  • After passing her driving test last month, it was finally time to start a series where @misshubnut drives the various cars that make up the HubNut Fleet. She finds a hydropneumatic Citroen is very different to her Daihatsu Charade!

I think Carly did exceptionally well. After all, it's only a couple of weeks since she passed her test and not only is she driving a car she's not familiar with, she's driving a WEIRD car she's not familiar with!
Carly driving TWK for the win!

This is such fun to watch as it is literally a repeat driving instruction episode between myself and my daughter just after Christmas 2023. I bought her (well me really) a 1974 Citroen GS Club 1220 as she said she's bored of driving moderns and wanted a classic. Well, the experience was very much the same as Miss Hubnuts, and I thought that after the first drive she'd be so intimidated by the brakes, steering, suspension etc that she'd hate it and I can then drive it. But no, she absolutely loves it, the rorty flat four engine, the smooth ride, the handling - she adores everything about it. I must say, it is such a brilliant little car, I'm so jealous it's her daily driver and not mine.

Here in the Netherlands all drivers are insured as long as they have a valid driving licence and permission from the owner.

Different system.. in Europe we insure a car, in the UK I think they don't need to insure the cars just the drivers so it might be much cheaper if you have multiple cars or fast cars I'd guess instead of paying much higher rates when you get some fast and easy to crash car in Europe, but dunno just a guess...

Thank you for starting with the insurance coverage, its amazing how many people assume their insurance covers them to drive any other vehicle when it no longer does, especially if the vehicles are registered at the same address, Miss Hubnut looks like she enjoyed that.
    Edit-
Carley done bloomin good there, I think she could drive any of the conventional fleet without issue, she certainly has the natural ability to become an excellent driver in a very short amount of time, well done!

Never gets boring, hearing the sound of an air-cooled boxer. First struggles when driving a "new" car are perfectly normal, certainly for a new qualified driver. Miss Hubnut seems to have a talent for driving an old Citroën, so I think next up is the 2CV😄

WOW….welcome to the 1980s, Citroen style.
Firstly, well done to Mrs HubNut for taking on this challenge and getting to grips with the thing that quickly. I do remember in ye olden days during learning & immediately after passing, changing to a moderately different car was hard. And that doesn’t compare to this video.
Obviously some of the characteristics are Citroen only, but the general heavy feel to the driving, the heavy resistive gear shifter, and unforgiving clutch are things that were common back then….this really did bring back memories.
With that in mind, there are already fun videos on UA-cam showing young people trying to use a very early Macintosh…or better still, an MS-DOS PC…..I think driving modern classics especially anything very different like the Citroen, let alone vintage classics, will go the same way in another 10-20 years, especially as the powers that be rightly or wrongly are pushing the electric route. Cars such as the GSA, and even more run of the mill Ford Escorts will be totally alien to the future generation.
And I think that is very sad.
    PS
    did you mention Citroen CX…
I remember I used to see one, an estate type, regularly same spot parked, every weekend….it seemed massive at the time, I mean ridiculous long car. But I was about 14 at the time and I have discovered if you revisit places from your childhood, they seem a lot smaller now. I haven’t seen a CX in a very long time…I wonder, will one of those appear small by modern standards?

Exactly why some days I crave a SEAT Marbella CLX in bright red again. I bought one new and drove it out of the dealers in Oldham straight to Bournemouth in September in 1992. The lady I was going to see then is the same as the one who has been my wife for 29 years and mother to my two great kids. Cars hold memories - sold the Marbella to help finance a house purchase after I got a job with a car and have regretted it ever since. Maybe one last chance to revisit my youth.

That reminds me of how much time it took to get used to an older car. Designs up to the late 1980s seem to have been much more variable, and typically more work to drive. And then once an individual car had got a couple of decades on it, all sorts of little quirks and funny ways, not to mention the time it could take to just get used to the clutch. These days, you seem to just get into a car, look at the switches, and drive off. I have to say that for daily driving in a congested city, I prefer it like that, but it's good to be reminded that driving a car used to be an experience.

To go from a narrow, modern, more forgiving car to something which is wider, quirkier and very differently set up and tackle it with such aplomb as a new driver is very impressive. This video brings back memories of my first drive of a GS. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been driving, these cars are WEIRD! It took me a few runs to get used to it (and it was a C-Matic, so no clutch to contend with), but there’s something oddly completely sensical about the unusual Citroen GS and GSA set up. I learned to really love the handbrake in the middle of the dashboard, the non-self cancelling indicators and the fingertip controls. Well done Miss Hubnut for taking it all in her stride and enjoying driving such a fantastically French car!

15:10 "Lovely old Volvo truck there" - gosh I love your videos, there is so much going on all the time, however subtle and low-key ambience too. I had a GS Pallas for a few days, didn't scout her well, she was massively corroded in the back supports so she really broke down alas. But I had completely forgotten there was no power steering, surprisingly, having all the hydraulics going on all the time. When it had broken apart and cut off the hydraulics, and I had to emergency brake for some pedestrians it was no fun, until i found the awkward shuffle handle (the hand brake!) on the dashboard. Nobody under the car, so far so good! Happy Easter you two!

My first classic experience was my wife's uncles classic a 1957 Austin A40. There is no synchromesh in 1st, the steering is heavy and very imprecise and it was a real experience. A lot of fun. Looks like things in the 80s were a bit easier but nowhere near as straightforward as today. There's actually a big difference between my 2020 golf and our other car a 2012 mini cooper S. Although a mini is set up to be involving and the golf to be easy.

Very impressed- I first drove a GSA back in the 1980's, and although it was extremely quirky, relative to other 1980s cars it wasn't such a culture shock as other 1980s smaller cars also didn't have power steering, and were generally more differentiated from each other than nowadays. Miss Hubnut did very well, considering lack of experience in driving generally, but in a much more demanding older vehicle.

I'm not sure whether this is an unusual punishment or a very good idea 😂. Much more involved.
    Well done 👏

Well done Carly. It's one of the bigger challenges as a driver, swapping between cars that differ in size and engine/gearbox characteristics. Some Continental driving one day...
I think I might be a bit odd... I've always cancelled indicators myself never wishing to rely on self-cancelling.
    Anybody else do the same?

Well done Carly. You where amazing, specially as a new driver. I think if it had been me, I'd have shoved Ian's camera where the sun doesn't shine. He's got one in a million in you 👍

You did a grand job there Carly, it's a totally different driving experience and you did fantastic you should be proud of your self, and Ian don't throw Carly into the deep end with TWK not just yet you said it your self she is terrifying car to drive.

Miss hubnut really got used to the clutch quick. 2 stalls and then every other attempt to set off faultless. Excellent drive.
