You know what this game needed to make up for being the intestinal swill that it is? A Sonic Says. Right at the end, after the credits roll, a Sonic Says suddenly pops up: "Hey kids, beastiality is wrong. If you're an animal and a human starts hitting on you, what do you do? You get out of there!" That would've made up for (almost) everything.
Gamers, including Sonic fans such as myself, would only get this game (as well as Shadow the Hedgehog) for a couple of good reasons: #1: For collector's items and purposes to appreciate whatever is provided to us just to prove ourselves as true fans and not relying on classics only, and I'm supporting Sega and the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise #2: It was surprisingly commercially successful #3: Silver is actually a great and likable character, just like all the other characters, and Mephiles is an excellent villain, just like Black Doom from Shadow the Hedgehog #4: It has such awesome music, and "His World" and "Dreams of an Absolution" are great theme songs and great video game songs, and I love the songs and the music #5: It had so much potential and #6: With #5 being stated, there are other infamous games out there that are actually worse than this game along with Shadow the Hedgehog the game, Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly, Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness, Earthworm Jim 3D, Final Fight: Streetwise, Mega Man X7, etc. So yeah, those are reasons why I would still get the game on PS3.
I personally believe if sega delayed the launch by one year, they would just cut a bunch of stuff away and leave only silver, making it a shadow-the-hedgehog ps3 version. It's the only new idea that fit well. Also check out the 2005 demo, it was more finished than the final game! oh, the irony...
I was at an Microsoft event where they had a few demo units with this game and I could glitch through the entire levels. Some marketing guy saw what I was doing and asked me to stop because he didn't want the TV crew to see this XD
Zones like Marble Zone were not the rule, they were the exception; the original Sonic games are mostly about keeping momentum to finish the levels quickly, and so whenever you attack an enemy in those games you keep going. Every time you attack an enemy in Sonic '06 however... you stop. There are tons of them, they all have health bars, and a lot are mandatory to defeat. This happens through the entire game, and whenever something isn't start-and-stop, it's a scripted event.
you forgot to mention the fact that sonic the hedgehog has LONG and FREQUENT load times. talk to someone in town, accept mission from them, game loads. they tell you what you have to do, game loads again. you beat or fail the mission, game loads. person talks about your success/failure, game loads again. i feel that the game only needs to load before and after the mission. i would have to agree with your review, however.
The first difference is that Mark always does the main CGR series, obviously. The second difference is that the Undertow crew reviews mostly more modern and mainstream games than Mark does.
It's sad to see a stellar franchise go this low, but Sonic Colors really brought Sonic back, everyone who hasn''t played a single Sonic game since the Dreamcast should try that!
I totally agree with you, this could have been the best Sonic game! The only things that sucked are: - Elise - the glitches - the gameplay Silver was also received very negative, but I think Silver is a great character who made a very bad first appearance in this game. Mephiles is also a very cool character who just made a bad first appearance. I think Sega must remake this game to prove that this could be the best Sonic game ever.
Saying that Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 is the worst Sonic game ever is a bit of an understatement. It just destroyed what little was left of Sonic's credibility and made him the butt of gamers jokes.
Who thinks we should get a future Sonic The Hedgehog video-game which features the Knothole Freedom Fighters- Sally Acorn, Antoine D'Collette, Bunnie Rabbot, and Rotor Walrus. That would be the second greatest game after Sonic Adventure and this one, all I can do is hope for this future game to be possible.
I meant by comparison to games like Sonic 06. To be honest the last Sonic game I bought before Colors was Heroes,so it was kinda new to me. Most of the games I've passed up. I will admit they are not the best but at least they look like they tried. BTW the use of wisps in Colors for the most part were optional. Colors had some good level design. They actually put some thought into it. The only thing I hate was the controls in the 3D sections. Is it over-rated? Yes. Is it terrible? No.
There's no point in watching reviews for this game; you already know what the score is and what the reviews gonna be about... surprisingly enough, no mention of the glitches.
The reason this game wasn't any good was actually all SEGA's fault. They wanted the game out in time for Christmas so they forced Sonic Team to release it unfinished.More than half of the game's content was cut out, most of Sonic's friends were unfinished(mainly Knuckles),game had loading issues and glitches,Day/Night cycle was removed,Super Sonic was removed, the ability to play as any character in any level was removed, and what was finished was rushed. This is why you dont release a game early.
Is it bad that I actually wanna try this game out? I know it's bad but still, I'm curious. I guess I'm trying to look at it as Sonic Adventure 3. ....Which Sega should make in my opinion.
"All these new characters", Sonic '06 only introduced 3 new characters, those being Elise and Silver and Mephiles but in terms of only playable characters Silver is the only new one.
Yeah...because they were so many humans in the genesis games, right? Please! Sonic games for the most part have always been lighthearted. It was a game about a hedgehog rescuing his animal friends from an evil scientist. It had some serious moments but was never over-dramatic. The problem was this game tried too hard to be serious. It's a talking blue cartoony hedgehog who runs really fast who's main antagonist is shaped like an egg. How serious should we really take this.
In Sonic CD the slower gameplay served a purpose, because the emphasis was on exploration, not going fast. Sonic 1 has no such emphasis, and neither does Sonic 06. They SHOULD be fast paced, but they aren't.
I know it's opinion, and I guess I should clarify that the game being bad is certainly my opinion. The point is, you wanted a deeper analysis, and I recommended one. Whether or not you agree with it is up to you of course.
Wrong! Sonic was blown away after Sonic Heroes with Shadow The Hedgehog, and got a little back on track with Unleashed, and fully back on track with Colors and Generations.
It's actually kinda sad because if this game had just been canceled or delayed awhile so that the game could have been polished up and all the problems fixed, I feel it would have been the successor to Sonic Adventure 2 that it was promised to be. Instead it nearly killed my all time favoriet character in fiction and overshadowed Sonic and the Secert Rings, which to be honest, was actually a good game, werid controls aside. I think CGR has a review of it here some were.
The sad thing is that this had the potential to be the best sonic game. The story (minus the whole human, hedgehog thing) was very good for a sonic game and I'd like to see future sonic games take more emphasis on story. One of the reasons Sonic Adventure 2 is my all time favorite. The music for this game was really good, the graphics for the actual stages looked great (minus soleanna), and it had sonic's best voice actor. They just failed in the gameplay department which is the whole point-_-
Holy hot dam you nailed everything thing that needed to be said about this game, i am impressed good sir. Now i must bring the question...remember that old sonic 90's show that only lasted one season but was really awesome.....why doesnt sega make a game about that. It has a really gritty story line, the atmosphere can be awesome if done right and levels could be based around which character or characters you'd play. Plus eggman's voice is freaking awesome to hear! Sega make this game now!!!!!!!
Honestly, this game is so bad that it's almost impossible to cover all the bases in a quick video review. There's so many things that bring it down, that I could personally go on for hours about it. Now, this isn't to diss Derek or anything, but if you really want an in-depth review of this trainwreck of a game, go look up Clement's review. It's a multi-parter still in the process, but it's probably the most detailed analysis of this game you'll find.
No, I'm not defending this game at all. In truth I've never played it, but I definitely intend to. I was just pointing out that the review criticises this game for having sections that break up the speed, and yet that aspect of Sonic gameplay has been there since the very first one. This does indeed look like the worst canon Sonic game ever made.
I really like this games stages but the technical issues are so bad its unbelievable. Like the fact that they never where able to patch and fix the loads is one of the biggest issues.
If SEGA didn't make Sonic Team release the game during its beta stage, it could have been much better. The gameplay could have been refined, the removed features could have been added (such as free play where you could play as any character in any level, or the day/night cycle), and they could have improved the level design. Heck they had to REMOVE Sonic's speed due to get the game released on time. In the first build, he was faster, and had more animations. Sadly they had to be cut. Thanks SEGA
Mobius was never stated in Sonic 1, but it doesn't matter. That was then, and this is now, and Mobius is no longer enough. Yeah, plot matters, dude. It may have escaped your notice, but kids don't actually like games that are aimed at them. They're smarter than that. Colors and Generations were made to throw a bone to the classic fanbase. Which is great and all, 'cause everyone deserves consideration, but eventually, they'll have to go back to something at least as epic as the Adventure games.
I started playing this game just recently and I must say it is not as bad as people say it is (though I think they still need more lesser animal characters in the series). Don't you dare try to argue with me on this one! All games have glitches okay?! And the plot's great! All the negetivety towards this game makes me feel betrayed as a Sonic fan! I mean is this how you thank the Sonic Team for working their butts off 24 hours a day skipping sleep and personal hygine?!?
But Labyrinth is actually playable. This game is filled with a shit ton of glitches. Labyrinth without Sonic is actually a decent game, its just the fact that Sonic moves so slow is what hurts it
So did Sonic 2006, but that didn't stop it from being delisted. Square didn't have to remake the game; they chose to. However, just because they do it doesn't mean that SEGA has to do it, too. Remaking a terrible game that already bombed is a waste of time. Such resources would be better put into making new games. Even if Sonic 2006 was to be remade, it would be a terrible idea. The game's concepts are silly, ridiculous, and heavily flawed. Recreating that would be disastrous.
I remember playing this game at my cousin's house, and I'm kinda glad it wasn't released on the Wii as well (although "Sonic & The Secret Rings" wasn't that great to play, either).
Well, you had to collect 50 rings to get the Chaos Emeralds, so you needed to explore a little bit for that. As for 06, speed is the least of this game's concerns. stop-and-go gameplay could've worked if it weren't for the fact that the game is a total abomination for so many other reasons. Gotta love what they did to Crisis City in Generations though. They actually made that level good. Dare I say, the best in the game (or at least my favorite).
I'm well aware of the historical significance and negative reception of "ET" for the Atari 2600. How the guy behind it only had a little over a month to make it and how it practically initiated the gaming crash of 1983. I haven't played it nor have I played any Atari games. It can't be as bad or as atrociously unethical as "Custer's Revenge" though.
Derek there is nothing wrong with Sonic being with Humans. He has been from the get go (Eggman remember?), the story is just like a Sonic Adventure storyline and you guys praised that therefore I don't see the fairness of calling this story bad.
Why are you taking what I said as if its an opinion?I said 16 different play-styles would be hard on the programmers, especially if they had a strict dead-line and less people to work with. SA1 and SA2 glitches combined wouldn't even equal to half of the glitches found in 06. I hope you don't call yourself a gamer because you can tell if a game is broken
Egg man is so smart, instead of killing sonic in the video games I bet he was the one who produced this game and has killed sonic using bad games instead
I love how people compare this to ET and Action 52. Trust me...those are worse. This still has fun to it that is hampered by glitches, frame rate drops, inconsistent graphics, very bad controls in several instances, and some of the most padded game play I have ever seen in a Sonic game. How many times I have to repeat a level, or do some really tedious beat em up sections, or some really annoying puzzle is what drives me nuts.
Yeah no kidding... I thought the same thing too. The loading screens were inexcusable in both their frequency and length. It made me do a facepalm and Frisbee the disc out the window!
You weren't the only one, I was really excited about the game before it hit shelves. I thought the demo was great, but when I purchased the full game that's when I finally realized it was shit.
I did like classic Sonic mode in Generations a bit. If you want to play one or both of them, go for Generations first. It's far less embarrassing (and for more reasons that not having the word "colors" in its title; what the hell, SEGA) and if you play it before Colors, it will make the pain easier to bear.
Please refer to any game released after this one for proof of the contrary. A lot of things have changed since '06, if you hadn't noticed. And maybe Sonic's speed here would be relatively fine... if the game's levels weren't so big and empty.
You get out of there!"
That would've made up for (almost) everything.
The only thing good about this game was the superb soundtrack.
Watch Cygnus Destroyers review of this game.
The only thing I would say is impossible to criticise
This game of Sonic 06 should be made into a theatrical movie. It really deserves that
Sonic 3?
3:52 Sonic's reaction to the loading screen.
3:52
Gamers, including Sonic fans such as myself, would only get this game (as well as Shadow the Hedgehog) for a couple of good reasons:
#1: For collector's items and purposes to appreciate whatever is provided to us just to prove ourselves as true fans and not relying on classics only, and I'm supporting Sega and the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise
#2: It was surprisingly commercially successful
#3: Silver is actually a great and likable character, just like all the other characters, and Mephiles is an excellent villain, just like Black Doom from Shadow the Hedgehog
#4: It has such awesome music, and "His World" and "Dreams of an Absolution" are great theme songs and great video game songs, and I love the songs and the music
#5: It had so much potential
and #6: With #5 being stated, there are other infamous games out there that are actually worse than this game along with Shadow the Hedgehog the game, Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly, Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness, Earthworm Jim 3D, Final Fight: Streetwise, Mega Man X7, etc.
So yeah, those are reasons why I would still get the game on PS3.
I LOVE this game. Its a little glitchy but it still amazingly fun to me.
You are not the only one, and I have come to appreciate it a little more over years
Same i have always found this game fun
"If you have time to worry, then run."
That's some real top notch writing there, sega. What's next? Follow your dreams even if it's chilidogs?
If Sega/Sonic Team took their time on this game, it probably be a decent sonic game don't you agree?
yeah. I actually though this game was good (I was 6 so I probably not like it all that much now)
I personally believe if sega delayed the launch by one year, they would just cut a bunch of stuff away and leave only silver, making it a shadow-the-hedgehog ps3 version.
It's the only new idea that fit well.
Also check out the 2005 demo, it was more finished than the final game! oh, the irony...
+Blendedasian The demo is way better then the full game.
evilsonicfan It's Microsoft's fault
I was at an Microsoft event where they had a few demo units with this game and I could glitch through the entire levels. Some marketing guy saw what I was doing and asked me to stop because he didn't want the TV crew to see this XD
🤣🤣🤣
Lmao
The AC/DC / Rush comparison is quite true... And Rush is Awesome
Zones like Marble Zone were not the rule, they were the exception; the original Sonic games are mostly about keeping momentum to finish the levels quickly, and so whenever you attack an enemy in those games you keep going.

"You need a lot of things, and... this game provides none of them." Ahahaha I know that feel
@Neocasko Plus, who owns a Game Gear? *stares at his GG in his closet* XD
that's real funny derek. "The hills are alive with the sound of sonic"
The Sound of Music I suppose
The comparison to AC/DC and Rush is spot on.
Blaze was first introduced in Sonic Rush, a full year before Sonic '06.

Mephiles is also a very cool character who just made a bad first appearance.
I think Sega must remake this game to prove that this could be the best Sonic game ever.
No has blown since Sonic Adventure 1&2,but got back on track with Colors and Generations.
the sound of sonic gets fat kids running,oh you meant the hedgehog
Saying that Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 is the worst Sonic game ever is a bit of an understatement. It just destroyed what little was left of Sonic's credibility and made him the butt of gamers jokes.
I find it funny that they just now decide to review this and its 2012.

Goken Same with Enter the Dragonfly’s glitches.

A famous quote from the great clement
"everyone who likes sonic 06 are dumb and you should make fun of them"
I agree with that statement
Did you have to open on that?
You know... the original Sonic was stop and start, stop and start too. Ever tried to race through Marble Zone?
the ps3 version of the game only came out in 2007
Cool picture
Anyone notice that it's a Sonic 06 video without showing the kiss?
Want to know why Sonic '06 sucked? Because it was a reboot of the original Sonic 1.
You do know that Sonic has been "among humans" since 1991, right?
Is it bad that I actually wanna try this game out? I know it's bad but still, I'm curious. I guess I'm trying to look at it as Sonic Adventure 3. ....Which Sega should make in my opinion.
Yes, Robotnik is a human. And he's been around since 1991.
"All these new characters", Sonic '06 only introduced 3 new characters, those being Elise and Silver and Mephiles but in terms of only playable characters Silver is the only new one.
Because the Sonic Team worked with a mountain of pressure on their shoulders.
Yeah...because they were so many humans in the genesis games, right? Please! Sonic games for the most part have always been lighthearted. this is my second fav sonic game right under the daytime stages of sonc unleashed
I know it's opinion, and I guess I should clarify that the game being bad is certainly my opinion. The point is, you wanted a deeper analysis, and I recommended one. Whether or not you agree with it is up to you of course.
not many would even want to touch it,let alone repair it
Never in my life have I ever had a story in a game piss me off...except for this game
I have to agree, that Silvers Thelekenesis, is quite of
fun, but that's just too small of the game to count.
Press 1 repeatedly to see Sonic pretend to shoot Elise.
Watch this with the captions transcribed, they're almost perfect...
The sad thing is that this had the potential to be the best sonic game. Why does people complain about Sonic is slow in this game.. this game IS Sonic's current speed.
"Mario 64 is border line unplayable" Hey guys, I think I found one of Mysteriousman's alternate account
Sonic 06: The gaming equivalent of Star Wars Episode 1
I really like this games stages but the technical issues are so bad its unbelievable. Like the fact that they never where able to patch and fix the loads is one of the biggest issues.
The line at the end is so cheezy XD
THAT TORNADO IS CARYING A CAR!
If SEGA didn't make Sonic Team release the game during its beta stage, it could have been much better. Who knows, maybe if they kept programming it for another year or two, they could have made the best Sonic Game ever instead of the worst.
Mobius was never stated in Sonic 1, but it doesn't matter. That was then, and this is now, and Mobius is no longer enough.
Yeah, plot matters, dude. It may have escaped your notice, but kids don't actually like games that are aimed at them. They're smarter than that. I would love to see that too. SIlver is a great character.
How can SEGA rip off their very own original series?
I remember seeing this right before the switch to our current gen consoles and I was like
OMG dat graphics!!! :D
he HAS gotten better.
So did Sonic 2006, but that didn't stop it from being delisted.
Square didn't have to remake the game; they chose to. However, just because they do it doesn't mean that SEGA has to do it, too.

I can't believe this game is not butter.
Well, you needed 50 rings to access special stages in Sonic 2, and that game managed to move at a fast enough pace. But yeah, I get what you mean.
his games for the past 3-4 years have all been fun, why do people keep acting like they aren't?
THE GAMING EQUIVALENT TO RUSH that is the best anology i have EVER heard
Sorry to hear that
Why was this review not at least 30 minutes long?
I remember playing this game at my cousin's house, and I'm kinda glad it wasn't released on the Wii as well (although "Sonic & The Secret Rings" wasn't that great to play, either).
Prototype = alpha build.
Retail game = it's fucking finished.
This was a prototype that should've never been released. End.
everyone says that this game is terrible and full of glitches and long have I believed them but now I wanna see it for myself and play this game :O
Well, you had to collect 50 rings to get the Chaos Emeralds, so you needed to explore a little bit for that. I played this game as a kid and I don't remember any glitches...I like this game.
Welp, you're wrong there buddy. Despite both platforms being limited by each other's age.
You're wrong on both, but this game has a great soundrack.
heh okay, what's the plot like? Any better/worse compared to Unleashed?
Yeah, I never played a single sonic game in my life besides this one and even I could tell this was not the way a sonic game was meant to be.
Yeah no kidding... I thought the same thing too. The loading screens were inexcusable in both their frequency and length. It made me do a facepalm and Frisbee the disc out the window!
I thought Sonic and Elise's relationship was sweet, I didn't pay much attention to how long or how fast or even to how cliche it was.
The sad thing is that there are sonic fanboys who truly defend this game.
You weren't the only one, I was really excited about the game before it hit shelves. I thought the demo was great, but when I purchased the full game that's when I finally realized it was shit.
Seriously, how did he manage to not mention the glitches? That's the main reason why is game is so dreadful.
