    People think "traditional" art is only for rich people but you often can comission amazing art that doesn't even cost that much more than a tattoo

    I used to think tattoos were too permanent for me until a switch flipped and I realized that my body isn’t permanent so might as well make it pretty. 😅

    I don't have any tattoos (yet) but I always thought it was so weird that people that are anti-tattoo because "it is such a permanent choice" are more than happy to get married or have children on a whim because of a "feeling that it's right." I mean...... Great video!

    It is also really interesting when you think about the role that tattoos have had in Indigenous cultures - being done primarily by women who were master seamstresses. There is a major connection between stitching clothing with a needle and physical ornamenting of tattoos - also with a needle.

    I have several tattoos, most of which are sacred tattoos that I had done in ceremony which I think helps with the "you'll regret it when you're older".
    But the main way I reconcile the idea that I might not like them as much in the future is that my body accumulates marks whether I want it to or not, it's got scars and stretch marks and blemishes and freckles that have appeared as I get older and have lived in my body. At the very least tattoos are marks that I chose to put on my body instead of ending up there through wear or accident.

      Thats a beautiful Sentiment. I have a few Tattoos and i ended Up semi "regretting" one of them. I say regretting in Air quotes because i simply dont Like the Design too much. I dont actually regret it. Sth that changed since i was 18 in how i See Tattoos is that i dont actually See them as this big eternal Thing any more. Sure, you can Always Accept them as a Marker of a point in your Life. But If you really cant stand them anymore
      ... You can Change them. You can Cover them Up fairly often. Worst Case scenario - you can use laser removal. When i was growing Up, noone ever really talked about those options. And while they are all expensive and ideally Not necessary... They are there
      Ironically my stance towards ageing Tattoos hasnt changed since my mum tried to scared me with ye old "they will Look Bad when youre old". Well.... I will also Look Bad when im old. So why should my tattoo somehow be untouched by time. If i shrivel Up, who will care what that Bit of colour in my skin Looks like? 😂
      Also: Tattoos on older Ladies Look badass imho

    One thing i adore about my tattoos is that they are made with my (changing) body in mind. Like, when you get a tattoo, thinking about placement, changing tissue and all these things is a given ... basically, the "fit" of your tattoo! And i honestly think this mindset helped me to change my standard (i guess?) for my clothes - clothes should be made to fit bodies, not "bodies made to fit clothes"

    Such an AMAZING insight about tattoos!!! It’s not that you have this divine understanding of your future self, but you have cultivated the emotional stability to handle feelings of regret is they arise, and a compassion for your past self. So brilliant

    I love tattoos because of their permanence. Im so tired of having to cut or color my hair as often as I have to. Choose an outfit every day. Doing all these things every single day just to take care of my body. At least tattoos stay there for a long enough time.

    I really enjoyed this thought experiment! I have a few tattoos, but my favorite (and largest and priciest) is the sculpture Medusa by Harriet Goodhue Hosmer (1854). The story of Medusa really resonates with me- an R survivor blamed for her assault by the ones in power who neglected to protect her. In her suffering she finds solace in her sisters and power in her curse. The sculpture, Hosmer, was queer and a badass feminist. She never hid who she was (she brought her gf to Italy with her) and became respected in Rome for her art. Eventually she had a team of two dozen men assisting under her. Read up on her whenever you need a pick me up

      So cool 🩵 and all the love and support from another survivor xx

    Curating a museum on my body?? Yes that’s exactly what I’m going for. I genuinely appreciate the work going into creating my tattoos especially because I have been collaborating with my artist for over 6 years. It’s even more enriching as an artist to work with another artist to create your own look. I know the skills of tattooing are not ones I’d easily pick up so I appreciate someone so willing to work to build my look with me

    When I think about decisions I make that I wish I could change, my regrets in life, I think about people I've hurt, relationships that have ended, hard irreversible decisions that have opened some doors but permanently closed others. I don't think about the fact that I have an image of a bird on my arm that I don't particularly care for and isn't to my taste any more.

    9:30 This is something I think about a lot. If we were all buying clothes locally and not taking advantage of garment workers in less developed economies, if we paid prices which made sense in our local economies...we would have clothes that reflected our cultures and our climates, and the people who are being underpaid to make the clothes we are wearing could make clothes for their locality and uphold the fashion of their cultures

  • @loisbirchall820
    @loisbirchall820 2 місяці тому +17

    Another thing to think about is that clothing is part art, part necessary, whereas tattoos are purely just art. I think this makes a difference in what people are willing to spend, because you need clothes to function, so it is easier to justify not paying for the labour involved.

    I do not have a tattoo but I knit a lot of my clothes. I understand what you mean the cost of the yarn and time slows the decision making and makes it more like art… even if the design is very simple.

      Knitting/knitwear was where my thoughts went during this too. One thing Leena mentioned was “wouldn’t it be so interesting to see what the world looked like if the clothing designers also MADE the clothes”, and I only realised relatively recently (within the last couple of years) that the well-known knitwear designers I would look up to, DON’T MAKE THE CLOTHES 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 I couldn’t believe it! I don’t know what it was about it, but I always assumed they had a few knitting machines and would make the garments themselves in small batches, reflected in their coats. But no - they outsource their making. And I was FLABBERGASTED 😅

    There's something similar in what you're saying to the abstraction within food supply as well - the more we remove ourselves from the origin, the process, the labor force, etc., the easier it is for many people to take those things for granted. I would imagine if I paid someone to sew a dress for me, I would keep that dress for a very long time if not forever - the experience of witnessing and participating in its creation makes it valuable in a different way than something from a shop.

    Hi Leena! Lush vid. I have tattoo of a hand holding a dandelion on my shoulder because when I was little I thought it was so mean that people didn't like dandelions and called them weeds, I thought they were so beautiful and I loved so much that they would be everywhere. As a 19 year old i thought that was a cool edgy thing that I could get a tattoo of a weed to make this statement about beauty. And that's what I love about it, it says something about me as a child and it says something about me at 19, I probably wouldn't get it now but no way would I get rid of it because it reminds me of a past self. I think that ties in with what you were saying about permanence and regret. I also have a ring of small wild mushrooms going around my bicep, this one I just love so much, even though I've had it for a few years now I think it represents the current me, I wonder what future me's opinion on it will be?!

    I’ve been decorating my house (privilege I’m aware of) and I’ve been so terrified of picking the wrong thing I haven’t picked anything. This was super helpful to accept that later my self will be able to handle that and change it. It was quite freeing. Hopefully I’ll be able to enjoy the process more now. Thanks Leena.
    I also loved your comparison to fast fashion but I do think it stands for all art and handicrafts. People are more willing to pay £500 for a tattoo than they would be for a piece of traditional art such as a painting that took an artist hours. Or on a hand crafted vase etc. interesting thoughts. I think you are right that fewer people would buy fast fashion if they could meet those making it. It’s easy to know it happens and distance yourself from it because you need a new outfit for an event and you’re broke.

    Some great thoughts. Never thought of it as a "skin gallery". 😄
    I have a hexagon on the inside of my left forearm and it's the cross section of a 20 sided die, which I use for my biggest hobby of table top RPGs. But it's so geometric and simple that it doesn't shout NERD. It was my first and "trial" tattoo. Now that I know how it feels and how I handle the pain I will most likely add some real bad ass geometric angular designs to either the entire left arm or my back. I really see it as an accessory now. It expands my outfits. 🥰
    I also recently commissioned some proper DnD artwork from an artist with my DnD friends. For the people who can afford it, this is a pretty common thing in this community. We payed about 700£ to have a poster of our favourite characters made. ♥️🥰

    I like the idea of trusting yourself to have enough emotional capacity to deal with regret if it comes in the future. I came a similar way from being terrified of putting something on my skin that is gonna stay there for the rest of my life. I realised that yeah, it is going to be there, but so is the rest of my body with all its imperfections. I accept these imperfections, I like my body as it is and so I realised that even if I like my tattoo less in the future, I will have no problem with living with this imperfection. And chances are it will only bring more joy!

    What an interesting take on tattoos and our relationship with them. I only have 5 and one of them is the leaves from Heartstopper. I got them right after the pandemic because that comic was one of the things that kept me sane in 2020 and it doesn’t matter I wasn’t the “target audience”. I look at it now and smile remembering how those characters warmed my heart during such difficult times.

    What you‘re saying about your relationship with regret really rings true to me. My tattoos are a part of my body‘s history just like my scars and there will always be parts of my body I might not like and still be ok with.
    I feel like my gender transition has opened up these conversations and thoughts a lot and I also see my tattoo journey as a part of my transition - embedded in an overall process of being okay with my decisions and also taking my wishes to change my body in a certain way seriously and trust myself to make decisions about it.

    Besides that, while watching - or honestly only by seeing the title of your video - I had to think about another video by you, where you said, you like transparent tops, because you can see your tattoos through them. Yesterday, I wore one (from Lucy & Yak; you really have/had quite the influence on me ^^) and immediately had to think of you and this video, because I thought/felt the same! This is something I've been thinking about for a while now, as someone who turned 42 and decided that I was OVER middle age and could finally just do whatever I want with my body because actually I pretty much have the same style as when I was a teenager so I'm not likely to suddenly hate my tattoos. I've got seven, three of which are pretty large and I absolutely love them. As I've got to 48 I've changed shape (as we inevitably do) but my tattoos look amazing and as someone who hasn't always loved their reflection I love looking at them in the mirror and as a result I love myself, and looking at myself much more. All my tattoos are by fantastic artists who I really enjoyed spending time with. I'm like a walking art gallery!💕👍 I think tattoos can be immensely empowering and I totally agree with the comparison with fast fashion. I have always shopped second hand and handmade as much as I can for ethical reasons but also to be as unique as possible and my tattoos are all unique. Thanks for another fab video and I love your new tattoo! 🤩

    I really enjoyed this conversation! My friend and flatmate is a tattooist and while I agree with your sentiment tattooing has become highly commercialised and in my experience many who do flash they don’t love because it sells, owners of shops can act as a painful middle man etc. it’s not like that for all artists but it is for some.
    My other thought while watching this was I studied design at university and we had all kinds of design at our campus including fashion design. Since then I’ve always had it in my head that once I get a place financially where it’s viable that I want to keep an eye on the graduates coming out of my uni and try commission ones who have a style that aligns with mine to get my clothes made. In my head that sort of aligns with the things you were talking about how we consume tattoos, and also means I can support up and coming alumni in that stressful time upon graduating from the university ecosystem that gives them space to practice their craft, as it tends to be a lot harder to do once you leave

    I always wanted to have tattoos, like I vividly remember asking my parents when I was 12. Of course I wasn't allowed to back then and then life happened - university, depression, low-paid jobs - I either couldn't decide what I wanted or didn't have the money. So I got my first tattoo at 31, it was a big custom piece, sort of done on a whim because I messaged the artist while in a good mood and then didn't want to back out of it. I LOVE IT. It's amazing and people always compliment me on it. I got three more pieces since then, two were done by friends who are starting out as tattoo artists, I kind of just wanted to support them in building their career. And then my latest piece I got while on an island vacation. Artistically it's really bad and I'll probably get it touched up by a better artist at some point or even covered up completely. But it's a memory and I laugh about it. It's a full embodiment of "what does your tattoo mean? - I had money and no one stopped me"

    For me I've always loved tattoos and I have a few small-ish ones. I got my first one right when I was 18 yo and I've never regretted any of them. I have a swallow on my left wrist and even though it's in a very visible place, I often times forget its excistence completely. They all have part of my skin and I love that. Even if they one day were something I didn't really love as a design (doubt it but anyways, entertaining the thought) they are so integrally me now that I wouldn't ever remove them or cover them. They each are important and meaningful but even if they were there just for art, they become so part of you that I find it hard to think I'd ever regret one. (Obviously others may didagree and I understand some tattoos like badly done ones or linked to painful memories like ex-partners etc etc. That's a different story and not mine.)

    I have four tattoos. One is an anatomical heart, which was a symbol I valued a lot while dealing with depression. It was the raw and real but also beautiful and complicated aspect of how life truly is.
    I also have two mountain ranges (one of each foot) from pictures I took, one in North America and one in Europe. I am both British and American, so I always felt like I had one foot in each continent but was never fully either. I also feel so serene when on a mountain so I always want to feel like I was on top of one.
    Lastly, I got a mirror with a skeleton inside reaching out to touch hands where the glass is. Mirrors have been used as a way to see through to the other side or the future in many belief systems. It was a way to have a memorial piece for multiple people who have passed and a way to keep them with me always.

    I’ve always thought of my tattoos as unique works of art that I carry with me wherever I go. No regrets for any of them because I was very deliberate when in choosing them and placing them and they all have spiritual significance.

    i’ve been doing online content creation as an illustrator for a few years and started to look into, learn about and train in tattooing in the last few months and i totally relate to your sentiments around tattooing and sustainablilty/ethics! as an artist, i was completely enamoured by the first person connection that comes with tattooing as it’s something i miss so much with content creation. like to share that human moment of trust and creation was so exciting to me and something i definitely want to partake in. i thing it’s a beautiful form of art and it’s so human which i love!

    I love tattoos! I have just one piece, got it done in 2019. It’s a collection of mostly purple flowers on my upper arm, they are the flowers from Ophelia’s last scene in Shakespeare’s play of Hamlet. I even got two violets, one wilted as per the play (Ophelia says “I would give you some violets, but they withered all when my father died”) and one open because violets are a sapphic/queer symbol and that relates to my queer identity formation. Hamlet was one of my special interests at school and in my young adulthood. This tattoo pays homage to honouring myself and my passions, in particular theatre, and flowers felt more me than say the Yorick’s skull (more iconic of Hamlet perhaps). So far no regrets, and I always get compliments on it. I really enjoyed the experience of it, and the artist I chose specifically because her style is what I liked. My parents both really discouraged the decision, and my sister got a second piercing in solidarity 😂

    Watching this with a fresh tattoo on my arm that I got on Saturday! My 9th tattoo! I love hearing your thoughts about what you're going to think about your tattoos when your older. I completely agree. I can't wait to see what my tattoos are going to look like when my skin is all wrinkly! I was concerned I would regret them, but now when I look in the mirror they're just a part of me for better or for worse and like no matter what I think about them they'll still be there.
    The only thing I've said to myself is to not get any tattoos based on famous people, music art or books. When I was 18 I wanted to get a heap of Harry Potter tattoos, and I definitely would be regretting those right now.
    Love your new tattoo! Can't wait to see what it looks like when you get more shading!

I had been long thinking about getting a tattoo, but kept wondering about the 'what if I end up not liking it' and never ended up committing to getting one. You offered a perspective I hadn't considered before: my future me is going to be wiser than the me as of now. thank you for this video and your thoughts. it has come at such an interesting time in my life. I'm rebuilding my trust in myself, went on my first solo solo trip last month after being inspired by yours many years ago. i used to be so much more confident in myself, my memory, but after my ADHD diagnosis, and a bunch of unfortunate work places, skill regression hit and suddenly I'm having to figure out who i am and show myself that i can make decisions that my future self will not hate and/or regret, even if this is choosing a place for dinner or getting a tattoo. all this to say that I've wanted a tattoo for over a decade and keep chickening out on it because I keep thinking my always changing interests and passions will mean i regret it some time in the future. (plus I've been moving around a lot after graduting from uni about a decade ago and i never decorate properly or buy all the things i want because i feel like I'm going to move anyway.) so everything you talked about in this video really hit home. thank you for the comfort and for giving me a lot to think about.

    My tattoos are travel memories. I started when I was 19 (now about to turn 36). I've traveled a bit too much now to get one for each trip, so I only got one for the main big trips I've made and the countries I lived in. I like your take on tattoos & fashion. My tattoos go even further than that: on top of being a style/artistic choice, they are also a part of my personal history. Their meaning and the place they are from aren't obvious to other people unless I tell them the story that goes with it, so they also create a kind of secret map on my body. I just freakin' love it. I haven't gotten a new tattoo in a while now, kind of gives me the itch a bit ^^

    Very interesting idea/comparison. I'm trying to go more minimalist and buy pre-loved items. And I have tattoes. For me I get them more because I just have a feeling they should be there. Once I envision a tattoo design somewhere on my body and I get that "this is right" feeling, it feels weird not having them. Haven't realized many of my tattoo ideas due to lack of finances but it's 100p something I'll invest in in the future

    I have a handful of smaller tattoos that are mostly song lyrics, but a couple years ago, I went in for a big one. I got an anatomical heart surrounded by lilacs on my shoulder to kind of represent my childhood (because I have a heart condition, and had the best lilac tree outside my bedroom). But I also just reached out to the same artist again to add more to my arm because I've decided I want a half sleeve.

    I actually hate that tipping culture has entered tattooing here 😅 I’d rather be charged more off the bat than be considered rude for not knowing what the latest expectation is. I also find tips in general so outdated, it feels almost belittling to be like cosplaying as rich handing over some extra money?? I don’t know if that wording makes sense

    • @mery_vc
      @mery_vc 2 місяці тому +1

      As someone coming from Spain where tipping is not really common or if we tip is very little, I've always felt strange tipping. I dont understand the point of doing so or where it comes from but maybe someone can explain it for us😅

    • @thatjillgirl
      @thatjillgirl 2 місяці тому +1

      @@mery_vc I mean, the way it's *supposed* to work is for tips to function as a fun little reward if you are extra grateful for the service rendered because you feel the person truly went above and beyond. But most often, the way I see it actually functioning is like it does in America (where I'm from), where it's so built into the culture that it's an expected portion of the income, and if you don't tip certain professions, you're basically underpaying the worker. Or else there's the way it works in some countries, where it functions more as a bribe so you can get better service or higher priority or whatever.

    "It's not that I have this grand vision for what my personal style is going to be in my 40s or my 50s. It's more that I am starting to trust I have the emotional capacity to be able to handle it if I do regret it. And like, the grace to understand my younger self as I get older." ❤ The whole video spoke to my heart in a very unique and unexpected way. I am in the process of booking a tattoo for a specific part of my body that has changed so much over the years, I'd never thought I would want a tattoo there, and yet. I am bursting with love for this choice right now, I hope my future self will remember this feeling much more than I hope my tattoo will still look great ❤
