@@3D_Blu-ray_Bunker lol! I saw it when I was younger and enjoyed it. Then I watched all the reviews mostly about white-washing, and I never saw it that way because I knew it was a fantasy movie in a made-up universe with Egyptian inspired monsters. But I didn't remember it was in 3D, I have just over 100 3D movies and I'm starting to have a tough time choosing which one I wanna watch again for the night, so it was time to buy a few from Amazon. And you convinced me that the 3D was a lot of fun, and that's what I'm here for!

Thank you for taking the time to review this forgotten masterpiece. An intetesting 3D double bill is Gods of Egypt and Exodus: Gods and Kings which drew similar criticism for it's casting of white actors in Egyptian roles but was shot in native 3D. I enjoyed Gods of Egypt over the Ridley Scott film due to the fact it didn't take itself too seriously. Black Widow has now been ordered and I'm waiting impatiently for it to drop through my letterbox. My money has been taken and I believe it's out today or tomorrow in Japan.

Forgotten masterpiece, heh heh! It's funny, but I think this movie has a lot in common with (David Lynch's) Dune: Critics hated it, it's got a bad script, bad acting, good and bad special effects, oh, and a white cast. And people absolutely bloody love it. Including me. I've only seen Exodus once, a few years ago, but I remember finding it not much fun, need to give it a re-watch. Old Ridley's not really the man he used to be, and I've approached his films with extreme caution ever since that godawful A Good Year with Russ Le Roq. Hope your BW arrives soon; I don't think they've taken my money yet, so I'll keep an eye on that.

Thanks for the channel! Love it! My Z9D is always starved for more 3D!
The thing that DRIVE ME CRAZY about the criticisms of this movie - is I don't believe many of the critics actuallt SAW the movie. It is VERY CLEAR in the film that this doesn't take place on Earth!! This is a flat planet called Egypt! (We see a shot of Ra pulling the sun on chain over the flat planet).

Maybe they could have distanced themselves from some of the criticisms if they'd just put the tiniest of twists on the title, like spelling it, "Gods of Egipt" instead. Usually when the mass consensus is to hate a film I get where it's coming from but, with this one, it baffled me. Anyway, always good to se there's another fan of it out there, thanks for watching!

Hi Christian, very kind of you. I mean, temper your expectations and keep in mind just how much almost everyone hated it..! At the very least though, I hope you enjoy its 3D as much as I did, it's not up there with the very best post-conversions but, to my eyes anyway, it all looked like it was so well set up and shot to work well in 3D. Maybe if I'd watched it flat first time I'd have been less enthusiastic about the film itself, not sure, but the only copy I'll get rid of is my 4K disc of it. Thanks again, take care mate.

Nice review! When you mentioned that the film was far from gimmicky I wondered if you have any examples of films with "good" gimmicky 3D? Jaws 3 is sure gimmicky but it's not very good. But maybe there are better examples? I imagine there should be more gimmicky 3D in children's films and comedies.

I think you're right, kid's animations maybe can get away with it more - like, everyone loves old Sammy the Turtle popping a long way out of the screen. It's difficult, and everyone's going to have their own opinion but, for me, when it's something thrust towards the camera just for the sake of a 3D pop-out it can be a bit gimmicky, but stuff emerging from the screen in a natural way (say, the floaty seed things in Avatar), then that's not gimmicky? I think maybe the biggest curse of 3D down through the decades is that it's seen as something for kids and idiots, and those egregious pop-out shots haven't really helped its cause. (Not saying I don't enjoy them though. Then again, I am a bit of a kid. And an idiot.)

This film is an excellent Ripping Yarn, very much made in the style of Luc Besson (Fifth Element, Valerian). I only bought this as a 3D collector, but I’m glad that I did as I loved the sumptuous sets and pretty good 3D.

    • @3D_Blu-ray_Bunker

I'm the same. In fact, it was only after it had been out for maybe a year, sometime in 2017 I just thought, what the hell, and started hoovering up pretty much every 3D movie no matter how bad I'd heard they were. I used to be a "native-only" snob - i.e. idiot, so I would automatically buy all of those, but it was the supposedly poor post-conversions that I eventually went all-in on. And, once in a while, what I think of as a real treat came along, this one being maybe my favourite of them.

Weak movie, kinda fine to watch once, but to be fair, the fantasy-aspect IS good, interesting, and yes, entertaining, to a certain degree, and even though I haven't watched it in 3D, I do believe it's "better" to watch in 3D.
Maybe, if you're into fantasy specificly, maybe you're a D&D kinda person, then this could have a better use for you as if you're just a movie-person.
Personaly I'm all of that, I'm into movies, I'm also into 3D, though not everything is worthy to have/watch in 3D, and I'm into fantasy. So objectively speaking, maybe I should give this a 2nd chance, in 3D, if it's cheap... 🤔

I like a good sword and sandle epic now and then. More so if both me and the film don't take themselves too seriously at the time.
I didn't bother when the Ben Hur remake, which also had a great many negative things said about it, unsurprisingly so given the height of the pedestal upon which the original sits. But I probably would have had the 3D version been released as it should have been. Hopefully the Australian (I think) company that managed to get Jumanji: The Next Level out on 3D Blu Ray can get more unreleased 3D films out.

I'm sure it took a big hit because of the casting complaints (although, people will say it took a hit because they thought it was garbage...). If was was a serious historical piece, then I'm all on board with authentic casting, even if that could be an incredibly complex issue: Would for example the Egyptian Rami Malek be ethnically correct to play an *ancient* Egyptian..? I think it was fine for him to play the Indian Freddie Mercury (was it?), but it's such a minefield these days, someone's going to complain whatever you do.

Expectations were occasionally subverted, I think.

In fairness, I'm pretty sure that one of the reasons I enjoyed it as much as I did was because, not so much that my expectations had been set so low, but because by the time I caught up with it the movie was such an underdog that I wanted to bring as much positivity to watching it as I could. And, as it progressed, I increasingly thought that I didn't need to dig deep to enjoy it at all, but instead simply realised that (in my opinion, of course) all of its harshest critics were simply wrong. This video was about seventeen minutes long when I first put it together, so I cut out a two or three minute bit where I compared the film to Jason and the Argonauts and Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, both films that everyone loves (me definitely included) but which, really, have weak scripts, simple stories, not great acting and (and this was another reason I cut it out as I thought people might want to lynch me) I know just the one fella did that incredible work with the animation ...but it didn't exactly look brilliant. I mean, I think Ray's effects were completely awesome, perfect for the films, but I wouldn't call them realistic. Thanks for watching, cheers.

@@3D_Blu-ray_Bunker well one reason the acting seems bad is that most of the voices of the lead actors were dubbed. As for effects, King Kong wowed audiences with its "realism" in the 30s and Harryhausen took it further...the high bar for decades. Ive seen kids gasp at the entry of the cyclops in Sinbad! To see the difference, compare animation in Sinbad to Jack the Giant Killer. I'd even postulate that the artificially works to enhance that feel of the creatures seeming more magical, as one might imagine in a fairytale world. Oh to have seen some of those converted to 3d.

@@Joe-hh8gd I one hundred percent agree, effects like that which are clearly not real-looking but look somehow off, can actually look *better* than the same thing done with CG photo-realism. Better not as in more realistic but, as you say, more magical. I take exactly that same logic to apply to the entirety of cinema itself in the 24 FPS world vs High Frame Rate, where 24 makes it look less banal than reality and therefore more magical. And I'm not saying that Gods of Egypt's weaker CG worked in the same way Ray Harryhausen's "unrealistic" models did, but just that simply because an effect shot might be unrealistic, or not perfectly realised, doesn't mean that it won't work well in the context of the film. I think I explained that thought process better in the bit that I cut out!

Alex Proyas, man. Dark City is so, so, so good it hurts (I saw it in '98 before I had seen Metropolis)...and Gods of Egypt is just, yeah, so-so. Alex took a swing for the fences with this one, and of course I own this in 3D, but the casting was so off and the CGI so cheap that I couldn't get lost in the movie. Every few minutes your suspension of disbelief snaps.
I guess, in that sense, watching this was like watching Shia LaBeouf in Indiana Jones. You are trying to enjoy a cheesy movie, for what it's worth, and every time he's on screen it's so glaringly awful that you are shaken out of the magic and start to resent the movie for not pumping the brakes and admitting "this isn't working. We need more money for better CGI, we need to recast, or we need to rewrite and give Indiana Jones *the daughter* he was *supposed* to have...not give him Shia LaBeouf."

Ha ha, poor old Shia! I honestly don't have those issues with this film, I like the casting (colour issues notwithstanding) and don't really mind the crappier CG (which, to my eyes, is only really bad with the metallic creature transformations and at other times is - dare I day it? - actually quite good). I guess it's certainly not the type of film people thought Proyas would end up making when they watched Dark City two decades earlier but i do hope he had fun making it.

@@3D_Blu-ray_Bunker My copy of Black Widow 3D departed Japan on Wednesday and was delivered to my home in Maryland (6,958 miles away) on Friday afternoon. Amazing.
It arrived the day after my new 3D projector (ViewSonic) also arrived in the mail.
In fact, it arrived hours after I learned that the new James Bond movie (my #1 film franchise of all time...BTTF is my favorite trilogy...so they can both be #1)..."No Time To Die" will be given a 3D theatrical release.
Yesterday was a good day 🥲 and the Japanese Black Widow 3D Blu-ray was an answer to unspoken prayer. It's a good movie and after *your* videos have given me a new way to study/appreciate 3D, I recognize shots and angles that must have had 3D in mind.

I've read that here in the UK it won't be - but don't quote me on that, it's entirely possible that I actually misread it... Hope your ViewSonic is beaming up some nice images - and lots of lovely 3D to enjoy in Black Widow!

Nah mate, I have a pretty high tolerance for “bad” movies, and I have enjoyed quite a few movies that critics told us wer rubbish, revelry watched Jupiter Ascending and Mortal Engines, both of which got a panning, but I enjoyed them both. A decent 3D presentation has also got me quite happily through plenty of other dodgy movies like Ghostbusters 2016 or RIPD. I even really like most of Proyas’ previous movies, especially Dark City, which I think is pretty much a masterpiece, and this had a great cast, big budget, and even a good concept. This one however, I think is a real gold plated turd, just couldn’t finish it even in 3D. When I saw you reviewed this I thought “wow, this guy is really prepared to take one for the team”, but then you only went and liked it. That’s a twist ending I didn’t see coming!

Ha ha, gold plated turds are presumably what the gods in this film would squat down and force out! It's weird, I'd say my film tastes are generally aligned with the majority when it comes to what's good and bad, but there's always the odd exception I guess. Sharknado was the one I took for the team!
