I remember watching this in 2007, year 6 at school, writing about it and understanding some of it. Again, watching it on one of the better days at home, a Sunday evening in 2009-10, and again now aged 21, living alone and a fair bit wiser, and understanding it a lot more. Timeless movie, thank god there are Mr Toms in the world!

I'm a tough s.o.b. who spent 10 years in the Infantry - in combat and in peacetime - and many years after managing a large business with 1400+ employees. Nothing can get through my shell. I have had many losses over the past few years - family, friends, loved ones - and have witnessed the losses suffered by so many others because of this frigging virus. I chose this flick by random selection just to fill the time tonight and the last thing I needed, or so I thought, was to find tears on my cheeks. I'm a tough guy. Or maybe not so much. Maybe I needed those tears. So glad I found this tonight. I needed it. Thank you.
Paul Keith What a great comment. You are a true hero - a real man. Real men do not think their manhood dwells only in being tough, but in being honest enough to admit to a softer, human side. We need to be in touch with the whole gamut of our emotions in order to be mature - both men and women. Thank you for being so honest, and thank you for your service to your country.
Maybe you need to talk your cares and worries out Paul . The infantry always have it the hardest . up front in the firing line , My son was in the Paras 2 then S.A.S and many soldiers come out with an invisable shell and cannot speak about it . The rest of us need to realise and appreciate what it means to be a soldier in peacetime and combat .there is much going on in peacetime that should not be going on , but I wont mention it on this platform ,It has changed somewhat but by God it needs to change a lot more .
I'm a 58 yr old navy veteran. I now live in Mombasa. I adopted an eight year old boy who never knew his father. I am the only father he knows. He turned 12 yesterday. I am so proud of him. He fills my heart with happiness. I know I probably won't see his children in years to come. There is wrong in giving a child a warm and loving home

I never get bored watching this film and despite how many times i watch it, I always end up bawling my eyes out. "I can ride Dad I can really ride" Niagara falls.
One truly superb piece of acting is when Mr Tom asks William to hand over his deceased half-sister to the emergency services. Mr Tom is taking in the horror of what he’s seeing but his eyes betray nothing to William. It’s hard to cry on cue, even harder to want to cry but having to hold the tears back. The irreplaceable John Thaw, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls and variations thereupon.
A story that shows humanity has not died and how it puts a different perspective on life. We live in a sad and troubled world but this story made me feel very humble and takes me back to my childhood. A very moving slice of of past times. Thank you.

John Thaw always plays such an old grump! However, in this film he finally smiles and shows the depths to his character! This is a lovely, unpretentious movie, reminding us all the value of love and caring for one another. ❤️😊 Why dwell on horrors in our lives when it feels so wonderful to love and smile and to shout for joy!?
Reading a few of the comments, it’s nice to see this book/film still being introduced to school kids just like my classmates and I were in the mid-2000s. Despite the film being 20 years old now, because it’s set during WW2 it remains timeless. John Thaw and Nick Robinson are superb.

Thanks to JP Morgan and the Rothschilds, had they not stolen Tesla's invention for free electric he could of built the death Ray gun and all wars from 1900s onwards would never of happened, why start a war if you haven't got a weapon that will help you win, war as to happen in the minds of the elite to start the new world order, fewer people, that are dumb are easier to control than the billions that roam earth like a virus.
A heart touching movie during the war....how love can enter a stranger's heart and be the closest person in the world. How this love can remove the scars of the past and transform.....a soul so beautifully. ❤🎉 Amen
Its been years and years since I watched something like this movie..goshh, maybe since my childhood. Just absolutely lovely!..I'm very thankful for posting it.
I was born October 29th 1936 evecuated in June 1940 to the village of Horningsham,Wiltshire,U K I was billeted with a couple in their 60's There were no other children in the village and soon after my arrival I was sent to school located in another village two miles away (no bus or car ) I was placed in a class of older children but due to my age could neither read or write. My brother, born Aug 4th 1940, was killed in Londonon August 3rd 1944 I was not reunited with my parents until a few days later. My father died on December 12th 1947 This movie is extremely evocative for me. I often wonder ,and think about ,what effect this experience had on us children. At the trime and in the following years. John May (now living in Vancouver,Canada)
This movie has become my “comfort food.” It has all the elements of what life is all about, cruelty, unselfishness, commitment, pain, healing, death and life and most of all LOVE.
Apparently I needed to cry today, both tears of sadness and joy. I hadn't seen this movie, or heard of it. It was recommended, and I am glad to have watched. And now, I highly recommend it.
This lovely film gives me a lump in my throat and tears to my eyes, as i go back to my childhood days and pine for them, with one exception that is! It was hard, but everyone was friendly and sharing, a real community, and NOW! look what we have, its so sad...
I’ve watched this film about 6 times. It’s wonderfully moving. John Thaw at his very best. In fact the whole cast were fantastic in this beautiful film ❤❤❤❤❤😢
I don't cry very often at my old age, but I liked this movie. Well done, it's a great story, with a worthwhile theme: love *does* work. I identified strongly with William -- so much abuse, neglect, and terror -- how *_does_* one survive such a childhood and remain able to love? For him to have survived all his losses is truly inspirational, even if it is just a work of fiction. More movies like this should be made -- it's so much more inspiring than the crap Hollywood produces these days.
The best fiction has it's roots in truth. Someone CLEARLY lived through this or knew someone who did. Wouldn't it be ironic if it were the chap from the Home Office in the black suit. Yeah, I know. A woman wrote the story. It could have been his daughter. I know I would have told my children about a young child like William Beech. And the man who had compassion for him. An absolutely inspiring story. I couldn't make it through without crying. The look on the boy's face when Tom told him never to raise a stick to his dog. It was just happenstance that Tom had a red hot poker in his hand. At that point, no one knew anything about the abuse. And LOVED what Tom did with "The Belt". Tom became an unwilling parent, but a very good one. The story is kind of a cross between "Anne of Green Gables" and "Heidi".
'Crap' is just how I think of 'Follywood' productions of late. I have not been excited about any current productions out of the main or 'Lame-Stream' in years. 8a41jt they can call us ol'folk, out of touch but I'm not interested in the mass market appeal of entertainment come violence and mayhem generated by the money and minds of today.
This movie was so touching. The best family movie I have seen. Thank God for such a beautiful and happy ending for a young boy who went through so much.
I read this book in High School and then chose it for a literature exploration in first-year University. I have read it to countless students over the years and have enjoyed every read.
This story is incredible, unforgettable, incomparable beautiful story. Everything in the story, the location, the English life amazed me🤗🌹It will always remain in my heart 💖💥✨👍 A story that opened to the church bell ringing means God is always with us in sadness or happiness. The Christian cemetery of beloved departed dear symbolised nothing belong to us, God Gives and Take🤲 Love is everywhere, God take away but He return it to us in unexpected ways. A sad and lonely Grandpa are given new happiness with an evacuee abandoned boy from London during the war and together, they built up a new life🌹
God didn’t do it. He allowed it, but He didn’t do it. He created a perfect world, but now it’s cursed by mankind’s sin. In His sovereignty He chose to give mankind free will. He lets people have their way sometimes, for reasons we may not understand; but He will bring justice and make all things right one day. Revelation 20:12, 21:4; John 3:16; Romans 10:13.
Especially the very good SETTING of countryside landscapes and villages with their exemplary and TYPICAL buildings of the country with all their details and daily activities ... frankly; It is VERY but VERY good this British production. I saw a very similar one many years ago when I was (I) about 09 years old titled "without family" here in Peru and I never found this movie again. Today I am 70 years old and I see that these movie gems are WONDERFUL !!!!
Yes! I also enjoyed the contrast to the images of grey old London and the poverty physical and emotional the average person lived with in those times. Be Well.
I can’t watch this without eating because it makes me realise how grateful I am about not being in the war. Me and 1940 are still very close 10 years on since we met in 2012
This has to be one of the best TV films ver made. I had the pleasure of meeting John Thaw in the village PO where he lived. I put my hand out and thanked him for all the great work he had done over the years and told him Goodnight Mr Tom had to be his best Watched the film umpteen times to the point I cry when the title goes up.
I fell in love with the book when a teacher noticed I was a precocious reader at age 7. I saw so much of my own life in it, even if I didn’t realise it back then, it was such a comfort and I didn’t feel so alone. It’s always scary how much his abusive mother is like my own, minus the physical abuse. The episodes of bipolar/borderline personality disorder…. One moment his mother is psychotic and abusive, the next she’s kind and loving. I’m so glad mental health is recognised more these days.
What a beautiful story, I cried throughout watching and today is Remembrance Day in Canada. My mum was a British war bride who met my father in Manchester during the war. She lost her own father to WWI
Estheir from lndia (78+) l love the way Tom changed William's life by giving him a taste of heaven here on earth.Truly, a touching movie ! We need more of them. Father God, thank You and bless You for helping us to bring Your Kingdom come on earth !!!
One heck of a movie. I admit I kept this movie on my "watch later" list for a long time, and am glad I decided to view it this evening. Child abuse is a sore point with me, so I stuck through this movie, hoping William and Mr. Tom would stay together. I observed the winces and careful silence that the young actor accurately portrayed - that of any abused child. I loved how Mr. Tom stomped the offending kid-beating belt back into the ground while gardening.
I think this is my favourite performance by John Thaw. A Very good story and a great little film that didn’t seem to put one foot wrong from beginning to end.
It’s honestly amazing how well this movie was set. This was one of the most emotional movies I have ever watched. And I will watch it a million times if I have to again. Good people make good deeds make good children. As some people might say, well for me at night. Good night Mr. Tom. 😁
I saw this movie years ago It is a great movie about a old Man who tacks in some kids From the war and chances His life from a group to the nicest Man in the village I give this movie A 100 plus this movie well bring tears of happiness

the 2 things l hate the most child abuse and war. thank the heavens for all the MrTom's in the world
agreed
Thanks to JP Morgan and the Rothschilds, had they not stolen Tesla's invention for free electric he could of built the death Ray gun and all wars from 1900s onwards would never of happened, why start a war if you haven't got a weapon that will help you win, war as to happen in the minds of the elite to start the new world order, fewer people, that are dumb are easier to control than the billions that roam earth like a virus.
A heart touching movie during the war....how love can enter a stranger's heart and be the closest person in the world. How this love can remove the scars of the past and transform.....a soul so beautifully. ❤🎉 Amen
I am in tears....tears of absolute joy ..A masterpiece indeed
John Thaw is so wonderful, and this is one of his later projects, if you haven’t seen it please find the time. Thank you for the upload.
He once said this was his favourite role X.
I want to live in that gorgeous small village, with Tom as my neighbor.

Its been years and years since I watched something like this movie..goshh, maybe since my childhood. Just absolutely lovely!..I'm very thankful for posting it.
Spharion what a beautiful comment ☺
Brilliant! Thank you
It's one of the best TV movies ever. ❤
I was born October 29th 1936 evecuated in June 1940 to the village of Horningsham,Wiltshire,U K
I was billeted with a couple in their 60's There were no other children in the village and soon after my arrival I was sent to school located in another village two miles away (no bus or car )
I was placed in a class of older children but due to my age could neither read or write.
My brother, born Aug 4th 1940, was killed in Londonon August 3rd 1944 I was not reunited with
my parents until a few days later. My father died on December 12th 1947
This movie is extremely evocative for me. I often wonder ,and think about ,what effect this
experience had on us children. At the trime and in the following years.

Love this film so much. R.I.P John Thaw. 🕊 🕊 🕊 🕊
In those days there was no social services to remove Will from his abusive mother
8a41jt, What, no car chases, swearing or shootings, thank God!
@@KimSenior Exactly! Nice to watch a film that pulls at your heartstrings rather than violence that take over these day's.
I love this film. I come back to watch it every now and then. The ending still makes me cry ❤️
This movie was so touching. The best family movie I have seen. Thank God for such a beautiful and happy ending for a young boy who went through so much.
the ending made me cry !!!!!!😭
I read this book in High School and then chose it for a literature exploration in first-year University. I have read it to countless students over the years and have enjoyed every read.
Have watched numerous times & still brings a tear or so .❤
I've watched this movie 3 times and I still cry at the part where he calls Tom dad
This story is incredible, unforgettable, incomparable beautiful story. Everything in the story, the location, the English life amazed me🤗🌹It will always remain in my heart 💖💥✨👍
A story that opened to the church bell ringing means God is always with us in sadness or happiness. The Christian cemetery of beloved departed dear symbolised nothing belong to us, God Gives and Take🤲
Love is everywhere, God take away but He return it to us in unexpected ways. A sad and lonely Grandpa are given new happiness with an evacuee abandoned boy from London during the war and together, they built up a new life🌹
Soooo lovely said, take care my friend

Be Well.
Watching again in 2022. It never gets old. Mister Tom ❤️ John Thaw we miss you so ❤️
Same
I can’t watch this without eating because it makes me realise how grateful I am about not being in the war. Me and 1940 are still very close 10 years on since we met in 2012
Two sad and lonely hearts find love and happiness. 🙂 Good emotional WW2 period movie.
This has to be one of the best TV films ver made.
I had the pleasure of meeting John Thaw in the village PO where he lived. I put my hand out and thanked him for all the great work he had done over the years and told him Goodnight Mr Tom had to be his best
Watched the film umpteen times to the point I cry when the title goes up.
"-I can ride Dad, I can really ride"

I fell in love with the book when a teacher noticed I was a precocious reader at age 7. I saw so much of my own life in it, even if I didn’t realise it back then, it was such a comfort and I didn’t feel so alone. It’s always scary how much his abusive mother is like my own, minus the physical abuse. The episodes of bipolar/borderline personality disorder…. One moment his mother is psychotic and abusive, the next she’s kind and loving. I’m so glad mental health is recognised more these days.
What a beautiful film ..And bless John. He was of our best ..Love to Sheila x
Apart from war, its all my childhood portrayed....my grandpa and me... I'm so thankful for you Mr Johnson 🙃
What a beautiful story, I cried throughout watching and today is Remembrance Day in Canada. My mum was a British war bride who met my father in Manchester during the war. She lost her own father to WWI
Estheir from lndia (78+)
l love the way Tom changed William's life by giving him a taste of heaven here on earth.Truly, a touching movie ! We need more of them. Father God, thank You and bless You for helping us to bring Your Kingdom come on earth !!!
❤ ❤ ❤
Oh my word, what a beautiful heartwarming film!
Beautiful old film without violence.
Oops! I hadn't met the bipolar mom😢
I think this is my favourite performance by John Thaw. A Very good story and a great little film that didn’t seem to put one foot wrong from beginning to end.
What a beautiful film from the early years. Simpler day,s maybe, but happier.
If we could mix the medical advancements with the simpler days - I'd be only too happy.
It’s honestly amazing how well this movie was set. This was one of the most emotional movies I have ever watched. And I will watch it a million times if I have to again. Good people make good deeds make good children. As some people might say, well for me at night. Good night Mr. Tom. 😁
A great story so wonderfully told. Thank you.
Beautiful Movie, I love John Thaw! Thanks for posting... ❤

We studied this film when I was back in primary school (roughly at the age of 9 or 10) and for some reason I keep coming back to watch this every year. In 17 now and it never get old on how I take everything for granted without realising.
Brilliant, beautiful and worth every minute.
