By The River

D’un bord à l’autre bord j’ai passé la rivière,
Suivant à pied le pont qui la franchit d’un jet
Et mêle dans les eaux son ombre et son reflet
Au fil bleui par le savon des lavandières.
J’ai marché dans le gué qui chante à sa manière.
Étoiles et cailloux sous mes pas le jonchaient.
J’allais vers le gazon, j’allais vers la forêt
Où le vent frissonnait dans sa robe légère.
J’ai nagé. J’ai passé, mieux vêtu par cette eau
Que par ma propre chair et par ma propre peau.
C’était hier. Déjà l’aube et le ciel s’épousent.
Et voici que mes yeux et mon corps sont pesants,
Il fait clair et j’ai soif et je cherche à présent
La fontaine qui chante au cœur d’une pelouse.
