The January Coup of 1966 should not be referred to as a positive move in any way, if there is anything revolutionary about it at all, or an honorable coup, then politicians from the eastern regions would have been killed as well, name one from the region that was touched., no equity, no fairness, if one goes down, then everyone should have gone down, it is simple. Half bake truth! i only see a man who is trying to appeal and attract the patronage of a set of people, not objective from my own point of view. My take is that: The 1966 January coup was a total terrible occurence to have happened, it should not have happened at all, it culminated into the national problem, the players of the coup also were too brutal and sectional in carrying out their operations. The second coup of July was even worse, well lets say it stopped in the killing of the officers of the eastern origin, i would have said it was vengeful, and perharp fair enough, however when they took it further by killing the civilians of the eastern origin, it is totally bad and unacceptable, then leading to the Biafran war-----It is a no no, it is still an injustice towards the Igbos till date. However, we have to call a spade a spade, the problem started with the January 1966 coup, and the officers who played out the coup objectives were unfair and sectional.

You are not being entirely truthful; go and read why we struck by “Adewale Ademoyega” he is a Yoruba man that fought on the Igbo side; he was one of the planners of the 1966 coup; he was the first to state that it wasn’t an Igbo coup. Do you even know that the man that quelled the coup was also an Igbo man, “Aguiyi Ironsi” what some of you that blame Ojukwu for defending is people don’t know is that Ojukwu never supported the coup; Also Nzeogwu and his co-coup planners though they fought on the side of Biafra, never liked Ojukwu. They only fought along him because he released them from prison when the war started. So whatever the man is saying is based on tangible fact

From gowon to muritala to obasanjo to yaradua to danjuma to buhari to babangida to abacha. Presidency was their compensation, but their history will be that of infamy. Oga Peter Faruna Salifu, sir, as an Igala man, you are not a Northerner. All Igalas are situated below the conference of Rivers Niger and Benue and that conference itself is in the south of Nigeria. Go and check the British Jetty at Idah and see what it was called. British called the place Southern Nigeria. Sir, Abuja is the geographical centre of Nigeria and thus any location below Abuja as far from Abuja as Igala land of Itobe which is across the Niger-Benue river are already in the south-central of Nigeria. Hence, sir, you and all Igalas are from Southern Nigeria not North. British lied to your generation that you are Northerners but how about now that you are educated and can use the Four Cardinal Points with Abuja as the locus to tell exactly on which side the Igalas lie on Nigeria map geographically. Some Igbo communities denied their identity because Igbos were killed in those communities and not because of a single individual. The same can be said about Asaba people that came out to welcome Nigerian soldiers out of fear but were killed. However, this is no longer an excuse today because nobody will kill you because you're Igbo. Anioma people have embraced their Igbo identity. So some Ikwere people that keep on denying their Igbo identity and playing politics with it have no excuse again.

It was Britain and the USSR that won the war for Nigeria, not these Nigerian officers claiming credit for the victory.
It is said that while rookie generals talk strategy, veteran generals know that it is logistics that win wars. If Britain had given the logistics to Biafra rather than Nigeria, of course Biafra would have won the war in 6 months.

While it's true that Dubai has achieved remarkable development, the claim that it was "poor" is not entirely accurate. Dubai, even before the discovery of oil, was a trading hub with strategic wealth. What set Dubai apart was its visionary leadership, which used oil revenue wisely to diversify its economy into sectors like tourism, aviation, and real estate. Unlike Nigeria, which faced political instability, corruption, and over-reliance on oil, Dubai’s leadership focused on long-term goals and maintained unity within its emirates. Nigeria, with its vast resources, faces divisions and systemic challenges that hinder the proper management of its wealth. Dubai’s success wasn’t just about oil-it was about a unified vision and effective governance.

@@josephchikelu this is a topic I'm very much familiar with...the expression of the Warrant Officer above is strictly his own and he is entitled to it,but I'm not one to those to be manipulated by the sentiment of just one man who to the best of my knowledge was just like any other recruit ( messenger/pond) on the battle field.
If you know how the military works, you will know that 80 percent of what this WO 2 is saying is centred on what he perceived or what he was told.
little did you know that A non commissioned soldier like this one doesn't have access to classified information,it is just like a cleaner in the hospital set-up talking about the work of a nurse or a medical doctor.
I repeat, there is no way you will talk about the counter coup code-named REMATCH, that you won't talk about the senseless killing by Emmanuel Ifeajuna and others.
The WO 2 erroneously said the coup was plotted by Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeugwu.
Nzeugwu was brought into the picture very late just like major Gideon Okar of the 1990 coup against Babangida was brought into the picture very late.
Infact, major Kaduna wasn't supposed to be a part of them in the first place,a lot of people talk about him because of the way he executed his part of the coup in the north.
The so-called revolution was formed on the basis of lies and deceit. Try and watch interviews of some of the participants that survived.
A revolution that marked general Ademulegun, colonel Ralph Shodeinde, general Zakari Mai Malari, colonel James pam, colonel Kur Mohammed, colonel Abogo Largema for death but spared Lt col Odumegwu ojukwu, general ironsi and others is a derailed one.
People are always quick to say that Colonel Unegbe was killed too,but unlike others,he wasn't in the original list of people to be killed,he was only unlucky for being too close to general Mai Malari .
A revolution that was supposed to wipe out all the political class but spared anything coming from the region of the plotters, that is not a revolution, that is ethnic cleansing, that is greed, that is evil. The same so-called revolutionarists leaked the plan to Nnamdi Azikiwe prior to D-Day, Nnamdi Azikiwe suddenly decided to travel out of the country to avoid being killed like others, for the same journey that ordinarily should have come months ahead.
Why wasn't Ahmadu Bello or Akintola pre-informed like Azikiwe? What kind of revolutionarists do selective killing in an atmosphere where everyone is considered corrupt? Tafawa Balawa till date is considered the most upright amongst politicians, why was he killed? What type of revolution target upright people for death?Who is fooling who?
Again,to say Awolowo was to become the prime minister afterwards is to play into the hands of the coup plotters.
Firstly, Awolowo was not mentioned in their coup speech. A coup purportedly plotted to make Awo the president, that topic should have been number one in the coup speech.
Secondly, Awolowo was in prison when the coup happened, funny enough,he was imprisoned in the east where the coup wasn't executed, what stops them from freeing him as part of their plan?
Thirdly, the rumour and news that the coup was to make Awolowo the prime minister only came up after the coup had failed,in other words,it was an afterthought meant to save the face of the plotters.
In countries where a coup is plotted to enthrone someone, the motive is usually clearly stated in the coup process, Jerry John Rawlings of Ghana was a very good example,he was like the major reason for the coup and his freedom was number one in their agenda.their intentions weren't made known after the coup,it was known during the execution of the coup.
Let no one deceive you, that coup was carried out on the basis of greed, overzealousness, desperation for power and position...it was never a revolution.
