    Andy makes a great point there, its not about h2h but the ability to stay victorious throughout the whole career and tournament. Nadal have been beating Federer even when in his teens but was stuck at no.2 for the longest time simply because he couldn't effectively reach the finals to face Federer. Nadal had a naturally stronger game than Federer but is not consistently able to beat players of all styles and games.
    Federer had a more effective game to defeat many different types of players thus consistently reaching the finals. Even when he is weaker in h2h against Nadal he still have a some wins over him, goes to show how Federer is able to modify and change his games according to his opponent. Nadal quickly became no.1 and win slams on different surface when he was able to do the same.

      and don't forget his dealings with dodgy Dr Fuentes, for his sudden surge on grass- note that he's been poor on grass again, as in his early career, since 2011, didn't win a grass match for 2 prime years from 2012-2014.

      Some people tend to think Novak and Rafa are better players than Roger due to the h2h’s but they are wrong. Realistically the odds are stacked against Roger the most in the big 3 because he is the oldest and his favourite surface (grass) only lasts for a month. Rafa has the advantage of his favourite surface lasting 3 and a half months. That is the only reason he leads the h2h with Roger. Roger doesn’t have a specific factor which helps him yet he’s still beaten Rafa 6/7 times they last played. Novak has by far the biggest advantage though because he is the youngest and only had to face injured Rafa on clay instead of prime Rafa (unlike Roger). So he really was expected to get ahead in the h2h’s, especially as he’s played them way more than they used to play him when they were in their prime

    Roger Federer didn't freaking ruin Andy Roddick's career. What an absolute stupid thing to say. Roddick had a great career, a grand slam winner and Wimbledon finalist on three occasions. He came up against a great player, who many players couldn't compete against, not just Roddick

    • @connorlance-queen4833
      @connorlance-queen4833 9 років тому +8

      ***** I think it would be more. Federer also took him out in several other Grand Slams semi-finals. On the AO, i think it was 4 or 5 times. Aside from Rafael Nadal, no one could compete with Federer from 2004 to 2008-2009. I am also a huge Roddick's fan. The dude to me is a wimbledon champion, at least in my book he is.

    • @connorlance-queen4833
      @connorlance-queen4833 9 років тому +2

      I am aware of that. My point is that it's not about how good you are against one person, but, how solid and great are your results overall. If you look in numbers, semis, finals, ranking history, Roddick is way better than both of them. Also, Roddick also defeated Federer 3 times. He just played Federer way more because he reached way more finals and semi-finals and kept a better ranking for longer.

    • @connorlance-queen4833
      @connorlance-queen4833 9 років тому +1

      About that i kinda disagree. You are the best of the time you are playing. The courts became slower, not only in the past 10 years, in the past 20 years they had been changing. The technology of the raquets improved as well. The returners got more and more advantages against the servers, the baseliners against the volley playing types,the long rallys against the amazing one-two-tree shots. Roddick was a great example of the old tennis school that today doesn't win big tournements anymore. It's not his fault, it's just how it is. If he had born in the 90s he would had been one of the greatest of all times, and, well, djokovic and murray probally wouldn't had won even one slam, the same for Nadal because with a 90s raquet he couldn't produce that much Top Spin and the courts were way faster. It's all about timing.

    • @connorlance-queen4833
      @connorlance-queen4833 9 років тому

      He would had won at least 3 or 4 more if Federer wasn't there. I don't think he would had lost in Wimbledom 2003 (semi), 2004 and 2005 (final) if it wasn't for federer. He lost to him in 4 or 5 semi-finals in the Australian Open and the 2006 US open Final. His confidence would had been very different. I don't know, i think that Federer broke his path more than any other.

    • @connorlance-queen4833
      @connorlance-queen4833 9 років тому

      I agree, but results don't lie. He was number 2 throw 2004 and until nadal appeared. He was number 3 for a long time. It's all about timing i guess.

    Nice to hear that Roddick appreciated Federer's reserved demeanor in the locker room after their 2009 Wimbledon epic. Obviously we as fans didn't get to see that.
    I remember, having watched that match, feeling uncomfortable seeing Federer stride out to receive the trophy in that silly looking cream suit with "15" embroidered in gold, in front of Roddick. That didn't seem classy to me. Ah well, nobody's perfect.

      Casual fans have a very skewed view of the Nadal Federer rivalry. Many of them fail to realize the stylistically terrible match up for Federer, as well as the fact that they've met so few times on grass and indoor hard (where Federer dominates) and so many times on clay and outdoor hard (where Nadal dominates). To top it all off, Nadal is 5 years younger than Federer, and most of their matches had the age in Nadal's favor. If not for the ridiculous amount of times they met on clay and the few meetings they've had on grass, Nadal would still be ahead of him in head to head, but it wouldn't be nearly this lopsided. If they were the same age, it would be almost even- and that's taking into account Nadal's stylistic advantage over Federer. All in all, it's pretty clear that prime Roger Federer was a generally superior player to prime Nadal. The same goes for Djokovic. I'm a huge Nadal fan, but I have to admit, Nadal is one of the most overrated players there is. His positive H2H record against Djokovic meant nothing in the early days, when Djokovic wasn't a top level player and Nadal was, so Nadal kept getting wins off of him. Since 2011, Djokovic has been destroying Nadal, but people still flaunt Nadal's positive record against Djokovic, which was built on beating an incomplete Djokovic who wasn't even close to the level of Fed and Nadal at the time.

    • @vinaye20
      @vinaye20 8 років тому +2

      +Gerop i absolutely agree with you... on clay and outdoor hard... the court helps nadal get much more bounce then on grass and indoor hard and he has used that effectively on those surfaces against federer particularly to federers backhand... nadal doesnt have anywhere near the amount of natural talent as the likes of roger... but he is one of the more gritty fighters and that is the main reason for his success... but if the 2 had played more on grass or indoor hard the balance of power would have been shifted considerably in federers favor..

But that is important if you look at H2H! Roger is ALWAYS there: Nadal is frequently away for a month, two, or more! Besides, there is the double record, with the #1 for Federer. longest weeks at #1 than any player, and within that, longets, week-by-week #1! amazing! then, The Masters Cup titles,playing against top players! My argument is that having the most athleticism =/= being the best athlete. Being the best at your sport is all about results (being dominant), so being the best athlete you is about results. We can compare the greateset athletes by their athleticism, but then you get the argument that you're having with everyone else here ("He has more endurance!" "Yea, but he's more explosive!"). Every sport requires different kinds of athleticism. If you consider golf a sport, then Woods is one of the best.

      Davydenko 6 Nadal 5, Davydenko 2 Federer 19. Nadal's h2h success v Federer is largely due to Federer being a better, more consistent all round player and Nadal not turning up when form and surface don't suit him; not good enough to play Federer a lot of the time, never mind beat him.

      Ferdous Alam You can't use Dustin' s H2H to undermine Rafas H2H dominance over Federer because it's only two matches .Everyone knows if Dustin played Nadal 20 times Nadal would win most of them.Federer lost against a guy ranked 145 this year.That 0-1 H2H against Federer means nothing.But if Federer lost to that guy 11/17 matches then that is significant.So Rafas H2H dominance over Federer is significant because it involved 35 matches.If you were able to defeat your friend 60% of the time that you played would you think that you weren't as good as him because he could beat a lot of guys that you've lost to? Of course not.Every time you would face your friend you'd be confident that you could beat him cause you were the better player.Its the same with Nadal.When Nadal had to face Federer did he see Federer as the better player because Federer had more success against the rest of the field? No.Because of his H2H dominance he always saw himself as the better player.

    Interesting take on Rafa Fed here. About the time this was made, Fed finally got Rafas number. The last time Rafa beat Fed off the clay was … *2014*. Fed is unbeaten grass-hard since then in a dozen matches with Rafa. A couple of them were beat downs.

      Not at this time he didn't, not until 2017 and that was for one year only. After that it was 1-1. About the time this video was made in 2013 Rafa beat Fed 5 times in a row, until 2014 AO. Fed had Rafa's number late on with 5 wins in a row but Rafa had Fed's number long before that when he beat Fed 5 times in a row on 3 different occasions much earlier in their careers.

      Nah still not better than Roger. 12 times they played on clay from 2005-2010 when Rafa was unbeatable. Roger leads the h2h on all other surfaces. Roger doesn’t have a specific factor which helps him yet he’s still beaten Rafa 6/7 times they last played. Novak has by far the biggest advantage though because he is the youngest and only had to face injured Rafa on clay instead of prime Rafa (unlike Roger). So he really was expected to get ahead in the h2h’s, especially as he’s played them way more than they used to play him when they were in their prime. He played prime Roger 19 times but played Roger in his 30’s 27 times. And Roger had the higher win percentage in his prime years

    • @PicklePilot
      @PicklePilot 4 роки тому +12

      Jimnosnow 4 Roger v Rafa isn’t even a consideration. Roger hands down a better player than Rafa. Don’t care about their h2h for the points you’ve given. I think the true goat comp is between Nole and Roger. Nole has had to play his entire career against the other members of the big 4. I looked it up, he’s played only a couple finals against people not named Fed/Nadal/Murray. He only has one major victory against someone outside the big 4. Fed I think won 13 of his against other than the big 4 (of course he basically created the current era). Point is, Djokovic didn’t have the luxury of playing “lesser” opponents in major finals and yet he is only 4 behind Fed. His game translates well to all surfaces unlike Nadal, but like Fed. I think it’s between Fed and Djok and only time will tell. Roger is definitely it for now, but barring injury Djokovic has a chance to rewrite the story.

    • @jimnosnow4484
      @jimnosnow4484 4 роки тому +3

      Pilotgolfer 84, Fair enough but it mostly evens out because the competition Novak faced in Roger and Rafa was not as impressive as it sounds. They weren’t the players they had been in their prime when Novak peaked in their prime. So Novak’s 3-0 in Wimbledon finals against Roger sounds impressive but it wasn’t like he was facing Roger from 2003-2009

    The H2H with Rafa: We all know Rafa is the GOAT of clay, no question, Rafa can play an entire clay season and not lose a single match, it's insane. But we also know that Roger is the GOAT of grass no doubt; and people have pointed out that most of Roger's losses to Rafa were on clay and if that were instead on grass it would be different. *But now consider this. Roger has played Rafa on clay 10 times or more I believe. HOW DO YOU REACH THE POINT THAT YOU GET TO PLAY RAFA ON CLAY if you are at Fed's ranking??? YOU HAVE TO REACH THE FINAL ON CLAY!!! So why is it that Roger has reached so many clay finals??? Has Rafa reached as many finals on grass? So it is arguable to say that Roger has done better against the field on clay than Rafa has done on grass against the field. This adds to Roger's legacy IMO.* I am still so sad that Roger couldn't take one of those many Roland Garros finals against Rafa, the era was epic, and to reach so many RG finals is amazing, and to not earn one against Rafa is a shame. I think Rafa hurt Roger's confidence. Without Rafa there, I think Roger has maybe 25 or more GS.
