Hi I did all the folders and files etc as you had mentioned specifically. However, My PS3 isn't booting into that USB thumb drive. I'm doing the 4.89 update. Is there a specific thumb drive I would need. Maybe mine isn't compatible. I'm using a SanDisk 32 gb drive. Any help would be appreciated.
Have you formatted the thumb drive into fat32, it's apparently the only way the ps3 reads the files and renamed the file minus the numbers. I used just a regular lexar thumb drive.
@@joeydesg i have the same problem. My ps3 was in a boot loop from a failed jailbreak attempt, so I gave up and wanted to use a new ssd anyway. I put in the ssd expecting it to just reformat by itself but it said the same thing as your video. So I got a 4gb generic usb, put the update, and plugged it in. It’s formatted to fat 32, but the ps3 won’t detect it. Do I have to format the drive too?
Your very welcome the trick to this whole update is to make sure your usb was formatted fat32 and rename the update file. It's odd how that works. Glad I could help you out. 😀👍🏻
@joeydesg I'm using the super slim model, but for some odd reason, it gives me the "preparing to update" thing when I put the USB stick into the console. When it is updateding, it goes fast, but it slows down at 90 percent, and it gets stuck 98 percent. The 98% percent thing didn't move up for the last 2 hours for me last night. I have a NEW hdd 1tb installed into the console, but it takes FOREVER for it to install. And remember, I had to wait 2 hours, but nothing changed and it was stuck 98%. So I don't know what to do. Going into safe mode and clicking on software update, it will just freeze. I have UA-cam shorts video about my thing staying stuck at 98%.

Hello, I tried sticking an old laptop hard drive into my PS3 after the old hard drive had a fall and stopped working correctly, I was just wondering if I can do all this from a phone? Since I don't own a PC and I pretty much live in the middle of nowhere
If your ps3 is able to connect to your internet then yes it possibly could get the download, and also format your hard drive. If not then the usb stick for the update is the way to go. You can use your phone as a hotspot for the ps3 to get the internet. Hopefully I was able to help out. 👍🏻
If you have the usb with the update make sure it was formatted to fat 32, and the update is renamed so you remove the 488 on the file name. Hopefully, if not try a reset hold the power till it goes off and try again. Also make sure your controller is plugged in the first usb port.
@@giorgoskekkou7 yes I finally fixed it. First of all, is everything connected correctly inside or your console? Especially the Blu-ray drive ecc. You only have to check this if you opened it, of course. After that, what you have to do is take the hard disk drive and format it witch your pc to fat 32. Then you have to create a 30GB partition and leave the rest as is. The ps3 will see this as an error and force it to format the drive. Edit: by formatting the drive you’re losing every data on it, so of course do this if nothing else is fixing your ps3 or you don’t mind losing your data.
I'm glad you were able fix your ps3, it's odd how these systems all have the same issues at one point, most of them do. I own 3 ps3 and only 1 had to be updated.
Yes it is connected, everything worked great right before the hdd format. I have tried many things and still have a problem. I would try again this method that you suggest, but I think it's unlikely fixable. Anyway what program you used for formating and creating partionn on the hdd?
That's odd, cause so far I've done 3 different ps3 and had no issues going all the way to 100%. If it stops at 99% something ain't right and that's an issue above my intelligence. I'm sure other youtubers will be able to explain better than I.
