Glitter ✨✨✨💕. Now here's some backstory. Glitter is actually a Soundtrack to the movie Glitter, which she starred in. Also this was her 1st project on her new label , Virgin Records.(this relationship/contract ended abruptly after this) I can't speak on anyone's behalf but as an OG Lamb, I was so excited about this but 9/11 occurred (it was a Tuesday) & most attention was elsewhere, Naturally of course. The Movie Glitter was supposed to be released on that Friday, if not mistaken. However the studios held the release i think til the end of September. It really didn't hit either, Naturally because of still dealing with the aftermath of 9/11.
I saw it in the cinema, it was just such a weird time in the world that anything wouldn't have done well, it's just such a shame she had so much riding on it.
So for ur questions abt how fans and the people received this album. This album was HORRIBLY received to put it simple. Firstly, it was released on 9/11 so it did VERY poorly in terms of sales, this album is a soundtrack to her movie called “glitter” which also did HORRIBLE, it flopped so badly and I feel SO bad for her cuz she overworked her ASS off with NO days of sleep from her rainbow tour the previous year (2000), the countless interviews, the making of the album AND movie combined, she was a literal machine with strict deadlines that she could BARELY meet even with getting ZERO sleep. She actually had meltdowns and a few of them went public and she was ridiculed like crazy, literally, because EVERYONE called her crazy because she started having meltdowns in the public eye because she was SO overworked. It was SO bad that she had to get hospitalized at one point and she was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder, so she would sometimes have manic episodes or symptoms LIVE on tv and it was so sad because she was so tired and just needed rest and nobody would let her rest cuz of the deadlines. It was all over headlines that she was hospitalized and that she was “crazy”, it became popular to hate on Mariah. Nobody liked her during this time period and everyone ridiculed her, she actually DREADS this period of her life and it almost killed her. Literally tho, because her depressive episodes were so horrible that she didn’t wanna be alive anymore, she’s said countless times how she actually hates this album, the movie, and this period of her life and tries to forget it because of how traumatic it was for her. Not only that but the burden of it being on 9/11 meant that NO one’s attention was on her nor her movie nor her album, so that’s a HUGE reason of why it all flopped horribly. Interestingly enough tho the lead single “loverboy” did peak at #2 in the Billboard hot 100, it was her first lead single to not go #1 which is crazy cuz every lead single from her previous albums had gone #1, but even with all that it STILL managed to somehow get #2 which is pretty ironic. Lastly to add more fuel to the fire her psychotic ex husband Tommy Mottola, the one who groomed her, controlled her EVERY move, and threatened her while she was with him and his label, he actually sabotaged her during the making of this album. Long story short, Mariah’s single “loverboy” originally was going to sample another song which she had already locked in for herself, but he somehow figured this out and he got to the sample before she could and made JLO make a record of it with a VERY similar melody to the one Mariah had made for her song, FURTHERMORE she was planning to do feature-duet with Ja-Rule but again, her rat of an ex stole this idea too and JLO ended up singing on the sample Mariah was gonna do with Ja Rule on the song called “I’m real”. This was also part of the reason that almost killed Mariah (she said this herself in her book), because on top of working so OVERLY hard, her work had gotten stolen and she had to RESTART… it’s actually why Mariah doesn’t like JLO to this day and the reason for their infamous “fued” and what birthed Mariah’s iconic shade line “I don’t know her”. U can do a deep dive on all this on UA-cam there’s multiple vids on it going into depth it’s really interesting but frustrating and sad at the same time. Mariah would remain the butt of the joke for some time until her MASSIVE comeback in 2005 with her album “the emancipation of Mimi” which granted her Multiple hits and even song of the DECADE with “we belong together”. And all of a sudden it was cool to like her again, cuz ppl are fake lol. Btw ik this comment is all over the place, I tried to shorten the whole thing as much as possible and just rambled on what came to mind atm lol. Like I said, u can do a deep dive on the whole situation with this album with the multiple UA-cam videos going into depth on it.
Oh and ik I’ve yapped a ton already but one last thing, Mariah did eventually come back around to liking this album, sort of. In 2018 there was a hashtag trending called #JusticeForGlitter, and the fans literally streamed this album like crazy and it went #1 on iTunes 17 years after its release lmao. She actually said after that that she DOES like the album in itself, she thinks it’s a good album but it’s what came along with it that almost ruined her life (her words). So basically she now has a bittersweet relationship with this album and doesn’t hate on it or completely ignore it like she used to❤️

Unfortunately just like what everyone else mentioned about this album when it came out the sales were not good, of course it was not of her fault , sadly 9/11 overshadowed that. The first album of hers to not produce a number 1 however Loverboy made it to number 2 which is still impressive, doesnt make this album any less amazing. Everything about her being overworked, no sleep & was hospitalized for exhaustion is all sadly true. This album being a soundtrack to the film glitter is based on a 80's setting so that's why the sound is much different from her other albums with a slight modern twist. I cant wait for you to get to TEOM album, that one is on fire! A major major comeback but first her next release album after Glitter is called " Charmbraclet." She was going through a time where she lost her father to cancer but still pulled through well with this record, she even did a def leppard cover on there too.
Glitter is in my top 3 of MC albums. I bought it very soon after I saw the movie because I loved the music especially as it relates to the movie. Everyone dogged the movie out but you can’t deny that the music is 🔥! I still play this album and sing it with my whole chest.
I love This album. It was produced well. I love the 80s so this was literally music to my ears. 9/11 is also my birthday. It was not commercially successful. This album should've been a bigger hit. Released on 9/11, movie didn't do well and she had a breakdown. Definitely needs another #justiceforglitter moment

It's always been justice for glitter in my house! It's one of my favourite hangover movies and the album has some genuine classics
