so far! Nothing!
@@Kosty19 pd is Valheim with no features period.
@@henryramos4185 you do realize we are talking about an alpha and that is a good thing? It needs work but the building is fun. Combat needs a complete overhaul tho before it goes to early access.
dude sounded like someone gived up and converted to christianity after shaming....
