Not sure if it's been said yet in the comments but the sign they pass between each member is showing what not only connects them but what each of them are individually. Mitch starts with LGBTQ+ then passes that to Scott who also is in the LGBTQ+ community, then flips it to man and passes it to Avi who flips his sign to Jewish and flips again to American, then passes that to Kevin, who flips it to black then to Christian and passes it to Kirsten who flips it to Latina then to Woman. I personally feel that this version of the song along with the signs is what this song was meant to be. I think John Lennon would have been proud of this version.

Quite possibly Avi’s greatest contribution to PTX was encouraging and instructing Kevin in his singing!!! Their FIVE part harmonies (whether with Avi or Matt) are truly special!!!
To me, this has always been a synopsis of what makes PTX great…individually they are very VERY talented, but as a group they are STUNNING!!!

  • @cinaedpv

It was Avi that worked with Kevin on his singing. It gave Kevin the confidence to sing. Even though Avi left the group, Kevin and Avi are still really good friends and Avi was there at Kevin’s wedding.

Sometimes you just have to kick back and let it wash over you. Your job can be hard when you need to keep objective to react, but the message is so powerful. I bet more that a few of us tear up while watching this. Maybe that's a part of what it means to be human.

Oh, I'm not sure it's the reacting that's tough. It's the analysis part that's hard in moments like these. Sometimes, the reaction is all that's needed and it becomes the analysis when all is said and done. Music is meant to be heard with the ears but felt with the heart. The head doesn't need to say much, when it's done right...and Pentatonix definitely pulls out all the stops here.

Imagine by Pentatonix may be one of the most important videos of this century. This group took a classic, timeless song of tolerance and peace and modernized it as only they can. They are a perfect example of what respect and love can be like. Five people with differences in race, religion, gender, and sexuality can do beautiful things when they work together. I cried when I saw and heard this the first time. I still usually tear up when they go into Wall of Sound mode.

  • @chrisbateman5358

Although not my favorite song (a version of utopia that will never realized), PTX does a fantastic job on this both visually and harmonically. I am constantly amazed how groups like PTX and Home Free are able to "remake" a song into their own... not just "cover" them. This song really showcased Avi's abilities. Truly a great version of this iconic song. And, as I always am able to say, Jen has once more analyzed the snot out of it so that I will never hear it as I did before -> now knowing all of those little nuances that she pointed out. Thanks Jen for sharing your special talents! Love it!

    • @IroAppe
      @IroAppe Рік тому

I totally get you with the utopia. However what we can do, is trying to hold that up. As it shows, if the great majority is behind the idea, then there will still be violence, but less of it, and it will also be acted upon. Little violent groups don't have much of a chance in a majority that stands against them. A functioning democracy still has its enemies, but as long as the majority stays strong, it can still serve as a safe haven. Germany is still a relatively safe haven right now, although some forces now also begin to rise here, and majorities are getting shifted. The U.S. are obviously already way past that, although they also still hang onto that thread: it's not over yet.

Yes. It may be because we WANT so much for the world to accept us for who we really are. Even the tough alphas have tender moments. The weak among us often have all the internal or moral strength. We need all our qualities. We SHOULD celebrate and accept all as necessary.

Hi Jenn! I have watched this video at least 100 times! Each time I experienced the same catharsis! I know that your channel analyzes, teaches. It explains details in a piece that are not really audible to the layman. But in this video, I see you more as a human being than as a teacher. And it's nice to see how such a trained, professional teacher can get lost in the music. To let the sounds take you to a place where there are truly no countries and where everyone can be equal. Thank you for this experience and for your work!

Jenn: "...the dynamics within the phrases....a little slide, a little diminuendo and crescendo on some notes..."
Um..... sure! All these technical details are WAY over my head but I'm glad Pentatonix knows what they're doing even if I don't :) Knowing that someone who actually KNOWS what she's talking about appreciates what they are doing merely cements my notion that they're on a whole new level of talent.

It's like they were proving a point that while each voice is stunning in its' own right and should be listened to and appreciated, it can and should very easily harmonize with the other voices around them to create a beautiful harmonious melody together. This is absolutely my favorite cover by Pentatonix. And I think you may be the only reactor who has commented on the MESSAGE they're giving with the signs passing. It's something I caught the very first time, and it affects me the same way each time I hear this beautiful cover as it did that first time. Absolutely magnificent.

Great reaction. I think their version of this song and the simple but effective message they deliver affects everyone who sees it for the first time. So glad you let the climax play thru without stopping it before going back and doing the analysis. Well done! The more videos of PTX you watch you will find that Kevin is the most underrated member of the group. He has a beautiful high tenor voice, plays cello, often times while simultaneously beatboxing which he calls “celloboxing”, plays saxophone and speaks multiple languages including Mandarin.

Awe Jen 🤗Sending you lots of love and a big Birmingham hug to you as I know there's probably a load of out-takes from this one. You're not the first and definitely won't be the last to have this reaction to the song. I remember being so shocked hearing Kevin with his range as it was one of the first times we had really see him take a full singing part in a song. A perfect song to finih the week with 🥰

Levely reaction, Jennifer ❤. Honestly, I was very touched the music moved you to tears. Because of your technical expertise your reactions are typically quite “heady”. Of course, analyses are based on using our head (analyze) but music itself (the physical vibrations) touches our hearts and your heart could not help but be moved by the chordal progressions and musical expressions Pentatonix displayed just before the end. It was nice to see your emotional side, it endeared me to you 😊❤.

You'd have to be a rock for this not to bring a tear or two. If you want to have some fun, for an upcoming "group week" you can do Superfruit (Mitch and Scott side project/goofing off). To see Scott's high end, "Defying Gravity", but also "Guy.exe" or "Frozen Medley". "Hip Hop Goes Broadway" is a good chance to comment on how Broadway-style singing differs from other genres (watch to the end for bloopers).

What a gift you are! Thank you so much for this PTX week (Monday through Thursday, I know), it was a journey I was only too happy to take with you. I will be eager to see any new Pentatonix reactions you care to post. Personally, I don’t care if you have seen the video before or not, you could do their whole catalogue and I would be there for every single one. Love the insights you offer, and love the emotions you display, from delight to tears. Peace from Ohio …

Usually I like first time reactions, but with people who have specific insights (like voice, beatbox, stage performance etc) a bit more research or a re-watch is still very fun and interesting. They still bring more to the table than a genuine "woow, that was awesome" haha

I *really* wish there were a way they could do this live, *with* the cards. That first card that they pass around is so dependent on graphic manipulation in post production that it just can't be done. For now. One of these years e-ink technology will get to this level, and when it does I expect Pentatonix to jump on board faster than you can say "Imagine."
I'm old enough to remember hearing the news reports on December 8, 1980. John Lennon, murdered. He was just 40 years old. We're just short of the 42nd anniversary of his death, and for those of us of a certain age the shock and grief are just as strong now as they were then.
I wish John could have seen what Pentatonix did with his iconic song. It would have made him proud.

I remember hearing on the radio he'd been shot. It was shattering!
Then decades later I saw on TV the protests against gun violence after the Stoneman Douglass School shooting.
In the New York protest, they caught up with Paul McCartney in the march, and asked why he joined the protest. He basically said, "My best friend died of gun violence right around the corner, you bet I'm protesting"....
And I was destroyed in tears all over again.
Pentatonix said something with this, and it's so important.

Ok, that coming-together part got to me. When it turns into that kind of chorus of vocal crescendos. Of course it’s meant to be the most emotionally-stirring section, which it definitely is. And yes, the song’s message remains timeless and important, and will always be.
P.S. Thinking about it, all of them coming together in that emotional, blended section was also very likely intended to be symbolic, as well- all the different voices and types of people, in unity and together, all becoming one.

An emotional response like this, is why I follow the reactors that I do. Anyone could do a technical reaction to a video; "words, sing, high note, low note, pictures." that's easy. When a reactor goes all in and actually appreciates when the singer tickles the clouds when they go high, or the reverse dropping into a mineshaft when they go down; that's the way its meant to be.
Jenn(or is it Jen, never thought to find out till now) a possible reason the song hit you as it did today ,PTX showed in the last bit of the video because you're 'HUMAN'; human's are and have always been an emotional species. If we weren't meant to feel how things are affecting us, we wouldn't have a heart(ok hate to break this heartwarming comment, we need a heart to do the blood pumping thing; but I hope you get my point).
    You're awesome.

I think I finally have found out why I LOVE SCOTT SOOO MUCH!! I love all of them, it’s like with my kids, you can’t pick favorites, but there that special different bond you have with one of them that the other have with her father or something.. But Scott’s way of singing with his ENTIRE BODY, the painting he does with his arms, the body language, the way he looks like he’s in pain when giving it ALL in an emotional piece…. It speaks to me on such a deep level. I know everyone have their own “favorites” based on what they like… Never have I heard a reactor say it’s Scott… So here I am, saying it… It’s Scott. All the way for me.
