Thanks Pastor Skip. The simplest way to find out what God is like is to look at Jesus - for Jesus was God clothed in human flesh. In John 1:14 we read, "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us..." The role model for Christianity is Christ. It staggers the mind that the Creator of the universe took on human flesh and walked on the earth 2000 years ago. But we would expect God to do such a fantastic thing to reveal Himself to us in crossing the infinite gulf between uncreated and created to accomplish His work of redemption. Regarding Absolom's unfortunate "three stooges" encounter with the oak tree while riding the mule, I think we see again God's providence at work! Regarding your brother, I'm reminded of the words of Jesus to Martha, the brother of Lazarus in John 11:23, "Your brother will rise again." We have a living hope in the One who has conquered death. God bless.
I enjoyed the initial allusion to Charles Francis Adams, one of the very few Americans who could say that both his father and grandfather were U.S. Presidents (Jenna & Barbara also get a nod); and then the heartfelt reference to family differences that go on too far. Where I felt Skip fell short: in a book about the greatest King of Israel, the pastor could not remember and then butchered, to the point of it being an insult, the name of one of the bravest men of our time - President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who shares the same ethnicity and all the good traits of King David. He is fighting a Goliath and deserves a bit more respect if referenced. When US intelligence predicted Zelenskyy would flee, Zelensky stayed in Kyiv. [“Ya tut,” moment broadcast on a phone - meaning I am here]. He is fighting the good fight against tyranny. Saying, "Vladim-or," (11:50 mark) it is just totally wrong and is even an unintentional but insulting Russification.
It could have genuinely been a senior or brain fog moment. it was an unfortunate moment to have one. I have those moments where even my brain knows what it wants to say, but my tongue is not cooperating. Pastor Skip is a very eloquent speaker, but he does have moments, most of which are subtle. So in grace, I feel he should have the benefit of any doubt; he may have felt quite embarrassed about it.
