Individuals will get recruited for one reason for another, there's SOMETHING about them that made the company want to take them in, whether it's their dance skills, their singing, or even just their looks. Yes, some idols are accepted in to the company straight up due to their visuals. Example; NCT's Taeyong and Lucas, both didn't really have any singing or dance skills prior to entering SM Entertainment. Taeyong auditioned by singing the national anthem while Lucas got in by doing 3 poses. BUT you would never be able to tell now based on how they perform. How? Because they trained hard and eventually developed those performance skills. That's why these individuals are called "trainees" when they enter the company. Companies take in more trainees than who they plan to debut in the end. So within the 23 NCT members, it's entirely possible there were 100+ more trainees who came and left during their time. The companies tend to hold frequent evaluations where the trainees are tested on their skills and see if they made progress. If they don't make sufficient improvements, there's always the risk of getting cut. So while yes, you can get in with a pretty face and nothing else, or great vocal skills but no dance experience; it's the ones who continue to hone their skills and improve on everything they lack on who make it to the end and debuts. Of course, there's other factors that go in to whether you get added to a group line up then just straight up talent/skills like whether you fit the concept, if you look/sound good at a group, your personality, etc. So it's essentially a competition within the company to survive to the end.

I think the way recruiters pick trainees is that they look at their appearance and 1 talent, it could be singing, rapping or dancing. They don't have to be good at all straight away because they will get trained in all anyway. So let's say you got recruited for dancing but you can't sing or rap, you will get trained in both to see which one you're better at and then get assigned a role. If you get in the company with singing but can't dance, you'll focus more on dancing and getting better at it (and ofc singing too). They only let trainees debut in groups when they are fully ready and proficient in singing/rapping and dancing.
