  • A few days ago a box arrived in the post...
    And inside was one of the weirdest little gadgets I've ever seen.
    A handheld tuner... that, wait for it...
    Tunes your bass - automatically!
    As in, you don't have to move any of the tuning pegs yourself. It does it for you.
    Yep. I know. Weird, lol!
    I thought it'd be fun to film a quick video for you so you can see it in action... (and make sure to answer my question in the video as I'm going to pick someone randomly from the comments and send them this cool tuner)...
    As always, see you in the shed...
    Scott :)

    Would be perfect for the guitar orchestra for kids I run. 15 guitarists/bassists all day in a circle-I’d be able to run round and snipe tune them one by one! Or just let them use it and pass it on. Would cut down set up time for sure!! Also means I would hopefully never ever ever hear the following again:

    It's an amazing tool for me I'd love to have it, I'm a church bassist in Philly, so I stay busy, and specifically because I play multiple basses and I tune down two of my 5string basses. The fact that I can save specific instrument settings makes this a must for someone like me! Would love to put it to use Scott! -Manny #ScottaBassLessons #SBLAcademy

    Uses: Band members can all be tuned correctly AND to one another at the same time without a bunch of "give me a G."

    • @thatpaulschofield
      @thatpaulschofield 6 років тому

      Shawn Milochik I think he's looking for situations that make THIS particular tuner better for getting in tune with your bandmates.

    • @dominiccrimmings6925
      @dominiccrimmings6925 6 років тому +1

      And I also think if you're constantly having to ask your band members and them ask you to "give me a G" then you need to invest in a tuner, they need to invest in a tuner and learn the basics of tuning, it's really simple - Scott has some great basic stuff on that - a simple tuner you can be bought for about 10 bucks but once you can learn to tune your ear to your bottom E or whatever string, it's easy to tune the rest of the strings to it, it becomes second nature :-)

  • @YBA79

    As it is in the name, it could be useful for roadies who tune a lot of instrument/change strings very often (no plug needed).
    However, I'm curious about how it works: piezo sensor receiving vibrations in the tuning peg ?

    • @TheKranzi70
      @TheKranzi70 6 років тому +1

      Maybe.. and it also needs to know which string, so it has to measure the torque somehow

    • @mathiashls
      @mathiashls 6 років тому

      In the website they say something about "vibration sensor" so I believe your guess is possibly accurate.

    • @low58e
      @low58e 6 років тому +1

      Much closer to a piezo pick up or a "contact microphone".

    • @mathiashls
      @mathiashls 6 років тому

      Fester Blats indeed all devices are based in vibration because that's what sound is, but in this case I believe it is a piezo device or something like that (like mentioned above)

  • @stein0niets
    @stein0niets 6 років тому +1

    if you use #3 harmonics on 7th fret, the perfect-fifths, (and the high octaves on the 5th) and you start on the high string you will be out of tune when you reach the low string. Because the 5ths of 12-note-equal-temperament are off by -2 cts (compared to where the harmonic is) . Keep stacking this on a 5 string and you'll be +2+2+2+2 = +8 cts off (quite audible). So always check with some frets/positions for example open g string and 3rd fret on low E or only use the "octave" harmonics (in practice even these may be off because strings are old or inperfect). The octave is the only note which "in theory" is perfect, compared to its harmonic, within 12-tone equal temperament.

    Hey Scott! I could see this being used by people that work at venues setting up for high profile bands. For example, I’ve read that John Mayer takes 40 guitars on tour (keeps them on racks backstage), and if you’re the guy assigned to maintain them it might make your job easier to have this tool handy for tuning. Just a thought. Love your videos man! Thanks for doing what you do

      let me just pop in this memerie guys with a real question, do the "state" of strings really impact the sound? because I haven't changed mine ever, and I've had my bass for a few years already. like, the notes I play the most can now be determined by looking at them. How desperate of a situation is it, reastically?

    • @terryin20878
      @terryin20878 6 років тому +4

      Honestly, I don't change bass strings often. My acoustic guitars are another matter. The "bright" disappears over time, and the sound goes to pot. They are played less often, so I maybe get a year between changes. Those who play must more frequently, like pros, will change every couple weeks, if not days. It really comes down to the condition of the strings. If you are happy with the sound, you're probably ok to leave them as-is. Just my opinion..and opinions will surely vary on this.

  • @1mespud
    @1mespud 6 років тому +2

    Ease and convenience is everything. This would be perfect for those really thicker hard gauge guitar or bass strings when time to change up. Individual winding can become a real tedious chore. Especially if or when you lack physical strength and want to ease up on the wrist.

  • @FractilOpacity
    @FractilOpacity 6 років тому +5

    The uses I see for this are restringing a bass and when you only have 1 bass to gig with and your band plays multiple tunings. It also seems to be a lot better than headstock tuners, especially with the lower strings (that B string tune was quick!). Could also be for newer users that aren’t familiar with the different tunings of a bass. I’m very curious how it would handle a Fender Squire VI Jaguar bass!

    I think it would be quite useful for people like me who play bass for school i.e. jazz band, the rest 9f the band has a tendency to start with out me because it takes to long to tune by hand since I can't hear my bass all that well. Now normally this wouldn't happen but I also play a lot of other music with a wide variety of tunings, and I only own two basses, a four string, and a fretless five string, so I have to tune quite frequently, anyway it would be a huge help if I won this or for anyone else in a similar situation, cheers!!

      No, he's not wearing it on the "wrong" hand. Focal dystonia isn't specific to the left or right hand. He wears it to reduce the symptoms/effects that happen when the nerve endings are stimulated. I wear these gloves where/when needed. Sometimes on the left, sometimes on the right. Glad you thought it was funny, though.

    So I was just curious, I bought a 5 string bass. I would NEVER use a low B, but a high B to me seems like such a great idea... Just wondering how many people think this is completely wrong to do to a BASS(making it like a guitar) or is it a great idea? It is an idea I've had for a long time and I see a lot of guys that buy 5 string basses and NEVER use the low B... Thanks for the feedback... Take it easy

    • @danielwiebe2123
      @danielwiebe2123 6 років тому +4

      Scott is using a high C here. It’s called Tenor tuning.
      But it’s not unheard of to tune the high string a half step down to a B. Some guys even do this with a 6 string bass and have standard guitar tuning but an octave lower.

    • @NotVerySkilledBass
      @NotVerySkilledBass 6 років тому

      Some of them do use the whole scale (but plenty more don't). I personally love it as it gives me more variations in sound. Like if i want a fatter or brighter E, depending on what sounds better to me in the whole scheme. Concerning the remaining notes (B-D#) i admit to only using them for drop tunings or octaves. I love the sudden jump from low to high. And to play 3 octaves at once is a) handbreaking and b) awesome :).
      And i'm also playing with the idea to get another 5-string, put away B but give it a high C (just to keep the perfect five) instead of b though. I just don't want to put a bigger tension on that thin string than i have to.

    • @Grievous_Tone
      @Grievous_Tone 6 років тому +4

      Just think about what you miss when you play a 4 strings bass... If you're frustrated because you're missing higher notes, tune you're 5 sting bass in EADGC (Or EADGB if you don't mind with this f*ckin 2 tones gap I've never understood on guitars...) and if you're missing lower notes, tune you're your bass in BEADG.
      It's an art, just tune your bass as you prefere, the only rule is GROOVE !
      (sorry, bad english, I'm french.)

      Do whatever you want! I like the low B on my 5's though i've been considering a C string on one of them.For now, I've got a 6 for my high C needs. DO NOT worry about what other people think! What matters at the end of the day is if YOU like the way it sounds/plays. Try it and see what you think.

    Thank you Scott for this amazing review 🤘
    To answer some of your questions, Roadie Bass can be helpful in many situations:
    - It uses vibration sensing to tune accurately, even in noisy environments, so it's really handy for gigs.
    - it's fast, allowing you to tune in just seconds.
    - Not only can Roadie Bass tune bass guitars, it can also tune (almost) any string instrument equipped with guitar-like tuning pegs, guitars (all kinds), banjos, mandolins, ukuleles included! So if you're a multi-instrumentalist, you don't need to worry about spending a lot of your time tuning.
    - With Roadie Bass you can easily switch between preset alternate tunings, or even create and store your very own custom tunings which means you'll be able to tune a few cents (up to 50 + or -) flat or sharp in standard or any alternate tuning you like.
    - Do you prefer to play in A=432Hz? Choose any reference pitch you like between A=420hz to A=460hz
    - Roadie comes with a built-in wind/unwind feature for easy restringing

You can see on the meter if it goes more off or closer to in tune. Then the red figures turn green and you know you're done. If you can't do this maybe you can't play bass? or hold a drivers license?

    Something people haven’t seemed to think of as a use case: guitar tuner for the Blind. Myself and many other people that I know that have: either completely lost their vision or are losing their vision have bought this. I’ve used it as a tuner. I know how to tune my guitars properly and everything, but I just can’t see a normal tuner anymore. Plus, it’s not always quiet enough to use a sign wave reference tone for tuning. This has been a wonderful tool for the blind and visually impaired to have a greater convenience and independence.

    I follow you since a while cause I’m into bass a lot, but mainly, I play the guitar and for practicing purpose, that gadget would be amazingly useful! I play a lot of blues and when I practice some Clapton, SRV, Gary Moore, Alvin lee, and songs of my own, I always find myself tune in E, then Eb, back to E; drop D, DADGAD, and back to E... that thing might be just the right gadget, paired with the app, to make it fun to switch tuning. Faster? More efficient... maybe; but fun? Hell yeah! We guitar players are cool with gadgets! Hahaha!

    I think (apart from guitar shops and folks with lots of basses) the use case for this is someone who doesn't want to have to pull a cable in order to tune up. Possibly because they have some kind of complex and/or temperamental pedal board?
    Or, as in my case, because I use an AKG PT40/SR40 wireless setup (it's awesome BTW) and it would simply be less hassle than walking over to the amp and pulling the cable to stick into a tuner. But £129-worth of less hassle? I don't know … but I would love to have one for my gig bag!!!

    I'm sure you know by now. But I just looked it up. It works on vibration. So you can use it anywhere. Doesn't matter if there is a loud crowd, other instruments playing/tuning. Or even that annoying drummer banging on everything to drive you nuts while you're tuning. Lol its gonna work anywhere. Pretty cool. But for $100+ dollars. Not so sure. You can get a pretty kick ass rack tuner for a lot less. But cool little gadget anyway.🤷‍♂️

    Actually, it DOES LOOK COOLER for a musician to 'tune by the ear' on the stage, (what you did in the video), provided that they could do that within 10 seconds... or just using the tuning pedal, either way you look more professional WITHOUT a huge Roodie tuner on hand.
    However I'd love to use the auto tuner AT HOME, especially when I am tired, OR after I changed strings! Imagine the new sets of strings that constantly go out of tune, a Roodie tuner could save me lots of time and energy to get them back in tune before the strings settle. :)

    I foresee this tool being used primarily for a guitar/ bass tech. It seems you can switch between the modes fairly quickly so if you need to change a string quickly for your guitar or bass player you can tune up quickly. Such as maybe Brian May who loves his one Guitar you can quickly get it back to him if a string breaks.

    I LOVE mine and the one for guitar. (And their support is great!) For me, it works best in home recording. The video was edited, and seems a little slow to tune. But, when I'm in the middle of recording a track, or just before starting - this tunes FAST! By the time I pluck the string to tune (either harmonic style or straight string) I could already have half the strings tuned with this thing. I've used many tuners, and they can't seem to agree with each other LOL. They all seem to be off by a few cents. This one (once "trained") is spot on! (Yes, it's not particularly accurate on the lower strings for bass and guitar model at first. But it "learns" and after a few times using it, then it's perfect).
    It might be expensive if you already have an accurate tuner.
    And according to their videos - it's actually NOT great for a gig since it works with vibrations and if another person in the band happens to be playing a note - it could mistune. I even turn off the volume on my bass/guitar so it doesn't pick up my amp or monitors.
    Some people might think overkill, and others love it. I LOVE both of mine.

    I definitely need this gadget for our guitar hero who is switching among three guitars. If we could save 50 % of the time he usually spends tuning his 12-string acoustic at any gig, we could play at least two extra pieces. Especially at the spring/autumn outdoor gigs. And maybe, maybe he will not need to end up throwing the 12-string away halfway through the gig and using another guitar while changing the band's sound drastically.
    I would like to say I would use it for my bass too, but honestly: I tuned moth my basses during the x-mas holiday, so who would bother. Yep, I think it was X-mas 2015.

    Another use I can find is while recording at studio, if you don't want anything plugged in the signal chain in-between the instrument and the amp, so that would come in handy to easily tune between takes.

    Maybe it will useful for a roadie? It would be fast to keep the back-up guitars ready and also if
    Flee broke a string his roadie could maybe handle fast but I never heard of a bass player braking a string. Its a gimmick, but if I win I will use it. We could develop "The Player" which has 4 or 6 servo controlled picks or manikin
    fingers. You put it over the strings and log onto to Spotify, down load the track and have 'The Player" do the gig. We don;t have to learn to play then. Hmmm somehow I don't think Scot will go for this either.

    Seems good for roadies (as the name says), techs and luthiers. Guitar shops could probably use them too, since they have plenty of stock to keep in tune (especially if customers decide to mess with the tuning). Could also be useful for those who use slightly altered tunings per string, like James Taylor recommends for guitars. Each string's frequency could by programmed (I assume) that may be a few cents off from standard tuning.

    We use our Roadie Bass to tune the multitude of instruments we have. It's actually quite a bit faster at tuning than the pedal you're using, which I can speak of from personal experience. It's perfect for my young girls to tune their instruments (a ukulele and 3/4 guitar). Also, imagine the benefit of using it on a 12-string guitar!

  • @danh2802

    Hey Scott, I think the Tunygig (that's what I'm calling it, a Tunygig) is a great start for FNG's who need to learn to tune: Having learned to tune on a guitar, I had almost 1 year till I could tune my bass by ear, either way that is a lot of pegs to wind over my "career", and I started pretty young. Now the devil on my shoulder is telling me "but its not the same thing as using your hands because muscle memory, but I believe my starting on guitar and finishing on bass is a good way to argue against that, as guitar tuning pegs are weedy and small by comparison. In the end you don't learn to tune by doing it by hand, you learn to tune by doing it 1000+ times, and listening "with intent" , also the motorised approach is a great way to speed up any manual task.
    When you learn to tune it is with your hands too but mostly your ears, if you start focused on the hands you will get into a habit of tuning exactly the same pitch every time but it may always be a little sharp or flat (personally, i could tune age 16 but it was always (always) flattened a little, so forgive my bias here). I learned to tune by ear after realising this about 3 years back, when i started using a pitch "pipe" (video), instead of my old battery powered korg tuner, as it wasn't accurate enough anymore for what i was doing, seriously should have had a pitch pipe to begin with.
    Anyway Long post short, the tunygig is probably a good way to learn to tune by ear, as the end result of a tuning will be an instrument at correct pitch, you will be learning that tuning then by ear.
    But...neat gizmo, waste of space for me, and probably you, Scott if you cant hear yourself tuning up in the club, turn up the gain a little, its more fun than your new toy i'm sure. I love hearing instruments tuning up, so don't be shy! It's like a micro-tonal battle between sharp and flat. (That said, I still have 6 instruments totalling 29 strings, probably more of a waste ^^)
    Thanks for vids, give me a job! ^^ ta

    Re: A Use For The Rotary Tuner
    The rotary tuner could be handy when tuning in a big band setting where everyone is tuning/warming up. Mind, a clip-on tuner that reads the vibrations is what I use for this, and it works well, but sometimes takes three or four adjustments due to the surrounding cacophony. I think this one wouldn't quit until the job was accomplished in just one try per peg.

    The name Roadie makes me think it was made for just that kind of guy. that has 30 minutes to set up the bands guitars, (Three for the lead guitarist, two for the rhythm, two bass' and Five for the lead singer that only plays for 1/4 of each song). Oh and then recheck everyone's tuning at the 20 minute intermission...

    As the name says it (nomen est omen..) it's for ROADIES. ;)
    They might not be knowing how to tune a) a guitar or b) any given specific guitar. S.o. might have other ways of tuning their lowest - or change all of them strings together.
    That's what the phone app is for (it says so in the clip you featured).
    Or the ambient noise might simply be too high to hear the tuning, Those clip-on tuners are anything but "sure" about the tuning, my two actually stay on one spt then move away, then move somewhere else (it's seems that this is "physiological" to strings).
    OR the artist might not even want anybody else to touch the instrument. As a matter of fact, you could tune the guitar even while leaving them on their stand.
    AND there might be string instruments that have many moe strings that and tuning them 30 strings might be a nightmare.
    That little thing does all that, it's quite something, init? :))
    Cheers Scott and thx!
