      I will figure out your podcast. I do have a question. I enjoy my feather girls and your videos. I'm not quite 6 months into my chicken mama experience. I have a broody girl, I'm small Oregon town, so no roosters fertilizing eggs. We are two weeks into broody. If I order her fertilized eggs from somewhere, will she be able to hatch them out, or will she pull out of being broody in a couple of weeks? I did my research before choosing each breed. I got two that must've been mixed up in the wrong brooder at the feed store. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

      @@KimberlyGingrich it really depends. She may stay on them if she feels them developing or she may give up. I would have a backup plan just in case. Remember you will get roosters if you have her hatch eggs. You could try putting some sexed baby chicks under her, though!

    My two new baby chicks (Tangerine and Olive) are really small and are with their mom in an enclosure inside the run where the flock can see them but not harm them. Their mother is very high in the pecking order, so I hope that when they are big enough she will help them hide from the older hens and the tiny Silkie rooster who is their father. Thank you for all your videos Dahlia ❤!

    I have a funny story! I was free-ranging my hens and one suddenly disappeared!
    I was beside myself, calling her name as if she would come! Haha!
    I madly started putting the hens back in the run thinking a hawk got my girl! But. How?!?
    I was right there! There was zero squawking!! She’s the favorite of my hubs and grandson! She just started laying!!
    As I put the second hen back in the run, here comes RoadRunner out of the coop! I checked and she had raced inside to lay an egg!!!
    Huge relief!! Heart attack avoided. Smart girl!!

    Last May 2022 we received 4 pullets, Buff Orpingtons. By the end of June one died and then another a few weeks later. I was devastated. A year later my two girls are an absolute joy . They follow me around my 1/4 acre garden like puppies. So fun.
    They don’t roost but have made two nesting boxes for bedtime and the other two boxes is where they lay. The girls have made their home. They are also my peace and joy. ❤

    I have one hen who wants to sleep in the nesting box. I have tried changing the poles, I put timed lights in there so she can see- but unless I go out each night and turn on a flashlight and coax her up - she just prefers the nesting box. I got her right before she started to lay and the place she was before they all piled up on the ground together and didn't use roosts. Her flock mate will use the roost with the others but she will always go back to the nest box. She did fly down into the wall once about two months ago when getting down from the roost and bloodied her beak. I don't know if that plays a part in it. At this point I am just letting her sleep where she feels comfortable. Every thing I research says to make her sit on the roost. But she doesn't want to. She is healthy and happy and I guess I would like for someone to agree with me and just say its fine.

    • @WelcometoChickenlandia
      @WelcometoChickenlandia  7 місяців тому +1

      Your last sentence says it all. If she's happy and healthy and the poop in the nesting box doesn't bother you too much, it's completely fine!

    Hi Dahlia, I really hate to bother you, because I know you have so many questions. But I have to ask. Sorry. I guess I have a strange question, because I've tried to find the answer online and UA-cam, all I can find is what to do for a sour crop and impacted crop. That being said, I have a hen that has always been the low hen in the pecking order. She is a grab and go feeder, meaning, she swallows it when she grabs it and runs. The last few months I've been treating her for sour crop and recently impacted crop, and I did get her crop cleared, when I was checking her to make sure that it had cleared ,at the bottom of her crop, I felt a fleshy lump, feels like a tumor, hard and fleshy ,unmovable the size of a quarter , only spherical ,and her crop is still not draining overnight. She is going to the bathroom. Consistency is clay like which is understandable because of the diet. I have her on. But not a whole lot .That could be due to not feeding her a whole lot ,only the egg and yogurt mixture. I'm still treating her for sour crop and I was wondering ,do chickens get cancer of the crop ?

    I've had chickens for a little over a year. I've dealt with egg bound chickens & coccidiosis. I help a friend with 75-100 hens a few times a week. But the thing that nearly made me start to think about selling my 3 pullets was integrating those 3. I will never integrate in the fall again. Within 2 weeks the original 6 started molting. Grouchiness because of new kids on the block, testy because of molting & then parasites. About the time I decided to sell the 3 pullets 1 of them finally stood up to the flock and this week another started laying. The civil unrest has rounded a corner. It isn't perfect but darn close.

    I have six chickens that are @6 months old. I have had them since they were 3 days old:) They are a joy to have; however, there is one hen that isn’t maturing as fast as the others and she gets picked on. She is often by herself and gets chased away from water and food. What can I do? I go out and give her special attention and make sure I bring the water and food to her, but I feel like this is going to become a bigger problem. She seems lonely:( thank you for any input/advice you can give. - Sarah from Canada

    You always give us the best information! With the antibiotics though, I'm in Oregon and my vet told me that they're not allowed to prescribe or give and to biotic to foul. Apparently there's a law that says no. So what would the alternative be or?

    • @WelcometoChickenlandia
      @WelcometoChickenlandia  7 місяців тому +1

      Unless I'm missing something, I don't think your vet is giving you correct information, unless that is just the policy of his/her clinic. The law says antibiotics must be obtained from a vet at the vet's discretion. www.oregonvma.org/care-health/equine-and-livestock/health-safety/otc-sales-of-livestock-antibiotics-end-in-june-2023-how-to-prepare

    When feeding your chickens kitchen scraps, are pesticides/herbicides used to grow that food a concern? My mother buys conventional food like cabbage, carrots, apples, and whole wheat spaghetti that she chops ups and gives her chickens everyday to cut back on the amount of later food she gives them. They are three years old and no longer lay eggs. Could this be related to their diet?

    I love your channel and you have helped me tremendously. I have a huge dilemma. I have a chicken that suddenly went completely blind. She's not dealing with this well and stopped eating. She is still drinking but will not eat anything I give her. She's been blind for 3 months now and was eating before. The only way I can get her to eat something is if I let her out into the yard to forage but it's still not enough nutrition. I've noticed that I can now feel her breast bone and her crop is always empty at night before I put her in her spot to roost. I don't know what to do. I don't want to loose her. Can you give me any advice on what I can do?

    • @WelcometoChickenlandia
      @WelcometoChickenlandia  7 місяців тому +1

      I'm so sorry! I'm wondering if when she forages, you can put some feed and yummy treats in front of her. That way, she can feel like she is finding the feed naturally, which seems like what she prefers?
      There are some illnesses that can cause blindness. If she is indeed sick, your best bet would be to get her to a vet if possible.

    I incubated an egg, baby is now 4 days old and is acting lethargic. Baby isn't running like a normal chick, more like a lazy walk, but legs aren't out to the side, more like sitting on his/her butt all the time, sleeping most of the day, and barely eating. There are also no signs he/she is making bowl movements. I'm really worried, not sure how to help this little baby! I have given him/her sugar water with egg yolk and seemed to help with mood, but for only a brief period of time.
    Please help 🙏

I have a 20 week old black & white Easter Egger that doesn't have standing-up tail feathers. She seems slow to mature, and I had to nurse her through vent gleet- but other than that, she's really healthy. I just wondered why she wouldn't have tail feathers.. 🤔

    Hi Dahlia, I have a problem I am hoping you or viewers can help. I have an old hen who was in charge of my small flock for a long time. She grew spurs because of being the alpha. As time went on my flock grew and I have a rooster now. He HATES her and torments her. I imagine he sees her as a roo. He doesn't attack her really, but he chases her and keeps her away from the flock (along with another brahma hen, no idea why). She is old. Is there anything I can do so he doesn't make her life hell? Thank you in advance!

    I think it is very important to never bring an adult chicken into your flock. Too many risk factors, too big of a chance of things going very badly. You can only prevent so much with isolation or quarantine. Just don't do it. A friend of mine has learned the hard way, twice. She thought the first time was a fluke. But after losing almost all her chickens, she's decided also to never ever bring in adult chickens into her flock again. If you want more chickens, get some day old chicks.
