Where were you 40 years ago when I was struggling to understand this? Your explanation of these basic principles is so much better than was presented to me by my instructor then! Thank you.

I like it that you gave us the What Why When and How made it easier to actually to Comprehend .Not everyone knows how to actually teach ,to make the other person understand .
    You Simplified the Explanation 😁

I got through trig in high school, and came out able to solve the abstract equations they presented. What I never knew was what good they were to me in my life.
Fast forward 30 years or so and I got into home shop machining. I bought a small lathe and mill and started making chips, which was fun enough. Then I bought an old copy of Machinery's handbook, and saw the diagram in the early pages regarding trigonometric functions. My eyes nearly popped out of my head as my brain made the connections between the abstract and the concrete.

Thanks Lazy one! Great video, love your style of teaching! So simple and laid back. We need a lazy teacher for real who takes things slow and keeps it simple. I just began a Machining Fundamentals course at George Brown College in Toronto and our professor used one of your videos to teach us shop safety. Great job Marc, really appreciate your work! Much respect!!!

    Marc,
Very, very nice lesson. Many I know learned the basic trig functions, as did I with the help of the great Indian chief, SOH CAH TOA. So easy to remember.
Thanks again for sharing your time and talent.
    Chuck.

Ha! Yes this is the way I was taught trig in 9th grade as well. I had forgotten all about that until just now when I read your comment.

Just WOW. Your instructions is so easy to understand. Had my school teacher explained this way I could have had a different career altogether. Respect to you "Sir".

    Good video.
My college teachers stuffed me up on transposition and trig. They kept contradicting themselves and not explaining the maths properly so I had to learn it myself. Soooo stressful.

hi marc, i would like to add my 2c. when explaining the simplification of equations your are using a property of equations that says that if you operate the same factor to both sides of the equation the equation remains unchanged so at around 13:00 when you explain the difference when there`s a sum or a substraction you can explain saying in the case of your example 5=A+3, you choose to operate -3 to both sides of the eq (bc you are so clever :)) and it goes -3+5=A+3-3 so in fact is 5-3=A+0 or 2=A just another form of explaining i wanted to share i explain to my students (i teach at vocational school after my shop day) all the time when they have a hard time remembering the change of sign (which is an abreviated form). oh and another is SOR CAR TOA. thanks again for your help and for sharing your knowledge. regards. pete

I came out with *C=5.7735* (5.7735026919). If you're measuring in tenths, it might make a difference in tolerance stacking, etc.

I might add, that if you don't have a calculator, all the constants are listed in the Machinist's Handbook.

Mathematics of Marriage by John Gottman.
Is full of these dynamic equations.
He's a mathematician that studies organic models such as human relationships.
His most famous for the Love Lab at University of Washington Seattle area.
I'm now just starting to get an understanding of the book by watching these types of videos.

What I realised is once you have the maths down, everything regarding complex machining is simple. It's all maths and nothing more IMO.

Marc, does a Manual Machinist, (not using CNC) need Algebra and Geometry also, or can they just jump into Trig, without any real solid knowledge of Geo or Algebra? I am not a CNC guy, I cant stand it, I just love old school machining.

I got distracted for a second... When I learned this I was taught it was pronounced "Pie-thag-or-us" and "Pie-thag-or-an". Sometimes with a little less emphasis on the "Pie". Each his own I guess.

I can’t believe we went through that trig discussion and didn’t mention the easy mnemonic SOH-CAH-TOA (pronounced to rhyme with Krakatoa). It’s how we remember it in math class in the US. Yes math, singular.

Alot of kids my age in the US were taught an easy way to remember what sine, cosine, and tangent we by memorizing the initials into a “name” that sounded kinda like an Indian name (Native American Indian) “Sohcahtoa”
Did you ever teach it that way or hear of that in Canada? Your Canadian right, lol??
