You offer a great service to your viewers with videos like this. There are many folks who can't afford to spend $500 to $1000 dollars for a brand new, high end bushcraft/survival system. It's good to have someone who reaches so many people, to share the common sense approach. Thanks brother and keep up the good work.
I have said it before and I know I will keep on saying it, thank you Dave for your generosity in making and sharing these videos, I am learning so much from you and passing it on to all my family. Kindest regards Dean
The leather 7-inch Ka-Bar sheath (under $10 on Amazon) fits the Old Hickory 7-inch butcher knife perfectly -- stitched and riveted, with a tie-down hole at the bottom. My two vintage OHs stay in even when turned upside down and shaken.
If you have the patience, catering auctions will get you a bargain on knives, steel pots and maybe even Dutch pots. Restaurants are one of the most common businesses to go belly up so there's always lots to bid on.
Another comman man series...these are by far my favorites because anybody can put a decent kit together using your ideas, and recommendations without spending a fortune. Looking forward to the rest of the series dave...thanks!
Thank you for constantly looking out for the "common man" and doing these types of videos, it shows how truly dedicated you are to sharing information with us and not just to promote your store/site. That just shows what an awesome guy you are. Keep up the great work, thank you for all the videos. :)
Yes Sir!!!! This series has got me excited! This just might end up being my favorite set of videos ever!!!! I can't thank you enough for sharing the wisdom,Brother!!!!
These videos are brilliant, this has been my personal one stop shop on everything I need, I have personally with this mans guidance set up a sustainable kit. This man two thousand years ago could have created a city. Well done Dave I really like these videos on bulletproof kit.
Just ordered the Old Hickory Butcher Knife...looks like a awesome blade for the price. Going to order the unmarked KaBar leather sheath to go with it. Thanks Dave and for the person in the comments that said the KaBar sheath will work with that blade. Absolutely loved this vid. 👍
Great video. America is extremely cheap. A pocket knife like that in Australia you'd be looking at over $50, similar with those axes. Pretty much anything you guys have triples in price when it hits Australian shores.
Love all your videos Dave. I would add that for saws I carry a small hand saw that our local gardeners use on a daily basis. I bought one and granted it was 27 dollars but level of sharpness is amazing and they actually do last very well. The sharpness reduces the amount of energy needed and they weigh basically nothing and yet tough. The maker is Barnel and i've used it repeatedly and works very well if your energy is low. I just wanted to throw that in. Works great in desert regions.
Another great vid Dave. Back in the 90s I was a leader in the scout troop that my son later became an eagle in. I taught alot of the things you teach to the scouts and their parents for about 10 years. I've since then retired but miss it. It's in your blood ya know. I have watched all your vids at least once so keep up the great work brother !
Excellent video, looking forward to new ones. Being from Bosnia shoestring budget is all I have, so seeing a well known expert talking about it is very helpful. Thank you very much for all the things you show us for FREE, you simply can not beat that.
In 3 hrs im leaving for a 3 day bush survival camp in the mts...about to start packing my truck just wanted to watch a few vids with Dave....HIS videos are the very first thing i look for everyday on utube.!
Really excited about this new series your discount series is what got me thinking that yes I can do it can't wait for the next one thanks for all your hard work
Dave, my dad got one of those Old Hickory butcher knives at a soup kitchen he volunteers at about a year ago. Really old - beautiful patina on it. I made him a leather sheath for it and he absolutely loves that knife. I have to admit, it is a great knife and the blade design on his is very useful.
I have a 20 year old Old Hickory butcher knife that I 3D printed a good set of handles for that is my go-to knife for camping and hunting. You can hone those things on your boot and shave with them. Great advice.
Keep on keeping on! I'm constantly amazed at how knowledge - able you guys are. Thankfully prolific too, because I really enjoy your videos. So drop em like they're hot.
I love these videos. they really show us all what you can do with your money with things you may already have (pliers & saw etc). many times companys use backpacking/bushcraft as a marketing tool to get you to buy their product and mark up the price when you already have the common sense tool in your garage.
Yet, another great lesson. Thanks for all your efforts in teaching the masses, Dave! You are selfless in your quest to helping all of us get back to basics. Your videos should be required watching in schools everywhere. If more young people were to learn how to be more self sufficient in a survival situation, he/she may in turn be more apt in solving other life problems, as well.
I am partial to my Corona professional folding pruning saws, they are very similar to your Laplander folding saws that you have mentioned before. They come in 7" and 9" blades, have red handles, and I have climbed trees with one for years. They are extremely sharp, have red handles, and run around $15.
All I can add, is the single edged axe, you also have a hammer. As for a saw, and thanks for talking about that. A small Drywall saw, very handy. Also Stanley, who makes tools, at one time made a small folding saw, that used sawzall blades, that you change out with a screwdriver. And you can carry extra blades in the handle, but only up to the six inch blades I think. As for a knife, I have the Condor Hudson Bay knife.
I remember that video about the old Germany multi-tool for .25cents. You were very excited to find that. I can't blame you either, that was one heck of a deal! Great series coming up, I can tell were going to learn something!
Would you still suggest carrying the handle for the bow saw? I've seen a few of your newer videos where you show how to make buck saws that are really sturdy. Just want to know which way you would go now.
Another great video. I have also personally been intensively researching and testing the absolute best quality gear that you can get on a budget. I love everything you display in this first video, but if you live in an area where you can't frequent flea markets, gun shows, and garage sales, you can still get high quality gear cheap, even with shipping costs. I can't say enough about Morakniv, they just work, and the ones with the plastic handles and 3/4 tang are damned tough!!!
Dave, I'm watching these videos to develop a budget kit that is small and one I can carry to Africa. I'm going to Liberia to train their army. I was wondering if you could do a video about a small kit and include your travel experiences as well as customs encounters if any and recommendations for a tropical environment.
Hey, Dave. Great video. You are right in saying that some "bomb proof" items are more expensive and require a little discipline to save for them. Lesser items will do in the meantime, as you know. Thanks for showing the way to self-reliance without either relying on "cheap" stuff, or breaking the bank for pride's sake without getting anything more reliable.
I like how Dave shops flea markets for things in which all of us should do.I have found many items for cheap as well as at Goodwill thrift shops.I have got things from Wool jackets to packs, knives etc at thrift stores for cheap. Some good points guys, doesnt need to be brand new. ;)
This is going to be a great set of videos. I like the bow saw, and will add one to my pack. I still carry a survival saw, that looks like a chain saw with two handles, but this will add perfect to that. The bow saw will be better for exact work.
I like common man kit the best. Taking something and making it better makes me feel like its mine, not just store bought. I have purchased a ton of gear over the years and most of my favorite items are refurbished, old and crusty looking. Reminds me of my Grandfather, feels like home.

It would be really cool to see a video on the process of finding an axe head and how you refurbish it and fit it to a new handle.
I have said it before and I know I will keep on saying it, thank you Dave for your generosity in making and sharing these videos, I am learning so much from you and passing it on to all my family. Kindest regards Dean

Smart man.
Smart man/cheapskate it's a fine line!!
1095 high carbon steel full tang knife for 11 bucks ? wtf ?
Kabar sheaths fit the 7 inch hickory butchers as well

I love when I watch your videos and I see a suggestion I sent you being implemented. Makes me feel all special and fuzzy inside, lol.
Great info! I'm looking forward to this series.
Bought one of those Old Hickory butcher knives for a dollar :) Got the paring knife for free. Made each a leather sheath. Total cost $14.
Nice to see you getting back to your roots Mr Canterbury.
Another great vid Dave. Back in the 90s I was a leader in the scout troop that my son later became an eagle in. Great info I'm looking forward to this series.
Loved the first series looking forward to your updated approach to it and the camp cooking one, sounds like some great vids coming up dude.
Out of all the videos I see on these subjects Dave, you always have the most bulletproof ideas. My survival pack is tool heavy.
Great Video Dave, thanx for all you do brother!!

Brilliant video Dave!
-Cheers!
glad to see the plain ole bow saw straight from the hardware store, one of the most under rated tools in all of bushcrafting.
Keep on keeping on! I'm constantly amazed at how knowledge - able you guys are. Thankfully prolific too, because I really enjoy your videos. So drop em like they're hot.
Outstanding, as always looking forward to more videos!
