Inevitably, most of these people were not proper miners, and many were not even well equipped to make the journey west to start an expensive venture. In the song the miner has a daughter named Clementine. He can’t afford to buy her shoes, so she is wearing small wooden boxes on her feet, referred to as “herring boxes without topses. “ The boxes are also referred to as her sandals. Because she is wearing rough wooden boxes on her feet, she gets a splinter which causes her to stumble and fall into the water as she was driving the ducklings into the water. She drowned because her father, the miner, could not swim and therefore could not save her. “Dreadful sorry, Clementine,” he sings.
@@kukaliemikalie8157 I think that part is supposed to explain why he didn't at least TRY to save her. Most fathers would jump in, knowing they would drown, just to attempt a rescue. Just at a chance to save their daughter. Except this father has a SECOND daughter for which he is responsible and therefore couldn't die trying to save one daughter and possibly leaving the second daughter and orphan. Afterwards, he returns home and kisses the little sister, taking comfort in knowing that he made the best decision for at least one of his children, and trying to make his peace with the loss of his other daughter. Life was much, much harder in the 1800's than it is today. Losing children was not uncommon. You needed to accept the tragedy of it, move on with life, and be grateful for what you have.
I don't understand it, because it is supposed to be from the perspective of Clementine's lover, this means that the lover could not save her, not the father, that is, the "dreadful sorry" part refers to the lover and not the father

Sorry to be "that guy" but British became used as a term after the union of England and Scotland to be inclusive, so "British and Scottish" is redundant. Without the union there would have been no "British".
I find it both hilarious and saddening how everyone is misinterpreting this song, though it's understandable because only about half the verses are included in this rendition. It's a man mourning the loss of his girlfriend and then moving on to her sister(which was common in that day and area, as people were few and far between), not an incestuous father mourning his daughter and then getting with his other daughter. This song is meant to be darkly humorous.
Such a beautiful song this is. My dream is to sing this to my little daughter one day. Recently went through a breakup with the woman I thought I was gonna marry and have kids with. Hold on all of you wherever you are in your life
Y'know, I see a lot of people misinterpreting this song in the comments, the meaning should be obvious, is about a father, the miner, who lost his daughter Clementine because he couldn't swim to save her and missed her deeply, but he had other daughter and was able to move on with his life.
Misinterpreting? The lyrics are quite clear that the narrator is not the father. It's someone who was in love with a miner's daughter, but couldn't save her when she drowned. Then (in the last verse) he kissed her younger sister and fell in love with her, so everything ended up fine. Like many folk songs, it's morphed and become genericized.

Back in the 70s, I wanted to join a vocal quintet in my high school. In order to get in, I (along with a whole bunch of other kids) had to do a couple of minutes A cappella (my choice). All the other kids did something either upbeat and/or contemporary or Amazing Grace. When I started singing this there were lots of jaw drops and snickers, but I got Mrs. Simonson's attention and made the group. So I have a soft spot for this song.
My dad used to tell me about a fisherman and how he lost his daughter and sang this song to me. Now he recently passed away. Every time I hear this song reminds me of my dad 😭😭😭
I'm here the old fashioned way-- looked up the lyrics to the "someone's in the kitchen with Dinah" song and got lost in a rabbit hole and that is how I am here today.
Huckleberry Hound. Because of this HB ´s cartoon I recognised the song. But I could never imagine that funny, happy, clumsy, and blue dog was singing such a sad song. Perhaps even He did not know about it, or the cartoon would be sad, too. Thanks for the song/ lyrics, very nice and deep !
Why's that? She's still alive, and probably will be for the rest of the series. Imagine the shit storm that will come if TellTale kills off Clementine.
KoalaCandy I know, what I was referring to is her tragic history, how she has lost so much, and became a hardened soul. I hope to God she doesn't die, I will go fucking nuts. She's my favorite character.
Meaning of the song: A man describes how he lost his late girlfriend (Clementine) in a swimming accident. The man could not swim so he did nothing to save her. The man meets the girls sister and falls in love because the sister reminds him of Clementine. When he in in the company of the sister she reminds him of Clementine and the pain temporarily goes away. But the man has not forgotten his late lover and she will always be in his thoughts for the rest of his life. Note: The final lyrics to the song are "Dreadful sorry Clementine." This was my interpretation. I find it hard to believe that the writer would intend for Clementine to be simply forgotten after the man falls in love with her sister. It has happened many times in history where a man would bed the sister of his late lover because of the strong similarity. P.S. This video sounds so much better when you speed up the song to 1.25.
the introduction of the song is : "In a cavern in a canyon, Excavating for a mine, Lived a miner forty-niner, And his daughter Clementine." so the 3rd person is used. Then we hear the 1st person : "Oh, my darlin', Oh my darlin', Oh my darlin' Clementine. You are lost and gone forever, Dreadful sorry Clementine." So obviously, the main character of the song, who says "I", speaks actually about Clementine (his late girlfriend, and her dad who was a miner - just in order to present the context, who she is, where she comes from. Nothing about incest, then...
Doesn't this dude want to come and sing me to sleeps? Lol! I know it sounds crazy, but he has such a lovely warm voice! Would be so nice to have him sit there singing to me as I fall asleep. These songs bring back so many memories for me
It's based on a true story about a guy who was in love with a miner's daughter and one day when they were in the river she stubbed her toe and fell in the water she wasn't able to swim coz she swallowed water but the guy wasn't able to help her coz he didn't know how to swim so he watched her die and sink in the water her little sis almost committed suicide so he stood beside her and helped her and he kissed her everyday on her cheek coz that's what clementine used to do to calm her down he helped her and she helped him forget clementine she was 6 years old at that time
Charlotte Rhodes “Oh My Darling, Clementine” is a traditional American folk song, commonly credited to Percy Montrose (1884). The lyrics have changed over time, and what started as a sincere lament became a parody. Clementine is the daughter of a 49er, a miner in the 1849 California Gold Rush. But she drowned. As the song progresses, the changes become evident, with the tone turning tongue-in-cheek. The second verse, for example, mentions the size of Clementine’s feet: so big she wears boxes instead of shoes.”
Over my years I would go through spurts of parts of this song singing in my head from when I was a little kid. Dont remember where or rly when I first heard it, but after all these years typing the part I knew into google and found it! It makes me feel weird now knowing what its all about, but even as a kid I remember it making me sad. It still does.
I actually came here because of Max Lobo from the movie " Banana fish". Ash was pissed off when he sang "Oh my darling clementine" again and again because he doesn't know the Lyrics 😭😂😭
Melanie Burton Uh, is that don't "spell" it for you or don't "spoil" it for you? Why don't people use spellcheck? It doesn't catch the "your" for "you're" errors, but it can be a great help with other errors. Usually. :-o
Read the lyrics if you're confused about the song. The guy is a miner, his daughter drowns, but his pain is eased when he kisses her sister (his daughter), meaning he had another child whom to love. Idk where y'all are getting the idea that it's about siblings kissing and incest crap...
I sang this in a Choir in elementary school, and randomly while watching Star Trek: Voyager the EMH started singing this (S6E1) and it blew my mind that I could still recite most of the lyrics. Immediately started singing along. Music can be such a trip.
Damn, this song has deep meaning. I always believe in deeper in every part of life, And this is one of those golden thing. I grew up with this tone, as the bell tome, school bell, and child music, but I always felt creeped out and sad yet calm with the tone, Now I know why, its mind blowing really.

Re: It's Okay Not To Be Okay The other version of this song fully encapsulates MY's first nightmare after she went back to her hometown. The father actually attempted to be with Clementine again. She still haunts him in his sleep and he still sees her rising up from the water and he kisses her when she does. This goes back to Episode 2 with her nightmare. Instead of blood on the floor, it's water and there were footsteps going up from the basement like someone went out from the water. The way her mom's demon paralysis monster looks like she's floating on water on top of MY is a sign too. And also the fact that in her nightmare, young MY was looking out into the lake with her mother slowly rising above the water asking for help. My theory is, the father attempted to kill MY's mother but he was always "a step too late". He probably pushed her into the water or something and he may have wanted to drown her. She probably survived though. I'm pretty sure it's the lady in the flower robes. She always has her hair tied up and is always reading a book. MY's mother always had a fixation with her hair and books as well.
@@duxsiol_2546 when you suffer extreme trauma from what I know, you tend to repress your memories of the past. As we can see, MY never has the courage to look at any of her mother's portraits. I don't think she remembers her face that well. In the episode where the auntie was claiming she was MY's mom, MY believed her for a while. She said, "Is it really you, mom? Are you really back?" It hints that even MY herself doesn't believe her mom is dead. Joori hinted at this in the first episode too saying "but your mom is still alive" or something along those lines. Even the director of the hospital says after her last book, she was missing. Only five years after was she announced or considered dead. Most likely MY's mom is really still alive.
I remember this song being taught to us when I was in kindergarten. We all had to sing it, and as I think back on it, it seemed like kind of a silly kids song (and I thought it was about the singer's lover, not his daughter) (and as a 6 year old, I never understood the part about "49er",it sort of reminded of the foot ball team, and I never understood what actually happened to Clementine), but I didn't know what the song was actually about, I knew it had some kind of sad tone to it, but I didn't know just how sad and dark (and I guess mature) it really was. Now, when I listen to it, I'm kind of taken back by it.
it hit different to me even more cause my music teacher in like 1st-2nd grade had taught our class, “oh my darlin, oh my darlin, oh my darlin clementine, you were lost and now i found you, oh my darlin clementine” and not the real lyrics. like damn i just wanted to re-listen to this song for some nostalgia not to cry lmao
+Jeramy Herlitzka it's the same in every version of the song, just because the little nursery rhyme videos make it seem that it's her father singing it, it's always supposed to be her lover.

@Chibiardo doesn't have to be based on a real thing dude. Just listen to the damn song. Most song tell fake good stories
@Chibiardo the song last kiss isn't even about the Wayne Cochran. It's about someone else. But he used that story to write a sad ass song. My fav is when Elvis plays it. There are 4 artist that cover Last kiss

Amazing Grace was about a Slaver that felt remorseful for what he did and so he wrote this song and get all religious before he died.
This is a beautiful, yet dark song.

TheComicBookGuy they put this in the game
Meaning of the song:
A man describes how he lost his late girlfriend (Clementine) in a swimming accident.
Note: The final lyrics to the song are "Dreadful sorry Clementine."
This was my interpretation. I find it hard to believe that the writer would intend for Clementine to be simply forgotten after the man falls in love with her sister. It has happened many times in history where a man would bed the sister of his late lover because of the strong similarity.
P.S. This video sounds so much better when you speed up the song to 1.25.
😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
He actually does forget her, this song is supposed to be darkly humorous.
TheNewRiflemanBob Clementine is his daughter tho
Girume That's debatable.
the introduction of the song is :
"In a cavern in a canyon, Excavating for a mine, Lived a miner
forty-niner, And his daughter Clementine." so the 3rd person is used.
Then we hear the 1st person : "Oh, my darlin', Oh my darlin', Oh my darlin' Clementine. You are lost and gone forever, Dreadful sorry Clementine."
So obviously, the main character of the song, who says "I", speaks actually about Clementine (his late girlfriend, and her dad who was a miner - just in order to present the context, who she is, where she comes from.
Nothing about incest, then...
This is so touching
How? He just gets over his daughters death like nothing and even forgets about her
He kissed her little sister and forgot Clementine.(in song) WTF!!

@@charlotterhodes7359 Some answers are just true
Charlotte Rhodes “Oh My Darling, Clementine” is a traditional American folk song, commonly credited to Percy Montrose (1884).
The lyrics have changed over time, and what started as a sincere lament became a parody. Clementine is the daughter of a 49er, a miner in the 1849 California Gold Rush. But she drowned. As the song progresses, the changes become evident, with the tone turning tongue-in-cheek. The second verse, for example, mentions the size of Clementine’s feet: so big she wears boxes instead of shoes.”

Read the lyrics if you're confused about the song.
The guy is a miner, his daughter drowns, but his pain is eased when he kisses her sister (his daughter), meaning he had another child whom to love.
Idk where y'all are getting the idea that it's about siblings kissing and incest crap...
+thief1434 - The guy singing the song is telling the story. So, it's him kissing Clementine and her sister, not their father.

Re: It's Okay Not To Be Okay
The other version of this song fully encapsulates MY's first nightmare after she went back to her hometown.
Athena Banana But why is it that KMY doesn't recognize her? And she was always reading the mother's books, maybe she just wanted to imitate?
Athena Banana True, I do believe the mother is alive, just skeptical of her being Park Okran. Anyhow, really excited for this weekend's episodes
@@persiepony this is gonna be awesome
When we all thought the lady in flowery robe is KMY’s mother...
Its worse actually this is The short version
The “You are lost and gone forever” hit different
it hit different to me even more cause my music teacher in like 1st-2nd grade had taught our class, “oh my darlin, oh my darlin, oh my darlin clementine, you were lost and now i found you, oh my darlin clementine” and not the real lyrics. like damn i just wanted to re-listen to this song for some nostalgia not to cry lmao
Wait, what!? Those are the lyrics!? D:
Your childhood too?
Ladybird Lovelace Yeah ;-;
This was just depressing.
you didn't realize that before? i almost cried in the class first time i heard the song, and none of my friend understood why.
DaemonEdgear Beautifully haunting song, the _only_ nursery rhyme that years later I played (and still play!) on my guitar. :)
DaemonEdgear same broooo
Some of you thinking it was his daughter... It wasn't his daughter! It was his fiance! and he forgot her when he moved on to her sister
In this version of the song, it's his daughter, and he moves on when her younger sister is born.
+Jeramy Herlitzka it's the same in every version of the song, just because the little nursery rhyme videos make it seem that it's her father singing it, it's always supposed to be her lover.
