Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.
This is such a criminally underrated masterpiece and by far Kathy Bates and Jennifer Jason Leigh’s best roles.
Yep it totally is
Stephen King wrote this specifically with Kathy in mind because he loved her so in Misery. She was incredible in this role. The whole cast was 👩🍳 💋
What Natalie said ❤
Great actors from my childhood and before. Classics.
I really enjoyed your analisys on these important scenes, like how Selena was trying to save herself by removing part of herself from the situation, how Dolores and Vera bonded, what was the most important thing in their lives, and also how people can see the same things happening in their home totally differently. I grew up in a physically, mentally and emotionally abusive household and that is exactly what was and still is happening to me. My siblings and I was berated, belittled and beaten by our father almost every day and our mother did nothing, she wasn't present, she was waiting in another room until our father finished. I have never in my life seen my father hit my mother once, only us kids and our dogs. Today I am very hostile towards my father, I am angry at him but still extremely scared of him, mostly just trying to avoid him when I am home. My mother doesn't want to listen and understand why I don't want to talk to him, she seems to have forgotten everything that happened (my father is old and weak now so he isn't physically violent anymore) and she is always pushing and emotionally blackmailing me to be nice to my father, to hug and kiss him and answer his emails. She says I should do it for her because I am hurting her by not doing it. I think she doesn't want to admit what happened because that would mean that she made the wrong decision by marrying him and letting him do this to us.
Thank you for the reaction! This is such an amazing movie
Even after all these years this is still one of the best movies I have ever seen
Beaches, Steel Magnolias, Part one of Loki and Dolores Claiborne in a three weeks span? I am ecstatic! Thank you for all of the amazing reactions!
Absolutely and waiting for Terms of Endearment and On Golden Pond, and Sophie's Choice.
4:35 right out of the gate you get it! "I can tell by the music someone is going to die". THIS, the natural insight you have, is why you are one of my favorite reactors.
Delores and Vera should have gotten Oscar nominations.
Kathy Bates should’ve won an Oscar for this performance!! She was magnificent
The fact that she wasn't even nominated that year (1995 was the year Braveheart won Best Picture fyi) is outright shameful.
@@jbvader721Even more shameful is that the ahistorical, fabricated, fake 'Braveheart' was even considered for nomination, never mind anything else.
I’m crying when you said at the end, parents are just people too. I have never felt more connected to you/ your channel and I’m 40 and never wanted children but have compartmented trauma. Parents do what they THINK is best. (Not that dad) but I love your ending summary.
Sending love to you and yours from Orlando Florida ❤❤❤❤
Kathy Bates is one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE actresses… I would watch ANY show she appears in.
This role is so multidimensional: Dolores has hardened her exterior to be tough-as-nails in order to survive the awful things that have happened… but underneath, she loves so fiercely and would do ANYTHING necessary for someone she cares about.
Kathy Bates deserved a second Oscar for this!!! People don't show this movie enough love
Here comes an ugly cry! I hope you have your tissues at the ready. I love this movie. "Sometimes you have to be a high-riding bitch."
Hard to believe that is Sister Monica Joan from Call the Midwife. Judy Parfitt is an incredible actress. What an amazing, deep, emotional film this is.
One of my favorite movies of all time!
Listening to your life experiences, and watching your reactions is the highlight of my week. Thank-you, for reacting to this incredible, but difficult to watch film. It's well-crafted, but a rather traumatic subject for the majority of people. (Which makes it not very common to see uploaded.) I appreciate you choosing to react to it. Ta. 💜❤💙
Glad you enjoy it! Much love ❤️❤️
LOVE this movie. Thank you for reacting to it.
YES! Vera could have given her the money easily! If Vera cared at all about Delores, she would have given her the money and protected her & Selena. You can't tell me the Vera couldn't have let Delores and Selena move into her house and hire the best lawyer for them. Any lawyer could have shut down Delores drunk, child molesting husband with no problem! But Vera encouraged Delores to do otherwise, because she murdered her own husband. Of course Vera only valued her possessions, I suppose she felt that possessions were the only things that wouldn't leave her, or disappoint her. And Delores was just another possession to her. So was it love or just a bond over mutual murder and need? You have to go deeper, because murdering someone cannot be the only way out of a bad marriage.
Yes it could.
“Heaven Can Wait” with Warren Beatty and Julie Christie will be your new favorite movie. I’d love to see you react to that. I love your music videos too.
I think about the bond of two women who know that they both killed their men for self preservation. You wonder if through all the years spent together, did they ever talk about it again, or did the days go by every single day without speaking of it. Dolores read to Vera Salinas clippings, so you know Vera felt vindication, probably even for her own choice with her own man. That was a gift to Vera who didn't seem to have her own children since she left everything to Dolores. I bet Vera and Dolores stayed away from talking about the deaths of their men, and focused on their hatred of that detective. That's why Dolores was so unimpressed and not intimidated at all when he was doing everything he could to prosecute her for Veras death.
I always wanted to know more about Vera and her husband. The only thing we see is that he ignores her and he was cheating on her. Pretty shitty, but it makes her seem more deranged than Dolores cause it’s not as solid of a motivation to kill him
@@robertyeah2259 Vera seems pretty happy with her decision to remove her problematic husband. She did not seem happy with the thought of her bedsheet cleaner being removed. Seems like she can only objectify people. Pretty twisted lady even if she did make the correct call about Joe. I don't think Dolores and Vera "loved" each other. But, they did need each other. Yes, Vera is more twisted for sure. Amazing amazing amazing acting job. Really is an outstanding story and movie.
Vera and Dolores didn't love each other, but they needed each other. Salina and Dolores loved each other, but they didn't need each other.
Vera had 2 children in the book, who both died in an accident. Karma ??? Vera denied the death of her children in the book.
Another Stephen King movie : Needful Things
Needful Things : stars the same actor who played the old priest in : The Exorcist
Excellent video! I really enjoy your reaction videos and comments! Very wise and you bring up points that really make me think! Well done!
so happy you did this movie. it is definitely an underrated movie.
After young Selena had a nervous breakdown, her memories dissociated - which is why she doesn’t remember anything about her father… So, she honestly has no memory of being able to do things like cooking.
(I have similar “holes” in my memory: I’m “missing” an entire year when I was 12 yrs old. And, even tho I’m aware that I had been becoming a pretty good cook when I was a youngster… as an adult I could literally barely boil water.)
One of my favorite movies! Can't wait to see your reaction!
Really happy you enjoyed this movie. It’s always been a favorite of mine.
Abuse of females are examined by three characters- Delores, Selena, and Vera. Each we need to know about and each is vividly portrayed here.
A real tearjerker!
Filmed in Nova Scotia ...have not seen the movie though.
This and shawshank are my two favorite stephen king movies.
The absolute best film.
I loved your reaction and commentary ❤
New Subscriber 😳
Thank you so much 😁
I love this movie so much. I don't know how to feel about what you did but I know you did it for me. You should see another Stephen King movie called Needful Things.
just yo add context: in the book vera is not just sad because she wont get any better, she has nightmares and terrors that follow her even during the day and it is very sad to read
the movie is quite Faithfull considering usual standards still there is a lot of context I feel is good to know exists
You take your victim as you FIND them, not as you see them; which means, if you sneak up behind someone and scare them and afterwards find out they had a bad ticker, you’re still responsible for their heart attack. You can’t say after the fact, “well, I didn’t KNOW they had a bad heart.” It sounds like I’m being a smart-ass but I’m really not. I’m enjoying your reactions.
I love your Nigerian stories and anecdotes! ❤
Same. I see a lot of Yoruba culture still alive in PR There is so much overlap
❤️❤️❤️❤️
power-full meow
Selena may have more problems than her mother. Hence, the number of her prescription drugs. Well, the movie examine why?
I don't think Delores and Vera were lovers at all. There is nothing in the movie that indicates or even suggests this. Sometimes people can just be very close friends and that's it. All close relationships don't have to be romantic.
❤❤❤
You left a laugh burning on the stove?
It's Kathy.
Pronounce it I. Writing darling
@@ScenecrlyK.S.O. You pronounced it right when you didn't say Katie. Kah-thee.
53:11 Vera is STONE COLD 🥶💯
Please stop preaching and just watch the movie. You are making judgements based on false assumptions. Watch till the end, and then share your reaction. So many of the reactors offer armchair phys evals, without waiting and getting the whole story first. Please stop doing that, please!
Please there are enough reactors doing what you like - go watch them and leave my channel in peace. Thank you
YES!!! No one talks about this movie and it upsets me so bad. Such a fantastic movie. I cannot wait for this!
I still have it on DVD and watch it often.
This movie has always been a silent gem. Jennifer Jason Leigh has a huge archive of movies that she has starred in where she played a dark character. I suggest "Single, White Female" for a movie reaction.
"Let's donate our cup of laughter...."😆😂🤣I'm putting that in my pocket to save for later.
I have a guy at work I'm gonna use that on. He tells THE WORST dad jokes and stupid puns. Then when you don't laugh he explains it because he thinks you didn't get it. "Here's your cup of laughter!" Perfection!
As good as Misery is, I always preferred this over it and feel this is Bates's best performance
I feel she this role slighty is more worthy of an Academy Award than her role in Misery (which was great, and her win was deserved). This movie just rings Joan Crawford in Mildred Pierce all throughout.
Idk if it was mentioned, but Stephen King wrote this book with Kathy Bates in mind to play Dolores in the eventual movie adaptation, because he loved her performance in Misery so much.
I'm so glad you reacted to this. It's such a fantastic movie. ❤
The realization that your parents are more than just titles is a powerful moment in a child's life. It wasn't until i was in my early 30s that I finally understood that my Mom & Dad had a life of experiences before I came along. They were people with their own secrets, traumas, and sadnesses as well as triumphs and glorious memories. Understanding that helped me see them as full human beings and made me appreciate them even more.
Yes. I had the same epiphany when I had my first son.
Well said! ❤
I have three Kathy Bates movies purchased in my digital library. She’s my favorite actress. I also love Christopher Plummer. Man, he was a real bastard in this movie, lol. The lady that played Vira Donovan was also a fabulous actress, too bad we didn’t see more of her. Anyway, I love your reactions!!
Kathy Bates was brilliant.
I love this movie. It was very underrated. The performances are fantastic.
Sometimes being Bi#@h is all a woman has to hold on to has always been my favorite quote since seeing this film.
Yeah I love that quote
Your perception for subtleties is spot on, especially regarding the scene toward the beginning with Dolores and husband.
Yeah, you’re going to freakin’ cry…
I had a childhood trauma as a child seeing a guy died due to an accident. His face was haunting me and everytime I am in a lot of stress I would have nightmares about him. I would see him die over and over again in my dreams. I also am very afraid to drive. I went to counselling one time and this psychiatrist thought me how to repress my memory. I never really fully gone through it because the process is so daunting. You have to remember every single thing about that incident and then learn to zone out immediately. My nightmares had lesson and that incident triggered me less while I am driving but still not totally. So I could see how repressed memories could work in Selena's case. If people kept on denying things happened in the past + being an alcoholic + taking pills. Imagine how much damaged it does to your brain.
Anyway, you were right. This movie is a masterpiece. Everything about this movie was brilliant, from the acting, lighting, music, the transition into flashback, etc. Brilliantly done. I also never realized it until you mentioned that Vera is not gonna let her go. She will help her but she will also help in a way that Dolores will have more gratitude to her and stay forever. It shows how such a controlling person Vera and fits her personality so well. Great reaction.
So sorry about the trauma love.
@@ScenecrlyK.S.O. Oh its nothing. Its not something that constantly haunts me everyday. Its just that some stuff can trigger my brain.
Can't wait I think this movie is in my top 5. So hard to watch but soooo good.
Women helping and supporting other women, even with and through their own pain and traumas….gives me hope that females everywhere might have a better future in this old world.
You are so right about how a family can live in the same household and each person can have a different experience.
An example of that is Christina Crawford, daughter of Joan Crawford. Christina wrote a book called Mommie Dearest alleging that Joan mistreated her.
Joan adopted four kids, a son, Christina and a set of twin girls. Joan adored the twins and treated them better than she did the other children. After Christina wrote mommie dearest, The twins denied all of Christina‘s allegations and defended Joan. Because they were not mistreated and were definitely Joan’s favorites, they claimed they did not see the mistreatment of Christina even though they were in the same household.
I’m so glad you did this movie! One of my favorites. If you’ve ever watched The Sound of Music, you might recognize Detective Mackey played by Christopher Plummer. He played Captain Von Trapp, the father of the children. If you haven’t watched that movie yet you should!
Kathy Bates said this was her favorite move (that she acted in).
This was a very dark movie for me. So much pain and the kind of pain that you are afraid of telling someone because they may respond harshly. For a long time, I did not watch movies that had the actor who played the father in it, because he was just an absolute predator.
That was a cute story about the cup of laughter. Yeah, I'm American and wouldn't call my friends "bitches" either.
So guess which actor was in the Sound of Music
Hun - I know Christopher Plummer.
19:25 donate a cup of laughter. Love the Nigerian stories. 😂
I'm surprised this movie is not so well know. Well written, acted and produced. Awesome reaction.
I read my mom's Stephen King books when I was young, but was always intot he spooky stuff, so wasn't interested in it, or the movie when it came out. But I read this last year (and immediately saw the movie) and loved them. Possibly a slept on Stephen King movie, I rarely see it show up on reaction channels.
Yes this film is totally underrated
Kudos to your channel for reacting to this underrated gem of a movie which Kathy Bates has stated is her favorite role. 🙏✌️♥️
Kathy Bates has said this is (so far) her favourite role of her career.
This is such an underated film it's brilliant...great reaction!!
Oh I am so excited about this one!
another Kathy Bates classic! she’s also brilliant in Primary Colors.. def worth a watch
This film and reaction was an experience....for sure.
Thank you...
I love your analogies. You could be a literature teacher.
my mom was a literature teacher
I first watched this film when I was a child it took me years to understand why at times it was hard for me to watch this movie I was sexually abused when I was a child I blocked out my trauma until I was 14 years old I'm 33 years old now rewatching the film now as an adult I totally have a bigger appreciation for it
Such a great movie! And you always give us the best reactions ❤ This made my evening 😊
I'm so glad!
Omgggg. Cant wait
You were talking about using your muscles....my coworker is half my age and can't lift a da*n thing.....utterly helpless! 😂
Fantastic book and book. The best of Stephen King! He wrote this book with Kathy Bates in mind. We LOVE you and your channel!!
I don't understand how Kathy Gates didn't receive her flowers yet... However they keep giving them to Meryl Streep 😒 Don't get me wrong she's a great actress, however Kathy Bates and Sally Field are wayyyy better to me. I truly feel like Meryl only got real recognition when she did "The devil's wear Prada".... She doesn't have as much range as Kathy 😕 but hey Kathy probably didn't do somethings in Hollyweird or have the "Beauty" in their eyes that that consider natural beauty. However she has range and not a one trick pony... And I absolutely love her for it. Absolutely one of my top favorites and she deserves her flowers while she's still here 🙏🏾💐🙏🏾
I LOVED your review. Tou treated us the audience as your friends viewing the movie with you.
There's a little more in the book, but the book is literally just Dolores' recorded confession to the police -- the crime drama and reconnecting with her daughter is new for the movie and I like it, but you learn a little bit more about what is going on with Vera. By the end she is mostly paralyzed, has dementia and is only lucid maybe a day or so every couple weeks, but she also has TERRIFYING hallucinations that Dolores can only suppose what they were. But she has kids in the book and Dolores assumes they just have a strained relationship because Vera talks about calling them and sending them letters, only for it to be revealed later that they died years ago. It has been a long time but I THINK it is implied they were killed because they took out one of her late husband's cars that had been sabotaged. So she is living with the guilt of her entire family being gone because of her and is just in denial about it. Dolores thinks her hallucinations are about them.
This is the marvelous Kathy (Katherine?) Bates. This is not a horror movie. It is an investigation of domestic abuse through the eyes of Delores and her daughter.
I have survivors in my family, and I'm told Selena's flashback on the ferry is dead-on for someone reliving a repressed memory. Right down to the dissociation-- the feeling of seeing yourself from a third-person perspective or like events are happening on a time delay.
My case was different. I identified with everyone's trauma but my own. I'm dealing with that now. But then I was invisible. Until I was needed. And did what was required of me.
I will always love this movie. I love your Nigerian views about relationships between men and women vs. men and their children. This movie was about how wives were treated in the 1960s and 70s in America and when women started to take a stand against domestic violence and sexual abuse. Dolores was eternally grateful for the advice that Vera gave her about how to respond to Joe’s sexual abuse. Selena had to recognize what happened and empathize with what Dolores went through trying to raise her daughter in a safe environment.
I understand. Not SA. But other things. You disengage. So you can survive another day. Or another moment in that day. You endure and you forget. And keep forgetting.
I thought you would like my take on Bonnie Tyler "Total eclipse of the heart". Thanks JJL
Love Vera 👍😎👌☺️
Your comment about the different views people have of the same person ties in with a repeated theme from the book, “The inside and outside of a marriage aren’t much more than kissing cousins.”
In the book, Joe never hits her again after she threatened him. But everyone in town thought he did. Dolores hits her arm while cleaning and gets a big bruise. A lady in the store sees it and says, “Ain’t men awful!” And Dolores has no clue until she thinks about it what the woman meant. But the lady assumed Joe had given her the bruise, even though she just hit it while working.
The book really tackles the fact that you can be looking right at something and not see what’s actually going on.
19:53 I love the story you shared about how in Nigeria when a joke doesn’t hit and laughing into the cup. That was fun insight from you, one of my favorite UA-cam reactors. ❤
22:25
You are a wonderful lady. Do you know how many times your reactions have raised my spirits?
God bless you
Wow, thank you so much ❤️❤️❤️❤️
The daughter has depression, PTSD, and anxiety.
Your reactions are so wonderful. I have been crying my eyes out along with you. This reaction and Fried Green Tomatoes and Beaches which are films I been seen long time ago. I own all three films. Thank you. I enjoyed you. ❤️
Stopped taking to my brother for this very thing. Both living in the home both witnesses to trauma. But he denies any events took place.
01:08:24 Her backwards reflection in the mirror is super creepy.
This film is every bit as good as Shawshank Redemption.
This film is in my top 5 favorites of all time! This should have won all of the Oscars. Your videos are delightful!
