Radek Sikorski is right about what is happening on the western edge of the Russian Empire, but he misses the threat developing in the -Stans.
In 1920, during the civil war, there was, briefly, a Republic of Siberia, to the west of today's Siberia and encompassing several of the -Stans. Whether or not it rises again, is an empirical question. The puzzle at the core of it: climatic change is about to make Nikita Khrushchev 's dream of the rich golden prairie come true.
How will Moscow meet the challenge of ruling several rich Moslem nations in the middle of its map?
I think that Putin is sleepwalking in to Ukraine out of an unconscious need to avoid thinking about this real and difficult question.

Yes Applebaum is intrinsically anti Russian, albeit she is a good writer.

      He's a fine historian.
It's a real disappointment that he insists on including in every personal appearance a whiny, infantile, partisan attack on the political center. It's as if he feels he doesn't deserve the money he's paid by the right wing Hoover operation and feels he has to sing for his supper.
He doesn't, and didn't need to go to Hoover: his actual work, as opposed to his sad personal performances, stands up well.

At the time of the revolution, working people in the most advanced economy - the UK- were living as described in 'The Ragged Trousered Philanthropist'. The Millions that died in the civil war provoked by western containment, only matched by the millions that died in the imperialist class that sent the same amount of souls to their death in the pursuit of capital gain. Yes, Hitler came about as a Reaction to the failure of capitalist transition to socialism. That immense failure of obfuscation by the contemporary liberal class initiated the biggest calamity of all time - WW11 - and had a huge influence on the 20thC. Although Stalin completed a counter revolution against worker control of the political economy they still managed - by themselves - to defeat fascism and the annihilation of the Jews, and for us: forced our liberal ruling class to concede to a postwar Social Democratic democracy. Another upside for the point of Russia was its place as a world power.. Russia would be India today if not for this defence against western imperialist powers. As for Russia - they could not vote out Stalinism, unfortunately.. but still here we cannot vote out capitalism.. And we will need to constantly expose your infantile self-serving platitudes, because for some reason your verbal diarrhoea persists. If you do not accept acceptable policies such as those which generations benefited after the war commandeered by commendable reformists like Corbyn. Then watch out !! the revolution is coming for you!!

This discussion should have been staged in either St Petersburg or Moscow in front of a mixed audience who would have challenged these panelist about what they are saying about Russian History & the Russian People as a whole...Inspite of all the sanctions & vitriol directed at Russia - the people are getting on with life as well as hopefully electing a new President in March...

yes, and it's important to note that in spite of all the propaganda coming out of Putin's Russian, the average median income of a Russian family is still on a par with countries like Iran, Lebanon and Mexico. In other words, the "Putin Miracle" is NOT paying off at all! Enjoy feeding your cronies at the top the vast majority of Russia's wealth...it ain't going to the average Russian!

Really cool panel and great discussion. I tuned in because I'm a fan of Simon Montefiore, but Anne Applebaum (who to my knowledge has exactly zero experience in real estate and is a lifelong academic/author) spouting off about how the "entire NYC real estate industry in the 90's was Russian money laundering," and thus Donald Trump has deep-seated ties to the Russian underground is a little bit insulting the collective intelligence.
EDIT: As I'm finishing the discussion, Anne Applebaum is just unbearable.

As always Sikorski does not answer the question asked. He answers the questions that correspond to his kwolebdge about the topic which is very shallow so he can talk without saying anything meaningful. Discussions with Sikorski is a one way street, very boring and fruitless.
