    As a german:
    It pisses me off. I have UA-cam set to English and follow german, as well as english creators. What happens now is, that german creators are getting translated to this horrible AI voice and english creators to German.
    There is no global setting for the viewer to stop this at all. It would need to be changed manually for every video affected. It's an issue for almost a year (if you google about it) and UA-cam gives two flying fricks about it.

      yea, YT really can't deal with people speaking multiple languages.. I live in Germany and have my browser set to accept both en_US and de_DE, but the browser and OS are installed in their English version. So I get a wild mix of German and English in video titles, auto-dubs and all that crap.

      A lot of things ignore the "language" setting and instead use the "location" setting. If you set your location to the UK (for example), the UA-cam logo should change to "UA-cam 🇬🇧" and everything should default to English. But, of course, then it might start trying to translate German videos into English.
      You might also want to check that you've listed both German and English in the "accept languages" list in your browser, as some websites might check that instead.

    • @blockbertus
      @blockbertus 24 дні тому +3

      @@RFC3514 Thanks for the tipps. I've already done the accepted language thing up and down. And changing the location to something english will also not really help (as you already have pointed out). The only solution is that either UA-cam stopps this completely or gives us a setting to toggle auto-translate completely off (title, description, audio...).

      The search option is also totally broken. It auto translates video titles.
      The result is that it's impossible to search in your own language. Which is terrible when you have have to look for very specific things.😢

    One thing I've found out, as a non-English speaking user you have to add English as a second language to your youtube/google account, that seems to at least make the video default to the original audio track. But it does not stop youtube from translating video titles.
    I reviewed parts of the German audio track and it seems mostly accurate, speed and cadence are horrible, some technical terms are just wrong and sometimes it makes no sense at all. Need more Aussie slang to test how it handles that.
    Maybe I'm unreasonable about this, I can see it might be useful for some. I just can't help but feel kind of insulted when I've spent decades honing my English skills, and then some algorithm keeps shoving this low-effort crap in my face.

    In Portuguese, they dubbed your voice as a teenager girl, Dave! hahaha
    The translation in Portuguese is actually reasonable, you can understand most of it, but it makes mistakes in some specific items, like "clamp" is translated as "grampo" (staple), which is unusual, but not wrong.
    For me, the dubbing didn't activate automatically, but the titles of his videos are all in Portuguese. (I've tried to opt-out of these translations but it didn't work).
    The worst part is the sound quality, it seems kind of muffled with a constant background noise and the speech pacing is very inconsistent. Elevenlabs can generate much better text-to-speech.

    This has been here for months and makes watching non-English channels frustrating because you keep having to reset the language as UA-cam just makes an assumption you can only speak one language. The AI voices are absolutely atrocious. I can't believe they even released this - they clearly didn't bother consulting native speakers
    ... And yes, it seems the AI voices try to match the tone of the speaker - some female voices are deep enough to be voiced by male AI voices. It's absolutely awful.
    One important thing to note is that this is not a professional translation - your words can be misconstrued.

    I might be based in germany, but that doesn´t mean i can´t speak other languages aswell.
    It seems like those features haven´t been enabled for everyone at the same time.
    I just recently noticed this on a few videos.
    I´ve been following english content on youtube for idk maybe 8 years and never had the need for an AI generated voice over.
    It greatly improved my english skills far more than what the primary and secondary school could offer.
    Now instead of me having some fun time, while also polishing my english skills, they shove this AI BS into everyone´s arse.
    It´s absolutely mind blowing how every giant tech company tries to push AI as hard as possible, while literally NOBODY has asked for it and clearly doesn´t want that half baked, barely working trash anyways.
    You can do lots of great things with AI, but I´ll decide when and where I need it.
    I highly appreciate your efforts into pointing it out, i hope google will overthink their poor decisions.

    Also, what is this sleep timer. But this one currently has only the single audio track. Stable volume comes if you have a wide dynamic audio range, because for some reason YT thinks all audio needs to be compressed to the limit, like every channel is a hard rock radio channel, and needs to be sitting at 100% modulation all the time, even with silence between paragraphs.
    Wonder how many translations are available, might try the Dutch one, and see if the AI can translate, though you will find technical speak is very hard, as the terms used change between languages, and you can get the hilarious one like there being no difference between soldering and welding, and other such fails.

    Austrian here: I think the German dub is surprisingly accurate. The tone and pacing is awful. It sounds like someone on QVC trying to sell stuff, but the translation is more accurate than I would've thought. It even got the technical terms correct, e.g. it translates "analogue ground" to the electrical term "analoge Masse" instead of the literal translation "analoger Boden" (which would be "analogue floor"). However, weirdly enough, it always uses the formal "Sie" instead of the informal "du" when addressing the viewer. Seems super strange for a UA-cam video.
    I think the feature may actually be useful as a language learning feature. But in classic UA-cam fashion it needs to be explained better to both creators and viewers. Unlike the subtitles, the dubbing on your video isn't marked as generated anywhere. On many channels that might be fine, but on EEVblog even a small translation error could make a big difference and might even be dangerous to viewers.
    The dubbing hasn't been enabled by default for me, but I've got both German and English set as languages to my Google account, that might make a difference. However, my TV is set to the default German and on there the title of the video is auto-translated to German. The translation is again surprisingly accurate but not literal (it even added an extra "TIPP:" at the start, but after "EEVblog 1655 - " and kept the all-caps parts). That feature is just annoying and I've found no way to turn it off, without changing the language of my entire TV.
    I'm also pretty sure (at least some) creators can manually add dubs for other languages, because the German dub for Mark Rober sounds flawless. It sounds basically like he's voicing it himself. No weird formal forms, no weird intonations, essentially perfect. Mark Rober's videos also have dubs in a lot more languages, so I doubt they are generated by UA-cam.
    I'd say, even if the auto dubbing might be incredibly useful to some users, keep it off for now. Until UA-cam gives multilingual users better controls it is too annoying. And as long as the dubs are not marked as auto-generated and therefore potentially erroneous, it might even be dangerous for some of your content (unless someone manually reviews all dubs before release).

    I'm a native German, and yes, it doesn't sound great and has mistakes. However, for (young) people still learning English, this is a fantastic feature. I would have loved to have had this 10 years ago when I was learning English and Electronics. People can simply watch the videos twice and learn about both.

    • @p_mouse8676
      @p_mouse8676 24 дні тому

      I disagree, with subtitles in your native language, you learn foreign languages much quicker. In that case you hear the word (incl accent), see the context and see the translated word. That ticks almost all boxes for learning a new language.
      It's quite obvious that in countries where they don't use dubbing, the standard of English is also much higher.
      At least from the point of understanding, since people actually hear it more often.

    • @zahlex
      @zahlex 24 дні тому

      @@p_mouse8676 True, but since the primary focus here is to learn about electronics, that is irrelevant. In the scenario I tried to describe, the alternative is not watching the video with subtitles. People who don't understand enough English yet would just not watch the video at all. Like me 10 years ago.
      You need to understand most the words to take anything from such a video. Very different than a random Hollywood movie. That means you need to pause and look up words regularly and invest a lot of brain capacity in reading the subtitles. Nobody does that and both isn't necessary if the voice is translated. Given that the translation is of decent quality.

    Stable Volume I had for quite some time now - and it is really good, because you don't get your ears blown away by un-normalized videos.
    But the AI Voice is so annoying. Didn't had it for this video, but I follow a German channel (I'm German) and it gets auto translated (and auto selected) to English.
    Why do companies nowadays introduce a feature and only them think about a switch to enable/disable it - from the user side?!

    But i know why it's beeing used and why youtube maybe will rollout for everyone: It sounds like NatGeo or Discovery Channel!! From english speaking countries you have the original audio track in theses channels, but we got it with a very strange dubbing that have a signature very similar to the youtube translation.
    It may bump some views for some people, mainly people who is brain rotting on TV depending on the content, but it is very strange.

The video titles are autotranslated to english but the audio is still in his native language. I don't know what language it is and i can't understand a word he is saying. But im still subscribed anyway because he shows useful circuits with the schematics. I just wish there was an option for English subtitles or dubbed audio.

    Audio leveling and ambient lighting aren't new (I've had those for over a year I think). The audio dubbing seems to be new (they were translating video titles only before, (which can't be disabled!)) and it's at least as bad as your experiment from a while back, with the added "bonus" of making you female.

    I don't see an option for turning automatic dubbing on or off on my channel though. Maybe it's for monetized channels only - mine is not.

    I HATE those automatic translations. UA-cam does that also with video names. It is good for those who need it, but automatically change video name or put new voice track? just no, no non nooooo!!! Luckily Finnish is not even experimental in this dubbing thing. UA-cam should let people choose if they want video name translated or video dubbed. Default should be just as video creator did make the video, anything extra or change, default off.

    Those AI voices sound bad, and as they rely on those broken automatically generated closed captions they are often wrong to begin with. I’ve noticed this on several other mostly technical and science channels which makes this that much more awful because those autocaptions are especially bad there. Even more annoying is those pesky auto translated video titles. Which in German most of the time are about 40% longer and then being cut off in the middle because now they are too long for the crappy UI in the UA-cam app.
