Ahoy Captain permission to come aboard? That is one fantastic land yacht! I mean that as a sincere compliment to the owner. Although but the breezeway open you go down to the box lumber yard and shove a couple 2X4s in back there. I'm sure somebody did that when these cars got a particular age that they bottomed out on value. But this one's fantastic inside and out. I've seen that on forge about 10 years newer where it catches the heat from the exhaust manifold. At the right time the heat buildup opens up the spring on that trapdoor. I want to say it was a 1967. Anyway fantastic car if I haven't said that enough. That would make a great Christmas calendar car. Santa would love to ride in style. Thanks again to you and the owner of the car for showcasing it.
That Merc has got be fairly rare. I don't recall ever seeing one come into the gas station where I worked all through high school ( '64-'68) and we saw at least some of just about everything. She's a beauty for sure!

I dig the scalloped fins along the sides, the breezeway rear window and the roof air ventilation scoops with their little antenna projections. The riot of color and chrome trim on the insides. Just a lot of over the top style baked into cars from this period.
She's a beauty. I grew up in the era of 'Turnpikes'.. We lived in New Jersey and would drive the Pennsylvania Turnpike into PA to visit our rellies. You would get a paper ticket when entering the Turnpike and you paid when you took your exit and the amount you had to pay to use the Turnpike was dependent on how much of it you used (how far you drove on it). There are still Turnpikes today. There's one in Orange county CA, and one in the LA area that come to mind. They're basically short cuts you can take to get around the heavy traffic jams as certain times of the day.

It appears speed enforcement is more stringent these days, as the fee back then was simply collected with a simple "next time, please keep it under 100" admonishment, instead of the demands for bank tranfers these days.

I'm so glad to see you have replaced the brake master cylinder with a dual reservoir master cylinder. please get you some seat belts and shoulder harnesses. And how about some adjustable headrests. I would hate for you to crash into your windshield in a wreck, because you weren't buckled in.
This was a very very expensive car when new and chock full of all sorts of power-assist goodies nobody had seen in production vehicles. Problem is Ford had its hands full (and NOT in a good way) with Edsel and the economy was in the tank. Beautiful car and very rare. Thanks for sharing.

I didn't spot him there the sneaky shit. Manual windows bud. Surprised me a bit, I figured they'd be electric. The switch just below the windshield is for the the back breezeway window. And the one on the door is the door lock
I had a chance to buy one of those when I first got divorced but passed on it because it needed a complete new interior and all glass due to some Jenks attempt at arson
Nice job and a lot of attention to detail. I would surmise that the car had power brakes originally but the upgrade to the dual master cylinder and vacuum booster as well as the disc brakes is a plus. Reading up on the Ford vehicles the 1957 year introduced padded dash and dished steering wheel. Also, as an option customers could get seat belts. Naturally during that time these safety features were not embraced by the customers. And as you know these safety features were mandated by the federal govt in the 1968 on vehicles. Now this vehicle is a shining example of a "land yacht" and I would guess that the car would probably get around 18 mpg on the open road.
Love those Turnpike Cruisers: and on long trips - with kids in the back seat - the window rolls down! You'd think they'd offer a combination suitcase rack/playpen cage feature for larger families.

People not born at the age of repairing carburetors overlook the fact that they can not add fuel outside of the accelerator pump circuit, only added by the speed of air and a certain amount of "Brunelli's Principle" otherwise called Venturi vacuum / port timed vacuum signal. So, once adjusted, the air/fuel ratio is fixed but the temperature of air controls entering at 145 degrees to 150 degrees F. This is an analog attempt to maintain a 14.2: 1 air to fuel. The bi-metal element moves quickly to operate the blend door between hotter and cold. Yes, richer for a reason. Cold engines of this era have pistons that are egg shaped and narrow across the wrist pin as it grows as brought to full temperature. Castings and design were more about function rather than power. If you remove the coolant circulation pump off an inline 6 cylinder that had a very simple brass trumpet shaped tube with direction slots stamped on the cylinder side, slightly smaller at the front and larger toward the rear. It directed coolant between the cylinders from passenger side to drivers side. The circulation pump created a low pressure area to move & pull coolant forward into the radiator after a thermostat opened. A technician was taught to spray water on the block after 15-20 minutes. They were told to watch how much & quickly it turned to steam. If much slower at the back, then the coolant directional tube on this Buick Chief should be pulled straight out the front and a new brass alloy tube was installed. Easy, as the intake & exhaust were both on the drivers side. Warming the intake would create vapor the engine could use to create better cold weather operation. Yes, engineering was mostly an OJT experience. Bi-metal device controlled shutters in front of radiator on large truck like the short lived company that built "Diamond REO". We had one for grass fires in town at fire station. DK, ASE master retired.
Why do people say that? "It is not fast by any means." Nobody ever thought it would be fast. It is a shame all cars are compared to Hellcats now with 700 HP.
Back in the day it wasn't fast, wasn't meant to be. If you wanted fast you bought a supercharged T Bird. My comment wasn't meant to be negative just an observation that it is a cruiser and a very capable one at that.
I think I get where you're coming from. I have a GT350, say "It's quick, but not the fastest thing out there. Was not the goal of this car, it's a track/ handling machine that will hand many 'Faster' cars their asses in it's element. It'll still kill you quick, too, if you don't respect it"

Yes, pretty rare. They made these in a 2door Htop Wagon as well. I've never seen one of those in real life only pictures

Sweet car for a more door, had to take a close look to even tell it had a back door it blends in pretty good.
The lower roofline like the 2dr htp help it a lot. The 4 door post car is about 2" taller and doesn't look near as nice
