Those are very cool tools. The original rule for the Odd Job was a simple wood ruler so perhaps a new "ruler" project could be in store for that little gem! LOL

Dear Wranglerstar, Love your videos. I recently started my own construction company and your tutotials on repairing and re- handling shovels and axes have been extremely valuable to me. And I love seeing the old and hand made tools. However, i have one criticism: Your videos tend to be quite long. Now that I've written it it sounds petty, but I have two little kids and rarely have 20 minutes to watch on of your videos from beginning to end.
    Keep up the good work!
    Thats it.

Because the combo square is a lot more functional when actually working. You can hold onto the combo square and balance with the same hand; as in leaning over a wall when marking a rafter. It does everything the odd job does and is also ergonomic. They don't look quite as cool though.

    Cody,
As you said, it is not the most accurate of tools, but for the "odd jobs" that you are doing it will be more accurate than a SWAG tool. A modification that could be done is to drill a hole large enough for the scribe to fit in. The hole should be on the flat end and centered with the point, that way you could use it as a plumb bob. To use it as a plumb bob, take the scribe out and put it through the holder, on the end, of your chalk line, and it is now a plumb bob.

I just came across a small antique shop and it has the same tool, but it's for metal work. It has a tiny vice and anvil. The man said he has a couple of the Stanley tools in this video. He has lots of old levels, squares, specialist Irwin auger bits and brace. The auger bit comes in 2 pieces with a separate blade. 26" woods planes too.

In the 2nd year of my apprenticeship as an engineers patternmaker in the UK (there are many trades which use timber other than carpenters) back in 1959 this was one of the projects we were given to produce - Wooden pattern of the body from jelutong - then went into the foundry to mould and cast it in brass. Then it was cleaned up (fettled) and the fittings made. Still have it - never used, but still a talking point for those which are interested.

This legendary layout tool has been reborn. Made by Stanley from 1888 this tool is as useful today as it was then. You can be sure that if you pull it out now, you'll be the talk of the workshop. Made from solid brass and steel, the Odd Job is precision machined on all faces. This tool is truly multifunctional and combines the functions of an inside mitre and try square, scribing tool, T-square, a depth gauge, depth marking scribe, and a plumb level.
It is supplied as standard with a 6" wooden brass edged rule which is graduated in metric and imperial. For the woodworker who thought he had everything. Dakota Part No DK1026

A company from Ohio I think called Woodpecker or Woodpeckers made a small and large version of the “Odd Job” tool. I believe theirs was red anodized aluminum. A friend bought one when they came out probably 4-5 years ago. I’ve tinkered with it once and it seemed pretty cool. If I recall correctly it came with a rule also. I don’t remember what size he bought.
I think maybe a combination of Stanley selling a single tool that could do multiple jobs and carpenters starting to specialize in building certain parts of a building or house might have contributed as well. My grandfather traveled all over the U.S. during WW 2 as a carpenter for the Army and Army Air Corp, building barracks, operational Building, hangers, homes, etc, and he carried 2 of those in his traveling tool box. I remember seeing one of them on occasion. They built the entire house, masonry, framing, windows, roofing and all the finish trim and plaster themselves . I think the only thing the carpenters didn’t do was plumbing and electric but they one of each on their crew....

I have an older one... because it says on it, Stanley 1, I believe it may have been Stanley's first tool. Mine says 1887 on it. On the ruler, Stanley made many folding rulers, most will fit this tool. As I search rulers on the internet, I began to realize, Stanley had a wooden ruler for each trade, and until the 1940s, folks knew your trade by the folding ruler in your pocket. The rulers are really cheap at flee markets. Stanley had a 6", 12", folding 12", 2' folding, all would fit this tool.

Re your beam drill; If you can find an old fashioned machinist who knows friction welding, he can extend the shanks on either of your drill bits to whatever length you like.

I got one of these for Christmas when I was 6 and am so glad to finally find out what to do with it.

Amazing some of the things they came up with. To do so much and fit in your pocket... Cool!

You sir are "out of order" ....... The Garrett Wade nefangled gizmo is calibrated in metric and as such should be banned from this august channel ;O)

Just flip the rule over for real measurements! :-)

Exactly so! I use mine on a regular basis with real measurements and it is a joy to use. I have both rulers for it but often leave the 6" one in as it makes the tool handier and I rarely need the larger reach of the 12"

Thankyou Frank Orts ,you win the gold star for getting it correct ....It is a RULE , not a RULER people !!
