In response to non-tactical applications of ATAK, ATAK/Meshtastic interests me from a family perspective. Four kids, wife and I. Could be a valuable way of keeping track of everybody in something as innocent as the local fair, or short-range comms during a power loss from an ice storm, which we've had before.
I would like to throw out there that in the meshtastic settings for ATAK you should use the second to fastest data setting and to make it more COMSEC friendly using CLIENT MUTE and not broadcast to or from MQTT and setting the GPS ping location only when requested or turn on GPS location sharing when you're making a final push. I ALSO WISH SOMEBODY WOULD DO A VIDEO ON SIDELOADING ALL THE ATAK PLUG-INS AND ATAK ITSELF for those of us that have sanitized devices. I appreciate the work you guys do.
I'd like to see a test of the body worn antenna on something like a ready rig vs a plate carrier with different types of plates (Ceramic vs steel vs hybrid) The thought being the plates acting like a ground plane and not attenuating the signal like our water filled sacks of a body. 😂
Thanks for the information. Am very "old school" and have noticed that "voice over the air" HAM radio has almost been replaced by digital data signals on the local HAM nets. When can find OTA voice nets hear folks bragging about using the Internet to connect without using a radio🧐.
Regarding your comment about the Chinese radios - THEY are listening to the users - meaning they are adding features that the big 3 Japanese makers are not! Its disappointing that Yaesu and Icom don't add an actual TNC to their flagship HT's, but Kenwood does. There are also apps that allow you to connect to your HT from your phone to program the radio. The next big thing to drop in HT space will be SSB transmit. Licensed amateurs have been asking for this in an HT for a long time - but they don't listen! I can't wait for the Chinese to come out with one first AND for less!
@@HamRadioCrashCourse The closest we have to SSB in a handheld package is the IC-705. With the fact that that SDR's are becoming common place, it's only a matter of time that we see it as an offering by someone - but it won't be from Japan. I don't have any knowledge of what may be released - I only know that in other videos that have been posted on YT that it was mentioned that the Chinese manufacture of the specific radio that was being reviewed, wanted to hear what features their users wanted - and lots of folks commented in the video that they wanted SSB offered in an HT. The mere fact that they were asking what we wanted shows they are listening.
Wore a body whip antenna (aka cat tail) for a while in Afghanistan. Was noticeably worse compared to our regular whips folded up on the 152. It was good for intra-squad communications but would really struggle to go any further. In current testing on a baofeng uv5r the body whip has outperformed a Baofeng SRH805S (stubby antenna) which has been a big disappointment.
What about a Bluetooth interface for the radio. Not just for programming or just a Bluetooth PTT but channel display, VFO etc. Much like how the MPU5 is controlled via an EUD
I still dont care for twink Lucas, Issac but i enjoy learning off Josh for everything Ham radio. At least i dont wear skinny jeans, wearing plad pretending with an AR 😂
Botkins are 2a powerhouses. Isaac testified on our behalf in Oregon and helped us get an injunction again a very, very bad bill. His tech knowledge and ability to teach it are much appreciated. Yes, I'm a fan boy.. .but it was earned.. Note...thought this was on Josh's channel (half asleep) but keeping it for peeps that don't know of him.
Loved this crossover of two of my favorite channels! I recently passed my Technician license with the help of @HamRadioCrashCourse videos.
