🎼 “El Camino del Santo Grial” (The Way of the Holy Grail) is a symphonic poem that sets to music the historical route taken by the Holy Chalice from its arrival in roman Hispania to its present location in the city of Valencia.
In 258 AD, Emperor Valerian began a persecution of christians in Rome in which Pope Sixtus II was beheaded. Before he was martyred to death, the administrator of the Church's goods, Saint Lawrence sent to his native land of Osca (Huesca) the Holy Chalice used by Jesus Christ at the last supper, the most important sacred relic in christianity.
From that moment on and over the years, the Holy Grail was kept in different hermitages, monasteries and romanesque churches in Alto Aragón, being the object of worship of the faithful, receiving protection from the arab invasion of 711 and inspiring numerous medieval novels and legends.
In 1399 the king of the Crown of Aragon, Martin I the Humane, took it from the Monastery of San Juan de la Peña to the Aljafería in Zaragoza. When he died, his widow Margarita de Prades moved part of the reliquary to Valencia around 1415. Finally, in 1437 king Alfonso V the Magnanimous gave the relic to the Cathedral Chapter of Valencia, where it can be visited since 1916 in the Chapel of the Holy Chalice. In 2014 Pope Francis granted the celebration of a Eucharistic Jubilee Year in honour of the Holy Chalice every five years in perpetuity from 2015.
