if consuming one too many dragon hearts turns us into a magma wyrm, at least we can finally ask our significant others the ultimate question: would you still love me if i turned into a wyrm?
Theodorix really stood out when I learned he was once a troll. Lore-wise, it really stood out how tragic taking dragon communion was. He was certainly one of the tougher fights for sure. Gameplay, on the other hand, I just keep killing and eating, and, oh look, cool eyes.
So, personally. I view the process of turning into a magma wyrm as a curse. The heart still beats even after the dragon is slayed so perhaps upon eating the heart through the dragons blood it is able to curse those who seek its power. Thus dooming them to hunger for more hearts until eventually they become a dragon. This might also explain why Eleonora joined mohg. Having power over blood perhaps mohg was able to somewhat break Eleanora's curse while allowing her to keep the power. Perhaps the two powers cancel each other out. Which would explain eleanora's normal eyes. Ultimately this could mean Eleonora was in full control of herself and was actively trying to defeat mohg from within. Actions speak much louder then words. So Eleanora was forced to kill yura to keep her cover perhaps.

After the DLC I have a theory that the reason why people turn into wyrms is because you need a dragon priestess to help you with the communion basically like how a maiden helps you turn your ruins into strength but a dragon priestess helps you go through communion without any side effects aka the insatiable hunger and becoming a wyrm or at least you need the blessings they give you think about it there aren't any dragon priestesses in the lands between nor a mention of one being there but there is one in the realm of shadows and there isn't a single wyrm there

Just wanted to say I've been watching here since the elden ring lore videoes started! It's been such a great time being able to learn so much lore about the game through this channel. Thanks for all he videos you've made!
Spoiler from the DLC: We learn from the DLC that the dragon communion was sponsored and endorsed by Placidusax and his brood (ancient dragons) who were enemies of the Bayle and his “drakes” (modern dragons). This raises some retrospective questions. Why are corpses of ancient dragons present by the communion alters in the land between? Why are the drake knights *cursed* to become Magma Wyrms as a punishment? There might be some other, but I can’t think of more personally.
I wonder what would happen to a Magma Wyrm that continuously partook in dragon communion. Maybe they would eventually ascend into Ancient Dragons. Or another type of Dragon?
@@square-table-gaming There are the Rune bears. They are noted by Zullie to be turning into Dragons by growing their own Gravel hearts(which pierces their chests) and gaining draconic slits in their eyes. There's also the trailer for the DLC showing a Bear roar incantation. How would a large troll, or even a freaking bear, partake in communion at these altars? Maybe the bears simply eat the gravel of Ancient Dragon instead of hearts of lesser ones. And as such, their transformation isn't cursed? If that could be the case, then a Magma Wyrm could feed the same way and ascend.
@@NorthWolf97 These mutations are not the same as dragon communion, communion is a ritualistic eating of the dragon heart that takes place at the altar to gain literal incantations. The trolls were intelligent enough to pray at an altar, the bears are mutating from eating the hearts, but their strength is different as they aren't gaining literal incantations.
The dlc lets you turn into a humanoid ancient dragon using a stone heart, possibly saving the tarnished from becoming a wyrm, given how the ancient dragon priestess is sane and doesn'tattackthe player, the ancient dragon man is also implied to be very old, being described as an "arbiter", with him not having turned into a wyrm despite being that old, he and eleanora have only two dragon communion incantations though so that might be the reason they're not wyrms, though it might be because both either have a humanoid ancient dragon form or mohg blood, both of which the tarnished can attain through questlines
I like dragon communion very much as concept In my first playthrough I rolleplayed as dragon hunter driven mad(yellow flame) and realising the ruination they would bring by slaying all dragons and using a needle to seal their hunger and flames I'd love a dragon communion ending maybe we could become the dragon god by killing the disappeared dragon god before subcoming to the hunger that can't be stilled now that all dragons are wiped out
Lol my first tarnished was a samurai and i went straight for thr moonveil... Thrn started killing dragons for communion... never realizing i was following in the footsteps of that magma wyrm... .thats crazy But i really wanted those eyes!!!
A minor note: apparently the original Japanese doesn't describe Dragon Communion as a curse or punishment so much as it is simply dangerous. That's why Theodorix is described as a hero and why Makar is guarding the entrance to the Altus Plateau, despite the implication that they would be aligned with the Golden Order in that case: because they didn't sin. They took a huge risk and paid the price, but the Golden Order doesn't necessarily view them as immoral.
I agree, I doubt they would see them as immoral if they were using one to guard the way to the Altus Plateau. I think in the English translation the term curse is being used a bit differently from how we're used to seeing it in Elden Ring. I see "curse" as less literal and more of a "tragic fate."
