I was fortunate enough to hang out with Jerry West a few years ago for an entire weekend. Let me tell you all something… HE IS AS HUMBLE AS THEY COME!!!!!!!!!!!! H.U.M.I.L.I.T.Y. I asked him what adice he would give young ppl today and he said this. “Be humble. Humility is not thinking less of yourself, rather thinking less about yourself.” Powerful.
I saw him two years ago in WV at a Walmart. He had a mask on because of the pandemic, and he just gave me a look as if he was saying "please don't stop me." So, I simply waved and nodded my head. He waved back and looked relieved as he walked out the door. He is such a great ambassador for the game and our home state.
Very good judgment on your part. I stood next to Jerry in his purple Laker warm-up as he dashed across Euclid Ave. in Cleveland in 1968. The terrible condition of the locker room at the Arena forced him to use the Holiday Inn.
What a class person! Nothing more needs to be said. Thank you, Dan, for your interview of Jerry West. I’m old enough to have watched him during his playing years.
I am unfortunate enough to have missed him but fortunate enough to learn via UA-cam his greatness as a player and a person. What were your impressions of his game compared to other guards of that time?
Jerry West was the ultimate competitor; gritty. Never gave up. He definitely was among the elite as was Oscar Robertson. I relish the series between the Celtics and Lakers. In my opinion, the “best”. I played college basketball, coached high school bb for 3 years and had season tickets with the Jazz during the Stockton/Malone era for 20 years. I would say I am not the biggest fan of the game today. I feel I have watched my share of bb over the years.
Doing the interview in his kitchen with a dress shirt on. Many ex-athletes have their trophies and awards in the background when they do an interview. Shows what a humble and classy guy Jerry West is.
I was a big Jerry West fan back in the day because he was such a great all-around player. On offense, Mr Clutch was a great passer that led the NBA in assists the year the lakers won the chip. The Logo was also a great shooter that had one of the best pull up jumpers ever. jerry was also a an all NBA defender as well and was so quick with his hands and feet not to mention his high basketball IQ. Jerry West is one of the greatest guards of all-time.
Remember when Jerry just chucks his MVP trophy through his office window all drunk yelling and screaming hahaha man Jerry West is AWESOME !!!!! The LOGO baby !!!!
I grew up watching Jerry, Elgin, etc, playing live at the Sports Arena & Forum, of course I listened to Chick Hearn religiously on the radio. Those were the days, I wish they never ended.
@@silewis9396 I watched perfection. Elgin, my all time favorite player "hanging in the lane" & was almost unstoppable. Jerry hitting clutch shots, great defense & an excellent passer. Take care.
The only autograph from a basketball player I ever had was from Jerry West. I was in San Gabriel Valley, about 15 miles east of LA, our school assignment was to write a letter to someone, so I sent Jerry a letter (c/o LA Lakers). I asked to write his height and weight and he did on a photo: 6'3", 190 lbs. The only other autographs I had were other #44s: Al Downing and Henry Aaron.
Celtics fan here. This hit me hard as Jerry was such an amazing player, gm and most important friend to so many people. It’s a shame that the lakers organization couldn’t bring him back in Jerry’s last years. It’s almost like the Celtics saying ok Red we don’t want you around or someone like John Havlicek. The lakers should ashamed of how poorly they treated Jerry. Heck bill Russell didn’t always have a great relationship with the Celtics especially early on. They made a concerted effort to bring Russ back and it was so heartwarming to see. I hope the lakers put a statue of west in front of the staples center pronto. Jerry west was the laker responsible for so many championships as gm, great player as well and the lakers organization wanted no part of Jerry. Just sad to see
Speaking of autographs, I DID get Wilt's autograph after the Lakers won game 2 against the Celtics in the 69 Finals. Wilt not only did not swear at us kids, he was exceptionally friendly and joking with us kids. Further, if I ever saw Jerry West, I would tell him that he still owes me an autograph, because he and Elgin Baylor sneaked out the back door after that game, and no one got their autograph. Beyond that, taking into account West's combined playing days with his executive days, I think HE is the greatest Laker ever.
Jerry West played both guard spots. If he had played in the 3 point era, he very well could have been in the top five. Multiple positions? Earvin Johnson could play every position. And he was the most effective at making everyone better, and leading a team. As did Larry Joe.
I hate when they say that you lose a Free Agent & get nothing in return. You still have the $$ you would have paid him to get another free agent or you can put it into improving your Farm System. Not saying you always get equal value. Getting nothing = bad Management or a greedy Owner keeping the $$$.
This dude won an NBA Championship THREE YEARS BEFORE I WAS BORN IN 1975....AND I'M FUCKIN 47 YEARS OLD...GODDAMN HE OLD BUT SHARP AF....IM JEALOUS DOESN'T THE ALL CAP GIVE Y'ALL A CLUE 🎉😂😂😊
Remember that Willis Reed was 15 and 6 against Kareem Jabbar. The Bucks won 304 to the Knicks 266 from 1969 to 74 and yet Kareem was 6 and 15 against Reed and the last two times they played in November of 1973 right before Willis missed 47 games that ended his career at age 31 held Jabbar to 18 for 40 shooting or 45% and 44 points in 86 minutes!
@@silewis9396 I know hoop..I love the game very dearly especially because it was taken away from me..the dimensions of the nba court hasn’t changed..the rim is the same size and height as well as the ball etc..if you can truly shoot you can light it up in your sleep and The Logo is a top 10 player all time to me and I look at impact on winning the game. West is the second greatest laker all time behind Magic in regards to impact and winning they just do more than Kobe Shaq Kareem
@@kb5509 No. That was a blatant dick move by Dan. Like he was testing Jerry's competence. I was surprised DP would ask that of Jerry at his age. I'm happy Jerry still has it.
Oscar Robertson is a bitter man, but understandably so considering the racism he had to deal with in his day was off-the-charts horrific. Also, many younger people don't give Oscar the credit for what a truly great player he was and would be today, which I'm sure chafes at him as well. Yes, West also is vastly underrated as a player these days, but at least he is recognized for being the logo and a great GM. So, I can see why Oscar sometimes comes across as the angry "get off my lawn" guy.

I treasure every single time when Jerry West is being interviewed. I could listen all day long to Jerry West and not get bored.
I love Jerry West - was lucky enough to spend time with him, and he is exactly how he interviews. Very humble.
Oh that’s fantastic. Must have been amazing to be in the presence of such a legend.

Always great to hear and listen to Jerry West. A legend
Rest in peace. There will never be another Jerry West.
It STILL, very much PAINS (THE GREAT) Jerry West to talk about Kobe😌
Yes, I felt badly for him that Dan brought him up. Tried to get Jerry emotional there. Not cool, DP.
My late father in law played at WVU with Jerry, he always spoke of him with a huge smile. I can see WV in him to this day
Jerry West is a true legend of the game and a fine man. Lovely interview.
A LIVING LEGEND

Jerry is pretty traumatized by his lack of trophies, I doubt he has a display anywhere. No modern athlete can relate to that many Finals losses.
Thats a bunch of bull.

In his book "West by West", I loved the story of Jerry picking up Kobe, who was a teenager, at the airport for his first meeting with the Lakers.
As classy a gentleman as they come. Much love to Jerry West.
Such a great wonderfully hosted interview 🥇
Jerry West is a national treasure. You could have him on every night

Jerry is so right about the ballhogs and the ridiculous three point shooting. You can tell Dan really respects Jerry.
It was nice to see both you & Jerry exchanging dialog. ❤
He had a great perspective on everything.

Jerry rules
DP just threw The NBA "Logo" a sidearm curve when he asked the iconic Jerry West what he'd do with Ohtani if he was GM.
Dan was 47 years old when wilt told him to get off the bus.

Has a Lakers fan it's Blasphemy what the organization did to him and know he's succeeded with other teams in California #respect
Not as a GM.
I not sure I remember the details, but didn't he get pushed out when Phil Jackson arrived?
This man is a living legend .
How he's still not with the Lakers organization, is disrespectful. Jerry West should be a Laker for life.
When Dan asked if he cares where he is ranked, if you are the Logo of the league, who cares about ranking. What a boss!

How opening with: "He's the NBA logo." That's all that has to be said.
That team he just put together would free that sweet jumper West had..West and MJ would lead in scoring
