    I'm amazed that in the giant word of youtube, there are precious few detailed videos on transom replacement where you can actually follow along step by step.
    Thank you.

    just a heads up for any of you DIY out there, do your hot coat of resin on the ply with a bit of acetone mixed in so that it soaks better into the timber. Let the resin cure before laying down your chop strand, that way the chop wont suck the resin back out of the ply.

      the DentalDude that is a very good tip. Thinning it will allow it to dig in the wood.

    Couple of suggestions. I save cardboard from large items, like washers, driers, refrigerators and water heaters for painting and to place on the floor for projects like this. Two; sometimes you can put rollers with oil based paints in plastic bags and then place them in a refrigerator (not freezer), and they stay usable for some time.

    Hello - good work. I realize there are a number of different ways and techniques but want to point out that around 8 min you are coating the entire transom with resin to seal it. I would suggest mixing that coat with acetone if you are using poly resin - that allows better saturation of the wood especially if you sand it first.

    for all of you wondering what marine plywood is made of? its not the glue that is used, its the wood. the tree is a south American wood called OKUMA it hold to rot water 5 times longer than standard pine plywood. my full time job was at boat bodyshop and rebuilt many many floors and transoms over the years. looks like you did everything the right way. and guys, when starting this make sure you have 2-5 weeks time, BIG JOB lots of steps to complete..

    I dilute the first few coats on plywood with Stirene makes in soak in more imo looks like ur doin a great job.That PL adheasive is great we use it for granite work all the time and that stuff really holds :)

    • @lancehenthorn17
      @lancehenthorn17 5 років тому

      I always use stirene and dilute the first few coats. The plywood needs to soak in the resin. If you just wet out and glass the plywood. The plywood can drawl out the resin from the glass.

    you may want to consider the fact that acetone can be any where from 14-20 a gallon and you still have a long way to go and usually you cant save your brushes and rollers anyway also consider covering your garage floor with old tarps or plastic much cleaner just throw away

    The Fillet mixture does have strength due to the strands, but the strength comes from the glass laid up on the sides of the stringers. The fillets act as glue and a transition from the stringer to the hull. Makes the glass lay down better.

  • @turner593
    @turner593 12 років тому

    hey really nice work, but as the way I do stringers you might wanna try on that filet after you gyped it up with chopped strand puddy mixture to immediately glass over it with with one layer of Matt or 2 about 4 inches wide then roll out the you dont have the airbubble toubles afterwards just a thought

    Did you use marine grade plywood? If you do use marine grade plywood, would you still need to the extra water proofing or is it a 'rather be safe then sorry' thing? Thanks mate, love your restore.

    when doing you filler, apply your thicked resin and mix up 100- 200 ml. of wet resin and use a 2in. china brush and wet smooth , and always use wax mixed in the last coat of resin

    If you have a swap meet or flea market you can buy cheap rollers and brushes there. Much cheaper then Home Depot. The only thing I would try to clean is the steel roller for rolling fiberglass.

    Are you counting on the fillet to add structural strength, or could you of cut the smaller piece at a 45 degree angle ?

    Dues humidity affect the wood before you apply the resin coats? I am doing this right now. It has been intermittently rainy and humid here in Florida. I have a garage here with ventilation and have put the marine plywood in front of a shop fan for a while and seems dry but wonder if I should bring the wood inside the office a/c to try and remove moisture overnight????

    • @FriscoBoatersGarage
      @FriscoBoatersGarage  6 років тому

      after6tuning I never really had any problem. I would not take it into another environment as it may change the cure time. Man that is a good question. I did a quick search and did not find anything definitive.

  • @mrmidnight32

    Hey man, I know you’ve been doing this for a good bit on a couple boats.
    Do you have a particular brand you use that’s quality but not top dollar as far as resign, catalyst and gel coat?
    All I’ve found and have been recommended was west systems but they seem very premium and expensive. Do you have a better or cheaper alternative to west system materials?

  • @FriscoBoatersGarage

    You wipe it down with acetone first and it makes the dry coat tacky.

    Hi Jay... This series was very well done from start to finish... You would be a great host for a DIY show!! Very detailed and personable. QUESTION: Seems like I heard you mention putting 2 layers of Chop on the transom for waterproofing, but later only saw you do one... Do you recommend 1 or 2 layers of the 1.5oz?

    Marine ply is no more water resistant than exterior ply, it is just very high quality, and has almost no voids between the laminates. Yes you would still treat it. Ehow has a big article on this.

    • @FriscoBoatersGarage

      Cost. We are not building war ships. If wood is done right, you will not have to worry.

    • @timsharpe3498
      @timsharpe3498 8 років тому

      Wood done right is fiber glassed wood and fiber glass is a composite. So, technically you're killing yourself to turn wood into a composite instead of just using composite materials like Coosa.
